Kotaku: NBA 2K18 is Riddled with Microtransactions

taking away hairstyles when you create your player and charging 1,000 for haircuts, something they know is a huge deal for myplayer fans, is one of the more disgusting cash grabs I've seen in the past couple years.

I see a lot of twitch streamers have characters rated in the high 80's...so I assume they dumped some serious coin to rank up their character so fast. Wow.

The game plays great but the VC stuff is really out of hand. If you don't spend real money, the game is such a time sink that it becomes very frustrating.

LMAO no he's not?

Taking account into inflation, games are cheaper than they've ever been in history, while costing more to make than ever.

There are several factors that in theory should negate that though, such as Gaming being far more popular than it was decades ago when it was more of a kid/niche industry, meaning far more people are buying consoles/games; and Digital delivery reducing disc production/shipment costs.

So while games cost more to make and prices haven't risen as much as inflation, companies sell far more copies and a decent chunk of that from digital delivery.

NBA Live should come out at $40. Lots more people would give it a try, especially with this.

GameStop is giving out $20 off coupons for live 18. I bought 2k the other day, but haven't opened it. I was thinking about just getting live and playing that. I hear the story mode is decent too.

I hate these Microtransactions just build up your guy. That's like the reason people buy the game.

I still like 2k but I hope they don't destroy the series with this shit now.

These types of things are the ones that turned me away this year. 2k16 you could use most of the dribble and dunk styles without any vc. In 2k17 you had to buy them. Now, you only have 4 hairstyles available at the start and they everything after that costs VC. Saw this in the prelude and just noped right on out.

Can you transfer your character from previous games? otherwise is really stupid to spend a lot of money to build your character only to lose all the progress the next year

I am done supporting them too. No more 2k, no more.

I hope EA gets their shit together and start making decent NBA game.

NBA 2K are great games but my God are they punishing you for playing it.

The online MyCareer mode is such bullshit to me.

Even when you reach a point where you have enough VC point you still can't fully upgrade your character without going to their boring ass training session in 2K17.

Yep I refuse to give them any more money that's why I bought Live this year.

Nice to finally have a choice after ten years

He's absolutely right, the cost of a game compared to inflation is extremely cheap. I would prefer other ways to implement earning extra cash rather than straight up highway robery microtransactions but this is the age we live in.

I can kinda maybe accept that for some games but certainly not annualized sports games. I love and play NBA2K every year, but there's no denying that the way they implement microtransactions is getting more and more obnoxious with each year.

It sure is fun to laugh at EA's continually dropping the ball with their NBA Live series, but I honestly hope they can one day make some thing good enough to match 2K, cause the shit I hear about that series has gotten pretty ridiculous.

I saw that there's a $200 CAD version of the game (at least on Switch), I did a hard double take on that shit. $200 for a yearly game? Fuck that.

Passed on the game this year and this VC shit is the reason why...

When it comes to MTs and how the game is being designed around them... 2k18 is the worst $60 game I've seen to date. It's gross what they've done with the MyPlayer mode and I'm glad it's getting some attention. Sports games seemingly get an easier pass a lot of the time...

I've been on the 2K is the microtransaction scum of the earth train since 2013. (proof: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=93298312&postcount=96 ) and they're worse now than they were then.

The mycareer portion is essentially unplayable for free if you're not willing to invest 200+ hours.
Your player always starts as the worst basketball player in the league, and it will take 150+ hours of gameplay( conservative estimate) to make him not terrible at playing basketball. You haven't bought any clothes, fancy moves, dunks, or this years exclusive feature hairstyles either.

They make it even more disgusting by how tied to a save file all of your earnings are. VC is non refundable, respecs are not possible despite continuous patching of player stats, certain purchases are not shared across save files, vc doesn't carry over in yearly titles etc...

Honestly, NBA2K is legitimately disgusting to the point where I think it's indefensible, predatory, abusive and just down right greedy beyond belief.

And...pre-order cancelled. I was curious to play a sports game for the first time in a decade but i'm not touching this til' it hits the used game bin, if ever.

welcome to the industry you chosen by continuing buying games with microtransactions in it,now enjoy, and know that you doomed us all.

This is what happens when dev costs are high and game prices are too cheap
Then downsize or increase game prices upfront instead of nickel and diming the shit out of your audience.

AAA games being expensive to make isn't the consumer's problem. This isn't kickstarter.

glad these assholes are getting exposed. and fuck you to the Take2 employees in this thread. there is no defense to the anti-consumer practices that 2K18 is riddled with.

There ain't no other ways. It's either take money up front or highway robbery. Remember, you are buying absolutely, positively jack shit when you buy VC. You are paying extra for stuff you already (supposedly) own.

I don't give two fucks about the lining of take twos pockets as they have earned enough money last year to support this game for the next 10 years. They only touch the game up in increments, add slight additions and change the rosters.. that's why it comes out on time, every time every year.

If we're gonna keep buying these games, myself included, let's at least understand that we are being duped..

If not it'll never change. I mean that's the reason of the thread right?

Yet Destiny 2 and CoD will keep breaking records.

People got what they deserved. Enjoy your 60€ + microtransactions forever.

Oh and 'but the prices are too low and the costs higher!!'

Yet there are tons of AAA developers that don't force single player microtransactions on you, if any.

I wonder how is From Software keeping themselves afloat with all these 0 microtransactions, respectful to the player, non-cashgrab games.

I guess making completely new mechanics environments enemies and well designed areas and bosses is less expensive than rehashing the same sport game from 3 years ago.

Keep paying for cancer like Destiny 2 people. That's the way to counter this, supporting games that ask you 100€ for the 'complete' edition on top of scummy, grind-enforcing microtransactions.

I wonder how LoL managed to become the biggest game in the world without charging a bullshit 60€ upfront too. Won't they think of the uprising development costs?

As repetitive as Jim Sterling can be, he's been right about companies abusing microtransactions. It's getting worse and worse all the time.

I grew up in the 90's before the age of DLC and I would never be willing to pay more than the initial price of the game. I got addicted to Rocket League and still wouldn't even pay the $2 for the Delorean skin. I just hate the idea of games having an ongoing cost. Gaming is already an expensive enough hobby as it is.

I'm willing to make an exception with microtransactions in F2P games because you know what you're getting into from the start but seeing this sort of shit in full priced retail games just makes my blood boil.

2K games is too busy making door signs to address the issues players are having with deleted characters and VC. Twitter is roasting the hell out of them.

https://twitter.com/nba2k/status/910262258587987968

Guess what though they don't give a shit

Cross post from the OT since we discuss VC a lot already there

Well VC is never going anyway. This is why this shit is so supported on the OS forums and will NEVER EVER go away.

Check this shit out

You really think 73% achieved that 90 through the myleague method? Nope

This means 70% of ALL NBA 2k players buy the high ass edition OR buy a shit ton of VC.

This game is fucked, it's only going to get worse.....way worse

Reviews needed to absolutely trash this aspect of the game and low score it's ass for this

Yeah, they get worse. Which is impressive, I thought they were pretty scummy when I first played a NBA game back with 2k14 but at least my character grew pretty quickly just by playing career mode. Comparatively it feels glacial now.

I remember seeing similar complaints for last year's game. I only played MyGM, though, so VC was only used to upgrade my GM and even that seemed kind of trivial when my main focus was winning the games. I guess if I simmed the games and played through multiple seasons maybe my GM would be exposed as being "underleveled" or something, but I never tried that. Also, I got so much VC by playing MyGM games that I was able to buy my franchise from its owner (I think it was 50k VC) less than halfway through the season. I guess Take Two only really puts the screws to you if you play the online blacktop or whatever playground mode or MyCareer.

Was into Pro Am hard last year. I've spent the majority of my time just playing PlayNow because of this, stuff. Glad they're getting exposed.

It's only just now that the competition has put out a competent product. And, although this VC stuff is trash, the actual gameplay of 2K18 is really good, and much improved over 2K17.

This bears repeating. The microtransaction bullshittery is awful, but it's important to note that you can still have a great time with the game without ever buying a single bit of VC because the gameplay is rock solid. I think that's why the game still gets positive reviews, because if the reviewer is doing Play Now games or going through a season solo or with friends then the VC nonsense never really shows itself. Then they probably just dip their toe into the online and solo career modes to test stability and only play a handful of games, before they hit the VC wall.

My career and myteam have always been awful plus traps for vcwhales.

As long as they keep play now and my league away from it it's hard for me to care about them further ruining the worst of their own modes. (Except for any dumb kids who buy vc i feel bad for them).

Do most people play mycareer, and is this where all the microtransactions are?

I play NBA 2k15 casually (have NBA 2k16 but haven't even started on that yet), and just play franchise mode (with fantasy draft) and that doesn't seem to have any microtransactions?
