I can't help but wonder if the game world is curved somewhat, a thought that's often occurred to me when considering open world games. In open world games, one of the biggest draws is the scale of the world, and being able to see it stretch out before you contributes to that scale. Some games make use of high vantage points that allow you to see more of the world, but I've often thought that you could improve that by making the entire world curved slightly. Like it were inside a bowl. If you shaped your game world like that, you'd constantly be able to see far, far away and the sense of scale of the world would be a constant effect. Not only would you be able to see things that were far away, you'd be able to see the intervening space. I've often wondered if that would work in an open world game. I'm probably just going crazy, but you sure can see a lot terrain in these shots, even when Link doesn't seem to be all that high.

We got a good look at him already

It's most likely his starting suit like the last 3 home console Zelda games (and Spirit tracks)

There's gotta be more to it than that though.

Not only is he in a different suit, but he has the hood and cape too. And the hood works independently of the suit. Sometimes he has it on and sometimes he doesn't, though they never show him take it off or put it on in the new footage. They show him throw it off at E3, but that was an in-game cutscene, so I doubt he actually "throws it away" in the real game.

Also, he's not just putting up the hood or taking it down. He puts on and takes off the entire hood/cape combo. But in game he wouldn't just throw it on the ground like in the E3 trailer. So this means it must be an item the player has some control over, which should mean that it won't just be disregarded later in the story. So the entire outfit may be link's default outfit.

So yeah, he might get the green outfit later, but the hood/cape should be there to stay.

I don't know why but I like having clothing options. I would be quite happy to see the Green Tunic, and others return, but I do hope we have a bit more control over Link's appearance and getup.

I don't mind things like OOT or TP. Don't really think the character needs any customization outside of clothing though, but that's a different conversation.

As for the idea of the hood being a part of Links total outfit with the green under it, that could either be really cool looking or weird.

Having a curved world would actually diminish the view that you get, because mountains in the distance would appear smaller/lower. You just get more sky. I think it'd be unlikely that they'd go for this.

And not like it should too haha I wonder where I'll find time to explore this two beauties next year...

For a Zelda game, it's gonna be massive. Twilight Princess or Wind Waker won't even come close.

I'd be happy with just retextures of basic stuff and being able to control whether he wears the outfit we've seen or the green tunic or whatever other outfit he acquires like the Zora Suit.

The blue outfit is basically the same type of thing as the green one. He's just missing the hat. Without the hat, the hood should look fine even in green, but yeah, it might look weird with the hat.

I bet we'll get a whole bunch of clothing options, different tunics, cloaks, the whole shebang. A way to customise Link without changing the character

Haha the two teams are trying to one-up each other. What a great time to be gaming.

EDIT: As a Final Fantasy IX gamer who spent DAYS on Chocobo treasure hunting, I don't care if this world is barren. Just let me explore the shit out of it!

Not curved downward, like you're on the surface of a globe. Curved the other way. So mountains would actually appear higher. You'd get less sky and more land, which is more useful to the player, since all that sky is mostly wasted space.

I still have a hard time beleiving it will look this good. Please Nintendo dont bullshit us. Obviously the res/aliasing wont though.

But it already looks better than that

if you are going by Aonuma's comment a week or so back, then so they say. If you are going by the TGA footage, you cant really tell, and am leaning towards, no.

While there's certainly room for the old green tunic and hat to appear again, I don't know. It just feels like the blue outfit + hood is more than that to me. Given how they've been putting blue here and there on Link's outfits since WW (starting outfit in WW, blue wristguards in SS, prominent blue scarf that they signed off on for HW) and the fact that they talk about "reinthinking the Zelda conventions" makes me think that they might see a future in blue-clad Link.

Ah I see. That's interesting, it would be a good illusion for sure. Though I think it's built into the map design, ie. make the further mountains taller, bigger border plateaus, etc.

Here's a thought. What if link is being stalked by enemies and him wearing the hood makes him harder ti find by the big enemies roaming the world. In the e3 trailer he was already seen so he only through it off when he was ready to fight. Also he wouldn't be able to attack or use his bow with the cloak on. Doubt that's it but could be a cool mechanic.

Yeah. I suppose I don't really think it'll happen in this game. It's just something I've thought about before, and it seems like one of those things Nintendo would do. But I doubt it.

Given all the various versions of this footage we've seen, I still don't think we have it best quite yet. For me the ideal video would be a combination of

a corrected perspective video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF9xDrQ9gKQ

with the Japanese audio from here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMXD5DxbXog
so that we can hear the sound effects and music a little bit better

along with subtitles for Aonuma and Miyamoto

and then if possible, add Nanashrew's color correction that they've demonstrated throughout this thread.

Here you go. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gASW27afKLo

Adjusted the perspective, took the japanese audio, english subtitles and made the colors a little bit warmer to decrease the blue input from the TV.

Enjoy.

Edit: Its automated youtube subs from the engl. version.. if anyone has a better transcript i can add it later.

Don't know about retextures, because of what I said, but that's just me, unlockable tunics that do extra stuff is perfectly fine with me though. Especially if they come up with some really good ideas, like a shadow tunic, that allows you to move along shadows like the inklings move along slime in Splatoon.

The two are pretty similar, but I think there's a few differences here and there. Like I said though, I really wouldn't want to not have the green tunic, so if the it has to look weird, I'll take it. :P

Nintendo doesn't make changes major character r , they would never change the most icon thing in the series.

Intresting idea, and was kinda cool in Halo, though you couldnt actually go to the stuff in the BG. One con would be how hard it would be on draw distance. I know in other games, they use objects/geometry to break line of sight , so that assets in the BG dont have to be loaded or shown. The game is already doing some LOD stuff, can even see it in the TGA off screen footage. But I could see this idea making that even more difficult for the engine/hardware. But im sure they could do it if they really wanted.

Ewwwww no. With such a big world to traverse, the stamina bar will only be a hassle.
But I wouldnt mind if the magic meter regenerated after a while, but as it is, its not happening.

You won't be traversing the world on foot, so the stamina bar should definitely come back. It made link a lot more acrobatic and made things like vine climbing more fun.

And besides, it let you run faster. With a bigger world, wouldn't you want that?

Why not? I never used a horse nor anything on Skyrim. And they can easily make you run faster without bringing the stamina back. Hell they even took the carrot system off.

Well based on the footage they're not increasing his run base run speed, so you might want to consider using the horse. : p

Holy crap, this is awesome! Thanks for this! Now excuse me while I watch this about 20 more times!

I don't know if this has been pointed out yet but I found it interesting and kept catching my eye. Around 1:17 in the video Aonuma starts to move the camera to the right but very quickly pulls it back almost trying not to show off this structure in the distance. Its odd shaped and doesn't look all that natural, it looks like a dome like at Epcot in Disney. Also looks like there might be some type of cave entrance to it.

That upper part of the wall looks like it's made of white bricks. Maybe there's a town over there?

Yep, me too. Sometimes in TP I would ride Epona to places long after I unlocked the ability to warp there. I don't think that over world was particularly well designed, but sometimes I just like to wander the Zelda universe.

Edit: They really need to let us take Epona into towns. It's always bothered me that this standard action in medieval Europe can't usually be done in Zelda, because it would make travel a lot more cohesive. Kakariko Village in TP was a step in the right direction, and an open-world structure will hopefully finally go all the way with it.

I think we will be able to take Epona into towns, past Zelda games it was mostly due to hardware constraints, this is a big open World I dont think the towns will be cut off or separate.

I think only dungeons and inside of buildings will have different loads.

While I know the reason the TGA footage looks inferior is because of being off camera and low quality. But it still kinda makes me scared that the final game won't look as good as that E3 reveal video (I know it will, but still).

So, I rewatched the E3 reveal and I felt a lot of comfort after hearing Aonuma talk about modeling the new game after the openness of the original Zelda. I also saw the Wind Waker HD footage they showed and I thought: "well, this looks better than the TGA gameplay video, but it can't possibly look better than what the final Zelda U game will look like".

And I felt peace.

Yeah, I know. I have read this whole thread, and have watched all the analysis videos. I know I'm just quietly worrying about nothing, but it still made me feel better watching that E3 reveal again after so many months.

The bottom part of that almost looks tree-like. Maybe a re-purposed deku tree corpse?

could just be some tiled/repeated texture.

It definitely looks like a dome. I wonder where it is on the map.

EDIT: Going off the map, it kinda looks like it should be a lake. 0_o

If theories are correct, and we're in the new kokiri forest region, it really could be a repurposed deku tree. They match up, geographically speaking.

So I was thinking originally that it was part of what we are considering kokiri forest area. But looking at the map at different zoom levels and the location of this dome relative to the waterfall I'm thinking this might be part of Zoras domain.

At the most zoomed in level of the map I can't find the waterfall but if you look at the divide between Kokiri Forest area and the beginning of Zoras domain it looks like that might actually be the waterfall.
