The paradise christened a "third world country" by our Vice President is being totally rebuilt to have 240% more space, a high speed ferry terminal, and railway access. Cuomo announced the plans alongside Joe Biden himself, and Delta has approved. The project breaks ground next year for a three year build.

This will be the first new airport built in the US since before 9/11/2001. EDIT: maybe? This detail from the article seems to be wrong. Looks like there are one or two others.

New connections to the airport, currently accessible by car and bus, will include a rail link and high-speed ferry.

Delta Air Lines, which maintains a hub at the airport, has approved the plan and will rebuild its terminals. (The fate of the Marine Air Terminal, an official historic building, is unclear.)

It will be the first new airport built in the United States since the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The long-discussed project is expected to break ground in 2016 and take three years to complete—before the inevitable delays and cost overruns. “It is actually happening,” New York governor Andrew Cuomo said in announcing the plan.

4 billion?

Bwhahaha.

More like triple the price when done.

I don't mind. Infrastructure really sucks in the US.

I fly through this airport pretty often. I wonder what prices and schedules through there will be like during the construction project.

What's so bad about LGA? Honest question.

I've been to worse airports. LAX comes to mind. Furthermore, go to a Greyhound terminal to see some real public transportation misery.

I could understand if LGA was a blemish on NYC's impeccable transportation system, but we're talking about a city with grimy subways and Penn Station.

LGA is a good airport but traveling around the world I have definitely seen much better ones from places I wouldn't expect.

Hey, NYC's subways are the best in the country. Not the cleanest, but they go everywhere. Also, don't talk shit about Penn Station. You can get cold beer on tap in the middle of the day there.

For real though, LGA is falling apart. Biden was being kind when he described it as a third-world country.

Wow. This tidbit is what really stands out to me - how is that even possible, the U.S. Likely had 100 malls and stadiums open in the last 15 years, no?

I grew up by Shea Stadium. I used to sit in the bleachers and watch the jets taxi on the runways. It was cool. (Yes, the Mets sucked).

I guess I just feel that the people floating this argument (Joe Biden) aren't normal people riding the subways, buses, or even the yellow cabs.

If someone finds LGA that deplorable, I don't know how they get around NYC at all.

LAX is probably the worst I've ever been to. I was blown away the first time I was there that such a prolific airport could be such a shithole.

We need to update and standardize our infrastructure nationwide. Engineers should be designing roads that can relay information or power to self-driving electric cars, made of new materials, modular, etc.

No expense to be spared for rich flyers.

Subway riders? Let them rot

Lol since when did you have to be rich to fly on a plane? I get that its more expensive but its a goddamn plane. The subway needs a ton of work though. Bums, garbage and rats everywhere. When I went to Asia it was mind blowing how nice their subway/train system was. At least the LIRR is still around.

See you in 2030 when this is done. Three years, $4B my ass

Also, a 30 second google tells me that this first since 9/11 claim is bullshit too:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Florida_Beaches_International_Airport

I wouldn't even call this a new airport
Multiple articles say it is to be the first built since 9/11. They don't even say "first according to". Seems to be incorrect, so I'm wondering why they are stating it like a known fact instead of just as a claim.

So one of the arguments about how Cuomo is a toxic bumbling idiot is that he's ready to dump $4bn into one of three airports, while the subway system, which carries millions more people, collapses on itself.

Oh, by the way, did anyone notice that the $4bn cost is BEFORE the planned airtrain and ferry?

He talks about 3rd world infrastructure...behold, the global epicenter of money

This is what happens you you elect someone who travels exclusively by limo and business class airplane

Once the DoD thinks our infrastructure isn't up to snuff for their needs it will probably get a massive overhaul like the massive highway system in the 50s. Just demonstrate that anything you want is a national security issue then boom, money is raining from the sky.

Not enough lounge space for the elite flyers that Cuomo cares about

Sort of like when we spend billions on a new stadium to add luxury boxes

what makes this airport outdated?

I've gone through LaGuardia a handful of times, and it's not even in my Bottom 3 for airports (that'd probably go to Logan in Boston, CVG in Cincinnati, & MIA in Miami), but it could certainly use the update. It's a bit stuck in the past, mostly in that the airport can't adequately move and support the amount of people who fly through there and the facilities are just kind of old and busted.

I remember walking into a bathroom at LGA once and there were a few tiles missing. In the space of one of the tiles, there was square foot-sized hole. There happened to be an airport employee in there, and when I asked him what happened, he just shrugged and said, "I'unno," and then proceeded to DUCK TAPE A PLANK OVER THE HOLE. He even nodded and made a "problem solved" gesture afterwards haha.

And if they can get subway stops built into it, that'd be fucking awesome. It's one of the things I love about living in Chicago. Whether I'm going to O'Hare or Midway, I can take the train all the way there without having to transfer to a bus.
