Man, seeing Conan's name announced on the Tonight Show and have him do his dance number he always does with the strings would be the perfect entrance. Just to see a different audience think "wtf is he doing??" would be great. Anyway, does anybody know if Conan or Jay mentioned this on either of their shows tonight?

jay had a whole tonight show 50th anniversary thing going on with old clips. he sat down and told the world he was leaving in 2009 and conan would be his replacement. he didnt want it to happen like with him and letterman and he said he didnt want friendships to be ruined like they did during that whole ordeal so he came out and said it.

tonights conan was a repeat like usual. seriously, how much vacation time does this guy get?

also, does anyone know leno's salary/contract?

tonight (tuesday night) conan will talk about it during his show.

and according to the ny post, leno last 5 years as host will pay him about $25 million a year.

god. damn.

"Leno acknowledged last night that he and NBC were anxious to keep O'Brien, who had been wooed by ABC, Fox and CBS in past negotiations.

"Conan is the hottest late-night guy out there," Leno said.

"I don't want to see him go anywhere else." "

I just heard this news a couple hours ago from my dad, (not sure where he heard it) and I felt two things, I am more than happy for Conan, this is awsome for him, no one diserves it more than he. Conan>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>All others.

But I also really fear what this'll do to his show. Tieing Conan's hands is not a good idea, I hope NBC doesnt do it too badly...

And what exactly is the deal with Leno and Letterman, I know a bit, I know Letterman wanted it. but was he that mad that he didnt?

Letterman was to Carson as what Conan is to Leno at the moment, and it was supposed to happen like what Leno is doing for Conan, but something went wrong. Leno's manager at the time was a cold hearted bitch that basically screwed over Letterman (through sometimes dubious actions) and gave Leno the show. Letterman never forgave Leno for the backstabbing, and moved on to CBS.

You also have to understand the cultural signifigance of The Tonight Show. Its the original, the one. No matter how bad it is, its still The Tonight Show. It launched modern stand up, where most all of the comedians jumped into stardom.

Like most others in the thread, this news leaves me with wary happiness. Can Conan act the same way at 11:30? And would he be playing to The Tonight Show demographic, or would his traditional audience take over?

It doesn't really matter anyway, because sometime soon our country will be torn apart by civil war, making things like late night television utterly trivial and marginalized </john titor>.

Of course, Conan's audience has been growing older since he debuted in '93. By the time he takes over the Tonight show in 2009, the twenty-somethings who watched his show at the beginning will be in their late thirties to early forties.

I think most of us, whether we can agree on Letterman vs.Kimmel vs. Conan vs. Stewart (if he counts) vs. whoever else, can agree that whatever it takes to get Leno off the fucking air is good enough.

Can't we all just get along this once?

The Controversy With Leno-Letterman

Pretty interesting articles about the whole 'controversy'. The writer likes Leno, but he's not anti-Letterman, so if you're interested in seeing story/history behind the battle of the 90's, they're great articles to read.

As for when Letterman retires, I don't know, but I hope he does it before he really goes into decline. Let's face it, even now, it seems like he isn't necessarily interested in his own show at times. Admittedly I didn't watch im during the 80's, so I don't know what/if his peak was, but somehow I don't think he's at his best today. But he's funny more often than not, and that's the best you can ask of a comedian.

I was looking at the credits of the Tonight Show. Look at the two dozen writers! Heck, I wonder if Leno and Letterman ever contribute a joke to their own routines. :p They certainly don't have to with that many writers.

Erm, Monday's are always repeats as Conan does a 4 day 'live' show from Tuesday to Friday. I guess this will change once he starts hosting the Tonight Show.

He does work on Mondays (to do his comedy bits like talking to people on the streets, etc etc)

He's been doing that ever since I started watching him on a consistant basis. I think since 1999 at least. Heheh.

I don't know. Conan was under a lot of pressure with The Late Show early on, and many didn't think he would make it. I think he can do this. Selling out to some of his fans is inevitable, but he's still going to be the same guy. I just hope he doesn't adopt The Tonight Show's writers.

i hope this means the show comes to New York. conan cant become LA SCUM.

Joe, you know as well as I do, that there is no way NBC is gonna move its top rated, longest running show to NY! I mean as much as I like Letterman, you know there are guests who never do his show because its in NYC, and they feel its a hassel. I think he is gonna go to LA, and I also know that they are going to make him tone down his comedy because it would offend the old people who watch the tonight show.

Although as his first guest in 2009, I would love to see Pimpbot 3000

I heard on TV today that it's pretty much assumed that Conan will move to LA in 2009 and that Max Weinberg and the band will go with him.

Hurray for Conan, but I hope this doesn't mean his absurd humor style will be dumbed down for the Tonight Show's demographic.

Hurray for Conan but that was my exact thoughts. BTW, I didn't get the memo about the Maf avatars. WTF?
