Kirby: First Killer App for DS?

Yea I'm in the 7th world myself and I'll agree it's pretty challenging. Though I suck with touching things so I'm finding many DS games to be quite difficult (FtM, Pac-Pix,Kirby).

I just beat it... I was pretty good at the boss part after last night's practice run :)
The story in the ending sequence explains a lot about why it used to be called "Mahou no Efude" and why the US version is called "Canvas Curse". The US title is actually pretty decent, I think, but it should be something like Kirby & The Cursed Canvas, rather than just Kirby Canvas Curse.

Nice unlockable at the end, though whether I can be bothered to play through the entire game again (I wonder how many similar unlockables there are) is another matter. Might have a stab at getting some more medals though, to see what I can unlock from the medal machine.

Can not wait for the speed runs for this game. Seeing as I have turned into a speed run fiend.

There's a mode where all you do is speed run through the levels. Teh fun.

Just beat it myself. Awesome awesome last boss which kinda makes you wonder why the other boss fights couldn't have been cool pattern based bosses also. My total time including messing around with some time trials and ink trails was 4:30 but the game is not short for a platformer, it's just right I think.

Last world was hard, auto-scrolling bits felt like Gradius :P I still don't like touching things though ;_; I took a lot of damage on the final boss because Kirby wasn't going the direction I wanted him. Total medals were 101 with 36% clear.

Overall the game was excellent. Nice difficulty curve, great level design, lots of replay value, and gorgeous graphics (the physics engine is excellent almost feels 3d).

I'd disagree about the post-game reward as I think it's kinda ho-hum and I was bored of it after a level, but the medals give enough reason to keep playing the game.

Best game on DS hands down, probably will stay that way until we get another real platformer.

With all the cash saved from going single screen, Nintendo probably could've upspecced the chipset and added dual analogs too.

WHERE do you people get these ideas? It doesn't work that way. If anything, the cost would be higher since the entire screen would have to have a touch panel (or you wouldn't have an indication of where the touch panel ended) and because the LCD wafers would be larger cuts, the defect rate would probably be higher.

Oy.

Did he say bigger screen?

I'd have enjoyed the current DS with one screen and an analog nub. Higher specs would be nice but DS is OK.

Most of the games using the touchscreen directly interface with that screen, so the 2nd screen isn't that important. The only times your hand obscures the touch screen is when you are using it as a retarded analog pad, which is easily solved by having an analog pad

Bigger? I'm talking about the same screen area. Halfing the available screen area would have been sucky, and using the touch screen to mimic analog input or even a mouse for a fps would be sucky. Obscuring the screen with your hand is problem with certain games, so you need the whole screen area available for those ones.

Most games only use one screen for active gameplay anyway (hello map!). Touch interface would likely be dropped for fps, racers and other 3D games in favor of the dual analogs. Really, there wouldn't be any obscuring of the touch screen, games like Pac-Pix or Kirby would be played the same while games like Mario 64 or Ridge Racer would just use analog.

Dropping a screen would also have allowed Nintendo to move below that $99 barrier and still churn a profit (most of the DS $114 production cost comes from the dual screens). Change the platform name to Game Boy 64 or Game Boy Touch! or something, upspec the chipset a little (more hardwired effects, faster ARM series... maybe even spring for MBX) and they've got a solid little machine to ride out the next 3 years on.

Considering that I think emulating a mouse interface for FPS is one of the most promising areas for the nds, I can't agree with this at all. Not that I think it's that promising overall, I'm still not interested in buying it, but this would severely decrease the attraction for me.

If they had put in a better chipset, they could have charged more for it.

I agree with the fps case, but I do think dual analog nubs/pads would better serve a wider variety of genres over analog "emulation" with the touch screen. DS would be a better machine overall for it.

Chipsets are negligible costs in these things (even the PSP chipset is super cheap). The big costs in handhelds come from the screen and to a lesser extent RAM. Over half of DS $114 production costs comes from the screens, shaving one of them would free up a ton of potential pricing space for things like upping the chipset and adding control interfaces like analogs or maybe even tilt sensors like Nintendo wanted to originally. It'd be a worthwhile tradeoff imo.

It seems there's a couple more you can obtain with medals, which are probably better. It's very hard playing the game like this though ;)

How did you get so many medals on one run? Did you play trials a lot at the same time? And did you ever find the big blue switch? I don't know if it's necessary to get all the medals, though. Hmm, and how about the two medals on "world 8", where the hell is the second one??? :) Don't make me go to GameFAQs :P

Sadly, I had to give Kirby DS back to my coworker (mine will arrive with Electroplankton next week) so I haven't been playing this game at all.

To satiate my Kirby urges, I've picked up two GBA games that I overlooked the last couple years: Nightmare in Dreamland and Amazing Mirror.

I haven't tried Amazing Mirror yet, but I just started playing Nightmare last night (on world 3 now) and it's pretty fucking awesome. I know it's a remake of the first Kirby on NES (a game I never played -- my first Kirby was SNES) but this is a loving rendition complete with incredible sprite work and lots of subtle touches. Too bad it doesn't have the power mixing from the SNES and N64 versions of Kirby, but I'm digging it so far.

Also picked up Super Army War... as a fan of Rescue Raider/Armor Alley, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. :P

My PSP has been relegated to manga duty again. It's all about the DS (meteos, and GBA) right now for some reason.

I just remembered playing Kirby 3 in your apartment way back when...natsukashii!

I miss the mixing aspect as well; that was the best thing they ever did to Kirby (Air Ride being the worst ;p). I wish they'd bring it back!

hmmm...

Yeah, food for thought, eh? All ye trolls, dinner is served!

Once you've finished the game, try booting with Kirby's Magic Mirror in the GBA slot (not sure if it works with the US version, but I used my JP version). You'll get a nice present :D

I only need about 3 more medals from the main worlds now. I found the blue switch, but I still have no idea where the 2nd medal is in the 8th world. HELP!

I've been playing through the import of Kirby DS and it really is quite fun. It's like a mix of...Old Kirby, old school Sonic, and innovative features of the DS. It's really great. Hal did some good level design and game design overall, topped off by bright graphics, and masterful music, a staple from Hal.
