LittleBigAgendas: Why didn't the mass market overlook LBP?

I'm more than definite that MS has some PR people running around GAF and other forums to try to 'take down' Sony in any way possible.
Cowgirl is one of these people. Her (his more likely) post history in this thread is just awful.

I'm sure this has been stated, but just in case: the obvious answer is that the mass market overlooked LBP because it has also overlooked the PS3.

None of the current gen consoles are overlooked, 20m PS3's, 27m 360's, and a billion Wii's. The first two just pale in comparison that's all.

Someone double check my numbers, might be confusing them with others.

I bought LPB a week or so ago and finally played it last night for only about an hour or two. I love the presentation but I wasn't impressed with the platforming, the first couple of levels where boring and lifeless. Then the game started growing on me, I really started to enjoy the platforming, it seemed very shallow at first but the more I played the more I enjoyed it. Although I'm concerned by the lack of interesting enemies and lack of some sort of projectile (eg: fireballs in mario). Do these appear later in the game or in user maps?

i got bored of LBP to the point of wanting to trade it in.

before making that decision though, i decided to really give it the time it deserved and go back a few times to dive into some of the user-created levels online.

i'd checked some out before but having the 'user levels' thread really helped find some good ones. some were great, some were fairly boring, some were nice experiments, but overall the very fact that people could create all these varied levels with the same tools that are available to every LBP owner really impressed me; and i'll gladly (albeit sheepishly) go back on my word and say that it finally 'clicked'. i'll probably pick up the DLC for projectile stuff. (is this how to get it?)

the 'most hearted' and top levels search filters made it really easy to find some great stuff, and though my patience and attention span are terrible, it even motivated me to want to try create my own levels.

Have you tried searching for "Pulling under", "Abysmal failure" or "going third party" yet?

Not necessary man, unless the same people start problems again. Their silence is their defeat.

This is my reply from that thread:

Sony seems very confident in it, why would they waste money on a bundle and marketing if it's going to pull a Too Human?

It will sell 1-2 million in a year. If it does well and the user created market takes off along with official DLC it will sell many PS3 for years to come.

Most replies are in the 0.5-2million range WW in a year, hardly anyone was expecting big numbers.

Alright, let's have some fun...

1. This generation's GTA/Pokemon.
2. Upper Echelon games (Zelda, Gears, FF, Metal Gear, ~5 million)
3. Medium level success (1-2 mllion)
4. Enough to make a profit (500k-1 mil)
5. La bomba (<200k)

I don't see anyone outside of messege board people buying it. It's gonna have Zack & Wiki type "success."

Some gaming enthusiasts are excited about it on some video game websites. A hit this does not make...especially when Sony seems to be trying to position this much at the Carnival Games crowd ("what is internet?")

I just dont see the mass market appeal of a 2D platformer that doesnt have Mario on the box. Thats how it will come across when a casual picks up the box and see's the screenshots on the back.

Well, on the plus side, at least I made out like a bandit, being the only guy in that thread that didn't make a prediction.

Even more interesting is that this isn't shipped numbers or even sold numbers. This is the number of PSN accounts that have played the game online.

Variety:

-More than 1.3 million "unique users" have played "LittleBigPlanet." Note that this is not the same as Sony saying it has sold 1.3 million units of the game. There are more than 300,000 user-created levels already. It would take two straight years, non-stop, to play them all.

I think they pointed that out specifically because sites like GameSpot have translated that figure as meaning 1.3 million copies sold.

VentureBeat.com:

Still, Hirai said it has added 2.1 million accounts in the last couple of months. He’s showing off a PS 3 exclusive game from November, LittleBigPlanet, and is praising its appeal to the mass market. It’s being played online now by 1.3 million people. There are now 300,000 levels available, thanks to user-generated content for this game. That’s pretty impressive

IGN:

9:44: Hirai talks PSN. 17 million registered accounts all over the world. 2.1 million new accounts in the last month. Talks about LittleBigPlanet as great example of Sony's PSN flexibility in motion. Says 1.3 million people playing LBP. 300,000 levels online Brief demo.

Unless every LBP owner has a PSN account, we can assume that the game has actually sold well above 1.3 million overall.

Despite trying to say the game was going to bomb, ironically enough hydragonwarrior seems almost right. Viva Pinata broke 1 million copies and 1 million + 200k is almost 1.3 million. :lol

Oh haters...

I don't understand. Do you realize that LBP has been out for maybe 3 months?

And Viva Pinata for how long?

The intelligence on this forum takes my breath away.

If 1.3 million is worldwide sale, it's nothing to brag about. It's so easy to break 1 million these days in the globalizing market. Even Game Party on the Wii sold more than 1 million, and LBP was the biggest game for the PS3 last holiday season with insane amount of marketing push.

Yeah, if it's so easy, then why do so few games do it in their first 3 months?

In the U.S. it seemed like there was very little marketing coming from Sony.

I want to make incredible platform levels. But I know mine would be mediocre. What a to-do.

You aren't being rational about this. Since when is 1 million in sales done by everyone everywhere because its "so easy" to do?
(Particularly in a short time frame?)

LBP still has been marketed poorly. regardless of where sales are.

it could have sold 50% more AND moved systems, had they put some real money into marketing it.

From a UK perspective, in answer to the thread title: Because retailers have taken a £20 bath just to get it the fuck out of their inventory.

I've never seen such a high profile game thrown in the bargain bin so quickly.

Really? If this was the majority case where retailers were taking a bath...
then, logically, they wouldn't re-stock inventory for the game as it was a loss leading product.

So are you saying it was total failure and it won't be sold any more?

I saw plenty of games get discounted in the UK

That argument doesnt hold much weight since LBP was up there in the value charts as well for most of December.

I realize it was discounted, but not the "bargain bin trash pile" some believe.

Finally finished the ninja training level without dying, SO HARD. I wuv diz game, glad it's selling well.

You kidding?

Fallout 3, Fable 2 and others were discounted in a similar fashion before Xmas. LBP was discounted temporarily in some stores, and those titles, among others, were too.

I'm in Ireland, and going into Game this week, LBP seems to be one of the few higher profile games NOT discounted currently. They've slashed prices, to various degrees, on Gears 2, Mirror's Edge (like, 21 euro now), Fallout 3, Far Cry 2, Fable 2..but LBP right now (and since well before xmas) is still 59.99 there.

VP hit half a million after a year. 1 million much later. So I don't think hydragonwarrior will be anywhere near 'almost right' in the heel of the hunt if LBP's done ~1m in 2 months.

Anyway, looking at Oblivion's thread, the first couple of pages at any rate, 3 seemed to be a popular choice. So judging by that I think 'most' sales expectations here will be met if not perhaps even exceeded over the game's lifetime.

Funny you mention that - in Korea, LBP is currently selling at online retailers for more then double its launch price. I haven't seen anything like it with a console title before (vast majority drop price few weeks after launch, especially online).

Nov/Dec where tons of LBP ads in TV (germany).. and not only one. Like 5 different vids. More than i saw of uncharted, MG4 and resistance2 together in german TV.
