LEGO |OT6| We Only Build in Black. And Sometimes Very Dark Grey.

I hate to admit it, but I've been very tempted by the Mega Blocks 50th anniversary Enterprise.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91f8jKosGZL._SL1500_.jpg

I hate to admit that I am tempted by it too, but my gut just keeps telling me it is going to be flimsy.

On a different note, finished the Milano 2.0.

There is a lot to like here, but it is the inferior to the original set released. There are some repeated techniques, such as how the angles of the wings are done, but the entire thing just feels too small and dainty in the end.

The only part of the build that really stuck out to me was how this whole part at the front comes together:
l3L7t4nl.jpg

It is attached using only 2 hinge plates, but where they kind of criss cross over one another on the hinges themselves. It is a technique I have never seen before to get that kind of angle, and it was very cool to see come together.

Unfortunately, the rest of the ship was not as cool as that small segment.

Short version: wait for a sale. Definitely worth getting, but not an absolute must buy like the original ship.

Now to impatiently wait for an official UCS Milano.

So I'm pleasantly surprised with another Friends set. I got Heartlake Summer Pool for my daughter - she was able to put it together almost entirely by herself. It's basically a stealth tropical resort pastel'ed and slapped with a Friends logo. It also has the best Lego restroom I've seen (admittedly I haven't seen many). I'm willing to forgive the pandering because the design is excellent, modular, and is durable enough for the target age group to play with. Lego obviously has a lot of talented people working for them. I'm impressed with what they can do when they're not tied to a license or preexisting design.

I actually bought this and have it on my desk at work. It's actually very sturdy. The downside of it was that Mega Bloks quality control is still crap. There are four 5x5 plates with rounded corners that hold the bridge module on to the top of the saucer. On mine, two of the four plates were warped and wouldn't clutch on to the plates below it. I had to request Mega Bloks send me new ones. I requested four new ones just to be on the safe side and of the replacements, one of them was still warped! The good news was that I was able to fix the problem and now its fine, but it still shows how far behind they are of LEGO in terms of quality control. I will say that they sent out the replacements very fast and I had them in about a week and a half. Also, I would never pay full price for it. It was on sale on Amazon for a pretty deep discount.

The original retail price is $250.00. I paid $150.00 for mine last year. I remember seeing it as low as $100.00 at one point. Looks like the current price listed as of today is $178.00

Thanks.

I should never have opened this thread. I just don't have space for these things. I own the original 2 Star Wars UCS sets, plus a couple others I grabbed along the way but they're boxed in my storage room.

Regardless, I find myself considering a couple more UCS sets before they retire.. ugh.

When will we get a minidoll character in a LEGO movie, I wonder

Well, I was watching Disney Junior channel with my daughter and it seems that there is already a Lego minidoll show with the Disney princess. I saw a small clip of Elza and Anna from Frozen, minidoll style.

But if you mean a minidoll mixed with minifigs in a Lego movie, it seems unlikely.

It does seem unlikely but I wish they would. A lot of kids would love it. My daughter would flip.

I think you could get some great humor out of the differences in design too, especially the fact that their feet are stuck together

Went to the Lego Store the first time in a long while, it's been awhile since I went in there and automatically saw quite a few sets that I wanted. Bought the Riddler set but man do I need to grab one of the Moana sets.

Built myself a super ghetto light box today, I grabbed a fig & flag to christen it and my youngest felt like she could improve the scene - she was right. I'm legitimately proud of how she achieved the flying pterodactyl. Is it sad that my six year old knows where in the LEGO room the clear 1x2 bricks are kept?

how did you make the lightbox?

I wasn't kidding when I called it ghetto. The thing is barely a cube.

My goal was to build a light box using parts we had around the house so that's what I did. I used a bunch of mismatched "quarter round" (aka baseboard finishing) and cut each piece down to 50cm. I've got a battery-powered brad nailer that made things really easy when it came to joining the 12 pieces.

Tissue paper on the sides & top as well as a big piece of white paper to act as the "infinity" base. My lighting isn't great right now as I just grabbed what was close - it'll be better when I dig out some more appropriate lights.

hmmm I wonder if you could use one of those Lack coffee tables from ikea, they're cheap as chips and about a similar size

When I used to take toy figures for my old website, I used display foam board to make light box. As for light I used natural sun light bulb put into my desk lamp.

Thought it was Wetwired for a minute with the foot in there. First time I saw anyone use tissue paper and the results look good.
I like your organization.

I used PVC pipes so I could collapse and reconfigure mine easily. Cheap too if you already have a PVC pipe cutter. The expensive part for my light box was I ended up buying nylon rip stop white fabric to throw over it. With the PVC pipes I can put it on it's side and turn it into a small light panel too. I never had to alter the size, but I just drape the cloth over it so I can always change the size by cutting different length pipes.

EDIT: I noticed the King's Mech lurking behind the light box. I suspect he has slain all those minidolls.

EDIT 2: Oh, tissue paper as in wrapping tissue paper. I was thinking blowing your nose type tissue. Duh!

Built the first two bags of the Mini Cooper yesterday.

Man, I love these Creator Expert vehicles. Always a treasure trove of interesting techniques, and the end result is always so packed with fun details. This one had a lot of 1x1 tiles for the seats, which were annoying to get straight, but the end result is great.

Bag 3 will probably be for tomorrow. Seems like still a long way to go for just one set of bags.

I was going to reply wrapping tissue is great, but saw you got it in the edit.

I've made a real ghetto lightbox before out of PVC pipes that were actually meant to assemble into a laundry hamper. Anything that makes soft light.

I just finished the VW beetle. very good build, but for some reason, enjoyed the Ferrari more.

The foot was a joke since Wet was the one who asked about the light box.

The tissue paper seems to work well-like I said it's an ugly thing but it seems to do the trick, lighting wise.

It's funny that you say that. It was literally looking at one of our Ikea end tables that reminded me to do this. It'd definitely work.

That's a great idea. A while back I went looking for some piping to do it that way but I really wanted to use parts I had lying around.

We're lucky that for the most part storage really isn't a huge issue.

Edit: Just saw the foot. This won't end well.

The foot tax is going to make its way into the moc contest, isn't it?

I've been looking at simple light boxes recently and came across this one in the picture below as well as reading about using a Bathtub as a light box (although I haven't seen any pictures of a tub being actually used nor have tried it myself yet)

In Glasgow on a day trip and went in to the Lego store and got the Belle and Beast brickheadz. Was mighty tempted at Assembly Square but I have a Nintendo Switch preordered.

I would say I'm looking forward to building them but my partner wants to as it's her favourite Disney film... Last set I bought her was an Easter bunny that is still not built.

I too have a Switch coming this Friday, but it's double VIP points starting on 3/6 and I've already braced the household that a modular is coming. Still haven't decided which one.

the foot tax is real and the rest of you better start paying up

Seems like someone is putting down the foot. Sorry mate, I'm protected by Fair Use Act here in the States. It allows me to use some footage. I'll go toe to toe with you in court if you wish. I do understand why you may be upset. If the shoe was on the other foot, I'd be upset too. Anyway, you are not the sole owner of the meme. It now belongs to LEGOGAF.

Edit: All your foot are belong to GAF.

I wish I owned this set so I could recreate this:

Still playing with set 31062 for the MOC contest:

31062 MOC #3 a

31062 MOC#3 b

31062 MOC#3 c

And for those that are curious behind my thought process, an early attempt at the same idea -very crude!:

31062 MOC#3 - test - you can see what i chose to keep and what i didn't. It was kinda bad, and I was going to scrap the idea, but i sat down and had another go, and what you see is what I got.

I find that every time I play with the set, I get a better feel for the pieces and what I can and can't achieve. I kind of need to keep making to improve my models. In that vein, more likely my later models will be the submission.

And because I was taking photos with my nice camera, my completed VW Beetle (not that it's any different to everyone else's!):

Nice. I'm always amazed at what people come up with in these contests. I didn't think there would be many possibilities based on that set. Have people been posting entries already? What's the link to it?

So we have another 'ladies' Ideas set. To be honest there was not much to chose from that had real chances (Ideas now has one building planned, SW are no go, that Lambo is not really that legendary, LHC and Lovelace geeky but not enough)

Let's at least hope Voltron will have better fate as the 'delayed' Start Citizen set.

What a shame we're not getting the Merchant's House, one of the best "Ideas" proposals I've seen. I wonder how expensive it'd be to Bricklink....

The next review period has so many good stuff in it. Iron Giant, The Volkswagen, The ship-in-a-bottle, ...

Personally, as a big lover of all things Portugal, I hope the Vintage Tram makes it.
