I'm starting a new job and my current PC has been on its last legs for a while now, so I'm looking to get a laptop towards the end of January or so. I'm looking for something in the $1000-$1300 range and relatively compact, small enough to fit easily into an average-sized messenger bag.

Anyone have advice or recommendations for some particular brands/models?

i've got an ibm x40, if you're interested in those. i'm also somewhat familiar with the dell 300m and 700m.
