Oh wow, album of the year by far. They kind of remind me of a now-gone band The Benjamin Gate (friends of one of my best friends) but more driving, less moody and more lush (basically more rock than alternative). This album takes everything good about rock and puts it all together so beautifully, the only thing I might want more for the next album is perhaps a couple nice guitar solos, but thats probably just cause I play.

No, you don't understand. I have disliked rock for a long time, it lost it's way. I appreciated some newer bands like Franz Ferdinand, but ultimately they were just emulating old styles more than creating them new, they were good but they weren't really FRESH. But The Killers somehow take elements of the old and make them into something new and fresh, but without making it into some crap that loses the essence of what makes rock good. I haven't heard good rock for so long, I've heard good stuff with distorted guitars but it wasn't really rock. But rock is back now, and it's named The Killers.

That is all. No, seriously, if you like the Killers, you are guaranteed to love this band. I might have to start another thread to alert all the members of GAF.

I remember a few months ago all the English press was saying how The Killers were the BEST. BAND. EVER. It just goes to show you that the English press is dumb lyke whoa.

The Killers are okay, but nothing really groundbreaking. They're just playing some indie dance/pop that other bands have been doing for years now.

Yes, but not many (if any) bands in that genre have put together such a cohesive and accessible album like Hot Fuss. The album is just slick. It's damn near perfect, especially the US version, with the inclusion of "Change Your Mind" (though I miss "Indie Rock And Roll" a bit.

The Killers rawk, I like how they've combined kinda electro stuff with rock/indie stuff. Stuff is cool.

I read one review that thought they were listening to the new Duran Duran album. I do like The Killers a lot, but there is nothing new about them.

I was really, really disappointed in that Killers disc... and it seems like I'm way in the minority. There were a couple tracks that I thought were good, but so much of it seemed forced, and way too slick/overproduced. It's like they made a list of everything that made Turn on the Bright Lights and other records of the ilk really good and basically said, "k, we can do this too!" I think I was sucked in by the hype. I only paid $6 for it, though, so it's not a big loss.

i like the album a lot, but im a big fan of 80's music. its true that their music isnt anything "new", its a retro 80's rock/pop sound with perhaps more cohesive 90's electronic elements mixed witha bit of brit punk growling here and there.
i also like the sounds album a lot, if you ever liked joan jett/blondie you'll like them...very "produced" songs though, obviously very manufactured. fun to listen to nonetheless. i'll take the sounds/the killers anyday over the generic modern rock they have had going since the late 90's.

It's funny people mention Duran Duran (looking forward to their new album BTW), because I think they always had a very slick and produced sound as well. I'm defintiely not put off by it, it's ok so long as you do it right and I think The Killers have done so. And nitewulf is right, I do love Blondie, well at least their older stuff.

It's good, but I don't consider it anywhere near album of the year material. It's one of those albums you play a lot for a few weeks because its infectious, but that's about it. Kind of like Franz Ferdinand.

Hot Fuss is like Turn On The Bright Lights, but with better songwriting, actual melodies in the songs, better intrumentation, much better production, better vocals... I could probably think of more, but it hurts me to compare The Killers to Interpol. :p

The Killers sound nothing like Interpol. The easiest bands to compare The Killers to are Franz Ferdinand and The Moving Units.

interpol is pretty different...i didnt really like antics all that much, not very innovative or anything. may be their older stuff is better?

People compare Franz Ferdinand to Interpol. If they're comparable and people can compare Killers to Franz Ferdinand, then they're all in pretty much the same circle for most people. I don't see the big deal.

As for the last question, Turn On the Bright Lights is better, I think. Their material before and around that otherwise was pretty weak, in my opinion.

i think the comparison between FF and the killers comes from both bands having an 80's influenced sound. not to mention, both bands also have pop/disco elements.
but interpol seemed much more rock to me (i only heard antics), regular guitar driven rock, no synths (IIRC). ill check out the album you mentioned. i did like their live performane a lot though.

I didn't like The Sounds. =/

I wouldn't say The Killers are like Franz Ferdinand or Interpol. They are all different styles. Franz I'd say is more fitting amongst bands like The Fever and Popgun.

Nitewulf let me touch u! I just checked out "the sounds" and they're great! :D

yeah, making songs this catchy should be a punishable offense. either way i checked out Dogs Die in Hot Cars because of your pimping, and they have some good tracks. I suggest the beautiful south to you, but since you live in europe, perhaps you are familiar with them already.

If you like The Sounds you'll enjoy the new Sahara Hotnights album Kiss and Tell. It has similarities to Living In America except the songs sound different from one another.

"Mine for Life" is almost too catchy, it stands out the most to me so far! Cool that you checked out Dogs Die in Hot Cars, glad I can pimp some Scottish/UK bands :D My folks have a lot of Beautfil South stuff, never really listened to it so maybe I'll give it a go.

Nothing on Hot Fuss is like, 1/100th as good as "Obstacle 2" from TotBL, melodically, instrumentationwise, or lyrically (I'm sorry but "Well somebody told me / You had a boyfriend / Who looks like a girlfriend / That I had in February of last year / It's not confidential / I've got potential" are not good lyrics). The production on Hot Fuss is probably technically better, but that clean, polished to a sheen production sounds like shit to me (ie, the last Donnas record). And saying that the Killers have better vocals is kind of laughable, because the first thing I said when I listened to HF was "hahaha, man, this guy is tryin' way too hard to sound like that dude from Interpol."

Franz Ferdinand is such a better record than Hot Fuss that it hurts me to compare them, though.

The Killers are musical confectionary. Hot Fuss is definitely all about hitting play and not thinking about the music all that much. I have no idea how somebody could mistake them for being innovative. This style has been the predominant song and dance for at least the past 3 years. . .and it hasn't been near original or innovative for at least 20 years.

Mmmm, I listened to some of it and it's kinda... Avril-ish. :\

Hey, I've been pimping The Sounds for a while now :p

Anyway, glad to see that other people enjoy them. I downloaded some unmarked mp3 tracks on accident from someone on Soulseek a long time ago, and they turned out to be The Sounds. The first time I played "Seven Days A Week", I knew I was in love.

Oh, and INTERPOL SUCKS!! (compared to The Killers) AHAHAHHAHAHA I don't know how you could like Interpol's vocals better than The Killers man. The Interpol dude sounds like he's a cheap imitation of Talking Heads.

I'd say to people that like The Sounds to check out theSTART - mainly their first album "Shakedown!" - it has that kind of 80's vibe too!

Werd. "Shakedown!" is awesome.

Well, I've been listening to The Killers after my friend turned me on to them like 2 weeks ago and been quite quite enjoying them. I don't think they're anywhere near as good as Interpol (or anywhere near related), but Hot Fuss is really catchy and fun. Even guilty pleasures are still pleasurable.

Also, I couldn't enjoy Franz Ferdinand if my life depended on it. Sorry.

Listen to "The New" and "Untitled," and then go back and listen to "Mr. Brightside" and "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll." There is no comparison, really. Interpol are far better. They have very strong musicianship, which is something the Killers sorely lack. Furthermore, while some accuse Interpol of being heavily derivative of the British Post-Punk scene (bands like Joy Division, The Chameleons, The Smiths, and Echo and the Bunnymen in particular) as well as NYC bands like Television and the Voidoids, at least they bring their own flare and some sense of originality to their music. It also has a lot of emotional depth, and is very atmospheric and beautiful. The Killers' music is totally banal, nothing even remotely interesting about it. It's mindless music, devoid of any technical merit. And Interpol's songwriting is a lot better. Seriously, just listen to "The New."

And I don't really think Banks sounds like David Byrne at all.. um.. but whatever.

:)

Quite possibly the worst lyrics ever

Franz Ferdinand - Michael

This is where I'll be
So heavenly
So come and Dance with me Michael

So Sexy, I'm sexy

I'm all that you see, you want to see
came and dance with me Michael

So close now your so close now
come and dance with me
come and dance with me
So come and dance with me

Michael you're the boy with all the leather hips
Stucky hair, sticky hips stubble on my sticky lips
Michael your the only one I ever want only one I ever want only one I ever want
Beautiful boys on a beautiful dance floor
Michael your dancing like a beautiful dance-whore
Michael waiting on a Silver platter now
and nothing matters now

This is what I am I am a man so come and dance with me Michael

So strong now it's strong now
so come and dance with me Michael

I'm all that you'll be you'll ever see
So come and dance with me Michael

So close now You're close now
Come and dance with me come and dance with me So come and dance with me!

Michael you're the boy with the leather hips sticky hair sticky lips stubble on my sticky hips
Beautiful boys on a beautiful dance floor Michael you're dancing like a beautiful dance whore
Michael waiting on a silver platter now
and nothing matters now!
nothing matters now nothing matters now and nothing matters now

Michael you're the boy with the leather hips sticky hair sticky lips stubble on my sticky lips Beautiful boys on a beautiful dance floor

Michael waiting on a silver platter now...
and nothing matters now!

On "Obstacle 2", there are some very strong similarities in their voices.

I've had Interpol's album for 2 years now, and I've tried to like it so many times, but I just can't force myself to get into it. Strong musicianship, better songwriting... I don't hear it. My tastes prefer melody and structure over jangly, reverbed open chords repeated ad nauseum, so that cuts out like half of Interpol's songs right there.

[EDIT]
Ok, I had a b-side or something from Interpol that I cannot find anywhere on my PC anymore. Somehow it got deleted, WTF. Anyway, it was a slow tempo song, with piano or keyboards, and a very nice vocal melody in the beginning. I don't remember the name of it, unfortunately. That was my favorite song of theirs. I also like the song "Precipitate."

yep, thats the first tune that sorta sticks with you. then "reggie", "like a lady" and the other tracks slowly catch on.

ok as for the killers, "somebody told me" is obviously not meant to be taken seriously! come on! i thought it was a take on that early 90's blur hit "girls and boys" (which i like a lot as well). i think "jenny was a friend of mine" has good lyrics, it tells a story, kinda reminds me of that noir novel, "they shoot horses, dont they?" and also "the stranger"...because, "there's no motive for this crime". existentialism! :p

anyway, i think you guys are taking innovation too seriously, in that case we should just listen to the talking heads all day (they rock), i think the rapture has a pretty unique sound among these new bands, if that turns you on. but then, they are pretty much disco.
also i know you guys dont listen to a lot of mainstream rock but back in the days i thought collective soul had a very unique sound, i liked them a lot. of course they pretty much vanished off the face of the earth since then.

Ok so today I checked out Interpol and the free MP3 that is on the Action Action site, and I guess I have similar tastes as Error Macro.
