Kotaku: The Wii U Won't Be Getting Unreal Engine 4

Eh it is a shame, but I suppose we'll have to see who has the last laugh. Nintendo puts out "weak" hardware, survives the crash, Epic puts out a engine that "only doubles developer costs!!" not quadruples it!" and developers rejoice!

Meanwhile... The bank prepares all those foreclosure notices as one by one these publishers/developers begin going out of business, following THQ all the way down the drain. It's pretty much writing on the wall at this point. It's like watching a bunch of people cruising along on the Titanic laughing at Nintendo as they abandoned ship.

Yes, just like how blockbusters crashed the movie industry.

I feel bad for Nintendo. It doesn't really matter what they do now, they will have to sell the Wii U completely on their own strenght. I'm not sure how they want to avoid having giant holes in their release schedules during all of Wii U's life.

Doesn't really affect Nintendo fans anyway. They live in their bubble of the dozen or so Nintendo games released for the system. Even if UE4 worked on the Wii U, the fans wouldn't buy UE4 games.

Eh, logic and prospects of great Nintendo titles + indies make me think Wii U will still be worthy at the end of the generation, but inside my heart a very little part sees things like these and think "Nintendo, scratch it and release the REAL console". I know it's illogical and stupid, but a reaction like this is sad and awesome at the same time. At least, they're doing AMAZING things for indies, and that's pretty great for the future Wii U environment.

It's not like Nintendo is the only one that's moving for having indies on the platform, they will have an hard time there too.

a lot of selective reading in here.
Epic isn't going to port the engine..he doesn't say it's not possible..in fact he says if someone else wants to do it, they can.

If a game is made in UE4, can it be ported down to UE3? or is it stuck on the engine it's made on forever?

This

I'd imagine UE4 is built based on the power of next-gen consoles. If so, I'm not sure why there'd be any surprise that it wouldn't work on a last-gen console (by "last-gen," I mean system power).

Seriously. I don't understand all the mocking...did anyone really expect UE4 on Wii U anyway?

I don't think the West have contempt for Nintendo, they just failed to build a system that's a viable fourth arm to the next two and PC, so it's not going to get support from them. People see this as people cheering fuck Nintendo, it could just as easily be people cheering UE4 is high level.

Oh, I agree with you entirely. I was just clarifying what the intent of the post you'd quoted might have been.

Personally, I think Nintendo gets what is coming to them. If they had made a viable system for western sensibilities, they would be getting support from the west. They failed to do that, so they won't.

Stopped reading after the first sentence because Kotaku, but pushed forward for the rest of it.

Goddamn. Fuck this noise. I want to love the Wii U. I really do. I bought it on launch day. And so far my only excuse for owning only Nintendo Land, NSMBU and ZombiU so far is because of school studies. Beyond that I have my sights on MH3, NFS and Lego City Undercover.

But then what?

All my rage to tell these devs to fornicate themselves on a horizontal plane.

This is what you get for buying a console at launch when it literally had nothing of note forecast for past the first 6 months.

Dont generalize every Nintendo fan, but the ones who cheer on news like this or say it doesn't matter is where the problem lies

Honestly, Nintendo should just kill off the WiiU at this point.

What a colossal fuckup

Too late now.

I don't know what you mean by "justifying ports."

If Wii U was getting Hotline Miami I'd buy it and play it.
Or you could play it on PC. I want new third party games, so I have a PC and intend on getting a PS4. I sold my Vita for not having anything worth a damn on the horizon and after the first wave of first party software for my Wii U I very well may do the same.

Anyone really think that Epic would give a shit even if the Wii U had Ps4 specs?
Epic has never released a single game for a Nintendo platform, including the N64 and GCN, which were more powerful than the competition at the time. So no. This sudden "SPECS ARE EVERYTHING" mentality is truly hilarious. That being said, it's Nintendo's fault for releasing such a weak console in 2012.

Seriously. I don't understand all the mocking...did anyone really expect UE4 on Wii U anyway?

Well, Rein did previously say that UE4 was scalable enough to run on Wii U, but it sounds like they've decided to focus it entirely on next gen hardware and PC. We just went from a "remote possibility" to "yeah, that's not happening" scenario.

Doesn't matter, though. NeoGAF is filled with more than a handful of Sony diehards who get offended when you insult their previous Vita. The revival of the Vita is prophesized every time a new title is announced.

Face it, people. The Wii U and Vita are niche machines until 3rd parties jump on board.

The Vita and Wii U are both dead systems. I fully admit that. Vita isn't getting revived and people who says it is are deluded beyond belief.

Difference is I'm at least interested in the indie ports coming out on Vita because I don't PC game. Wii U has nothing except for Nintendo games that keep getting delayed.

Nintendo had to try really hard to duplicate the Wii's structural issues while losing all of the advantages and mindshare the Wii created.

But they did it!

YAY IWATA

At this point, I need to comprehend why they went with the energy saving route. It doesn't make any sense at all. With different components they could have released a more powerful console, at the same price of Wii U at launch. Seriously, why? It's so idiotic I can't even try to comprehend why. or better, I feel there's an actual reason: Japanese customes. But the problem is that they should have developed not caring about those but making the best console possible power wise for 299.99/349.99. It's not the gamepad the biggest problem, it's the console itself built with many custom parts just to eat less energy. Why.

Whereas I have always resigned myself to the fact that Nintendo hardware exists chiefly for Nintendo software, and the other way around... I would love to buy one console next generation and be done with it. A console that lets me play my favorite Nintendo games, while also not locking me out of pretty much every other major game released.

Sadly, as long as Iwata is around, that is not going to happen. That man's conservatisim is increasingly turning into a full fledged problem.

I don't think I've heard this much bad news regarding a console since the 3DO. I've always loved Nintendo (sans the Wii) and currently own a WiiU. I'm not going to get rid of it even in the light of all this discouraging news lately but I feel like now more than ever, it will be a strictly first party console. I was looking forward to seeing what third parties would do with the Gamepad.

Mark Rein has been dissing Nintendo consoles for almost decade now, not exactly surprising response, but sigh at all craps being thrown at Wii U. Not boding well.

But then, in two years, when bulging budgets have killed off all but a few Western console-focused studios, publishers will come crawling back with what remained crumpled in their hands, offering these worthless crumbs to the merciful heavens in a surrendering, subservient gesture, and resume sucking at those old and shriveled Unreal Engine 3-powered cartridge-like teats that protrude from Nintendo's 126-year-old, haggard face.

Damn son.

This system is so fucked.

And no this isn't gamecube level. This is dreamcast level, except that it won't die and will have some first party support throughout its lifecycle.

But damn. This is terrible. Iwata needs to get out.

Well if Nintendo would actually say something and not keep quiet we would be getting better Wii U news.

Because until Wiiu the Wii couldnt run UE3. Epic was a PC developer before this gen

Maybe this is the reason why 3rd party don't want to invest in Wii U

The fuck 3rd parties Nintendo 4 liife attitude is pathetic as someone who loves nintendo games

YAY IWATA
What mindshare did Nintendo have to begin with if everyone [from gamers, to media, to 3rd parties] kept saying their success didn't matter because it was on old hardware and non-games?

Neither of those excuses were fact but that didn't stop people from regurgitating it all the same.

Nintendo makes a lot of mistakes, but the most cited ones don't apply to reality. Maybe someone can correct me, but Nintendo has no pretense of competing with PCs.

I would laugh if it wasnt so damn pathetic. The Wiiu is like the industry joke at this point

Just Nintendo being Nintendo. The Wii was an underpowered console with a gimmick that attracted people from outside of gaming's traditional demographic. it was a surprise hit. Most being didn't see lighting striking twice. Tablet controllers aren't as compelling a gimmick as motion controls. Nintendo is going to pick up where they left off with the Gamecube this gen.

And Vita has nothing but the indie games at this point. Fair game if you like the indie games, but that doesn't make it okay. Just like me and the first party games on Wii U

Anyone really think that Epic would give a shit even if the Wii U had Ps4 specs?
They were going around to manufacturers asking for consoles that can run their engine, so yeah, I think they would care.

Especially since if Nintendo did make the Wii U powerful, it would of been out before PS4 and that makes great marketing material.

Brutal, just brutal :O Ah well, this is something that we all should have seen coming after we knew the specs. The wii u is still a worth owning if you want Nintendo games, but other than that, there's not much else. /back to MH3U

Id wait and see what 3rd parties they've grabbed. Pretty sure we're getting DQ.

The gamepad/opening the flood gates for indies + the continuing evolution of miiverse + nintendo games + price cuts, this should keep the wii u strong.

People who say "another nail in the coffin.." are just rediculous and have no insight into its future.

graphics is not everything, look at how many the Wii sold, more like PS3 + 360 combined I think

Absolutely true.
Now if only the Wii U was as revolutionary as the Wii.

What are you talking about?

Wii have sold 99 millions of units.
X360 have sold 75 millions of units.
PS3 have sold 74 millions of units.

75+74 = 149 millions

And PS3 is selling very good worldwide yet... x360 too I think...

It's not about Epic's games, but about their engine.

Why are you mad at the devs? Do you want them to intentionally lose money on a system from a company that has almost never had good third party sales. Then to top it off this same company releases a current gen system at the end of an almost 10 year generation cycle WITH an extra peripheral that will require more dev time and money to develop for.

It's almost comical how nonsensical it is.
