Leak Reveals New Details on Halo Combat Evolved Remake: Hybrid Unreal Engine 5 and Blam Engine, Sprint Mechanic, Co-Dev Studio, and More

Leaks/rumors mentioned in the article:

  1. A developer who helped co-developed MCC is helping Halo Studios with the remake, particularly with programming and design. It's not Certain Affinity.
  2. Sprint is included in the current build of the game.
  3. Level redesigns are coming, specifically a rework of The Library to make it less repetitive.
  4. The hybrid engine using a mix of UE5/Blam! similar to Oblivion remastered. UE5 will handle graphics and rendering while Blam! will handle underlying gameplay logic and world systems.
  5. A separate Halo multiplayer project is still in the works. It will potentially be a long-term live service title.

I'm sure plenty of people will love whatever they churn out, but honestly? I finally got around to playing the remaster of 1 in MCC about a year back, and the complete hackjob that was the art ruined the atmosphere for me. I don't have a lot of hope for this one trending in the right direction. Throw in UE5 and - well, at least we can be sure it'll be a technical mess.

Yeah, some of the assets in the remaster are horrid.

I'd actually be really looking forward to an actual remake if done properly as theres lots in the campaign that could be improved. But these chumps wont be able to pull it off, especially now we have UE5 in the mix as well.

Wanted a continuation of the story in Infinite.
I actually liked Infinite but it was a shell of what might have been. If they expanded on that with actual proper levels and decent set pieces as well as the "open" world then we'd have a winner.

Shame they'll toss it all out and fuck it up again.

The separate multiplayer project is Project Ekur, and it was supposedly the Battle Royale turned into an extraction shooter.

It is meant to be the replacement for Halo Infinite multiplayer, built solely on UE5.

I had no idea a remake was happening. Not really sure how good it will be, there hasn't been any good halo feels in a long time.

I thought the whole point of this remake was to move away from Blam/Slipspace and build everything on one solid engine. I'm not sure I buy this rumor.

Sounds crap, just release a proper 100% working remaster of Halo 1-3 (are ODST and Reach as good? Never played them) with no art style changes instead of this

They are moving to UE5 solely, but that's for the multiplayer and future campaigns.

The point of the remake is to give all the devs experience with UE5, plus the PS5 release setting the stage similar to Gears Reloaded.

For remaking older games quickly, this dual engine approach seems to be best one.

This sounds horrible. I already think that using UE5 as the renderer for the Oblivion "remake" was a mistake. And changing the library? Adding sprint? If they want to make Call of Duty, they should make Call of Duty.

What the fuck, man....

Have had a theory that none of these companies have their tech guys anymore. The vaunted HALO STUDIOS is literally getting an MCC contractor to write the fucking skeleton of the game. The genius minds at HALO STUDIO will just lay around all day on bean shaped couches and talk about concept art. Composing emails, telling contractors how this new Halo game they're making should play and feel.

UE5 is spreading like a cancer, unless Epic can patch it up it'll go down as my most hated engine ever. My biggest PC has a 5090 and 9950x3D and I can still see occasional stutter in almost every UE5 game. Quite amazing really. I won't expect smooth performance in this Halo game that's for sure.

Oblivion remake is probably the worst optimized game I played this gen (and I played on a Pro), so I hope they get this right. Also the idea of having "hybrid" engines does not sound hot.

Not that unheard of. I'm guessing the number of people available to them who are familiar with the code and have worked on it recently enough to be able to jump in and work and help get other people up to speed is very small.

... so the MCC, then?

I'm less concerned with them trying to use UE5 then I am with them trying to make another Halo live-service. Infinite is among the worst live services ever released, and it took nearly two and a half years before they managed to release updates on time. The community was dead within six months and its corpse still lingers about. Halo Infinite sank a cool half billion, caused Microsoft to fire the CEO and gut the studio, and forced their hand to go back to CE because, frankly, what the fuck else do they have? Another Halo live service failure would likely be the final nail in the coffin for Halo.

Is that's what's happening? They plan to have this remake as a launch title for the next console?
Current theory in the community is that Microsoft is trying to do what they wanted with the Series X: launch an Xbox with a big new Halo title. The timelines are about right to try, but everything we have says Halo: CE is a multiplatform title, so no idea why they'd bother, frankly.

I assume they're going to bang the most powerful drum again and use Halo to drive up hype for the console.
But is Halo still a big thing?

Remakes will never be able to recreate the atmosphere of the original because of a simple fact that is the original creators are no longer there anymore. Like you can get close, if lucky, but yeah it's very hard to nail the art direction.

Infinite sequal can drive interest.

Not another remake though.

I imagine they will get the live service part right this time. Now that old, brazen fanbase apparently has stopped (or maybe reduced?) playing Infinite.

So it will use the same game logic as Halo CE? Same levels etc

Because if they use BLAM they can hardly remake the game like RE4 remake

So they will just put cosmetics on the 25 old game.. again? Wtf

They're doing the same thing Oblivion remaster and Demon's Soul remake did

They were straight 1-1 remakes though I think?

They are re-designing the repeating levels and boring bits in this and likely making things worse.

The introduction of the Flood was one of gaming's greatest moments they should leave things the fuck alone. This will be the gaming equivalent going to see a really average cover band down the pub murder your favourite tunes.
