Hey guys, without spoilers.... Does this movie end in a happy note or sad?

My partner hates sad endings..... Like I they have to be together ever after at the end... -.-

Pm me? Lol

I don't want details, none at all

Just happy or sad. Perhaps on a scale to 1-10 how happy is it xD

It just ends.

It really depends on how you look at it determines if you think it's happy or sad.

Personally, I got satisfaction out of the ending.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
It ends with a zombie apocalypse and Ryan Goslin eats Emma Stone. So yeah its pretty uplifting.

J.K. Simmons throws a cymbal at Ryan Gosling's head.

He keeps on staring.

Why isn't this movie playing near me?

I saw this last night and loved it more than any movie I've seen in a long while. While I am a bit of a musical fan and can relate a lot to the story of struggling artists (I was a singing major back in college, and also played in a jazz band for four years), I feel like the cinematography and art on display here kind of transcends musical fans to an audience who wouldn't usually like a musical theatre/classic Hollywood experience. Just a very well-made movie.

The ending sequence
was probably my favorite film moment in recent memory. My fiancee was pretty upset with the end, but I personally thought it was the only way it could end. That ending epilogue piece went from a beautiful, happy song when I originally listened to it, to one of the most painful pieces in the soundtrack after viewing the film. A few of the songs have a very different emotional feeling after knowing what happens in the story. City of Stars is notable for that too.

Definitely a movie I'll be picking up on blu ray when it's released. Hoping this is a film that's put on blu ray quicker than usual, since I'm itching to experience it again.

Yeah it's more or how you take the ending.
It's bittersweet for sure.

Maybe your jazz ears are better then mine but was the final song played the same all the way through or did Sebastien change anything?

On first viewing I was crushed.

But I listened to a podcast about it (The Next Picture Show). They always compare two movies, one current and another older one. They talked about the Umbrellas of Cherbourg which had a pretty sad ending but said that they felt the same way when they were young/capturing that first love but when they were older they can recognize that it is bittersweet but not necessarily a sad ending.

It's not a scathing, searing sadness that you experience after breaking up-- it's the sullen-ness that you did share something with that person at some point, and even if you're in another/better place, you'll still hold those memories. And that's ok.

So on second viewing I appreciated it a lot more.

I expect my wife to be heart broken, crying and saying she hates the movie just due to the ending -.- from what I'm reading

Hopefully she's more open minded than usual, because I really want to see it

Worth it to see it in theaters?

I saw fences, manchester by the sea and la la land over the last few weeks. Best actor is a toss up imo. Such amazing performances in all 3 movies.

Dude, just take her to see it and let her decide on how she feels about the ending lol. Once you both watch it, you'll see what we all mean that the movie ends on a satisfactory note.

Also yes, it's worth it to see in theaters since it's a great musical and visual treat. There are great sequences that I'm glad to have seen on the big screen.

You're saying you think Ryan Gosling is going to win an Oscar?

If he was going to win for something it would be something more serious that shows his emotional range.

Casey Affleck is due but he should have won for Jesse James too so I dunno.

The cinematography is gorgeous and I think can only truly be appreciated on the big screen.

The look on his face when JL
turned on the beats.

My heart sunk 20 floors.

It's a real role.

Do you mean Mia and Sebastian's theme? The really sad piano one? I noticed something about that, and it's not entirely the same.
As far as I can hear, it's played the same, except for the end. Those notes he plays at the end imply a major chord ending the song rather than a minor one, implying a happy end to the song after being used for very dramatic and sad moments throughout the film. It's then backed up by the huge major chord ending of the "THE END" sign. I might have to double check, but that song either ends on a huge minor chord (When he plays it at the club when he's supposed to be playing Christmas music), or is interrupted either by opposing pieces of music in those medleys or just cut outright (As in "Late for the Date" in the soundtrack). When he plays it at the end is the first time that song properly ends. The celesta version of the track does the same thing. Again, I've got to double-check that, but that's what I remember.

I was too into the visuals. Must watch again

Just see it. I was heart broken but that's because I had similar experience to the story. You and your wife may not and would come out of the film feeling better especially since you have each other.

But if you've been through a breakup, it can(and does) really hurt.

Yeah the ending hit really close to home
since I went through a recent break up that ended amicably
. It's gonna stick for a long while.

Yeah. My gf asked why I liked this movie so much. I couldn't quite put it in to words, but the sentiments echoed above ring true:

I recently went through a separation from someone I'd been with for 14 years.
It hit very close to home and brought back some interesting emotions. I connected with La La Land on a very personal level because of it.

Woof that ending hit me super hard. Saw this last night and I actually got a little mad at the movie because I realized what was happening and felt a little manipulated.

Oh and as someone who is a bit of a film and theater geek but on the technical side of things, I was loving the use of actual flats, painted backdrops and even the old school giant Fresnel lights. Everything on the Warner lot was great. I plan to give it a second more clinical watch to see what I can catch. There is a lot of throw back tech and fashion like just the tape deck in Seb's car. Someone behind me actually made a comment like they were shocked, it was funny hearing the reaction.

Though that
Winter, 5 Years Later
moment got some gasps especially once people caught on to what happened.

How do you mean?

Ending spoilers below

Having the movie dangle their life together only to have it pulled away again. It was ok having them not be together but then showing us how happy they would have been felt a little cruel and designed to get the tears out. Which it did, cried pretty hard.

I liked the movie, I just felt like the end was a little mean.

Was the lip synch off in your version? I didn't know if that was intentional or audio error

No, it was all on point when I saw it. Was watching their lip movements and it was matching the soundtrack.

Thought it as kind of awkward...maybe my theater didn't play it as loud as they should have

To be honest, I loved it (as did the rest of the crowd) and have always daydreamed of something like it actually happening whenever I'm stuck in LA traffic while visiting SoCal.

Well the entire end segment is essentially Sebastian recollecting how his life would have been different if he were willing to compromise on his own dreams to be with Mia. Sad, definitely, but I wouldn't call it manipulative or mean. It fits the moment perfectly. Hell, "what if?" is a natural part of breaking up.

Just saw this movie with my wife tonight...amazing.

And as much as I love Lin Manuel-Miranda's work on Moana I think La La Land might be my favorite soundtrack this year.

And living in LA...geez how did they close the 105/110 freeway intersection in the daytime in traffic to film that OP...that's crazy logistics, yo.

It's an unrealistic ideal 20/20 hindsight vision of what their lives could have been. Yes, it's unimaginably sad, but I don't think it's an accurate depiction of reality.

He kisses her instead of shrugging her off when they first meet. He makes it to her play in the front row, the entire theater is packed, everyone loves it. They move to Paris where she becomes a big star and he opens an idealized version of Chicken On A Stick. They live the same exact life as she's currently living at some point with all its happiness.

I'm a sucker for a sad ending, but this transcends that. It's nostalgia and sadness and wishes wrapped with a mutual acceptance of the fact that reality isn't quite so simple.

When they see each other and he starts playing Mia and Seb's theme, I thought to myself the first time that "this will end perfectly if she leaves, looks back and him and then they go back to their lives" and it did not disappoint.
