LittleBigPlanet 2 Review thread

I agree with all of this.

I've been playing platformers as one of my favorite genres for the better part of 30 years now, and IMO, LBP's controls aren't bad at all. I had no issue with running, jumping or direction change at all. The only "issue" I had was adapting to going "in and out" of the 2.5D environment reliably, but I figured it out and adapted to that pretty quickly.

I don't know if its a "it's not like Mario" thing with some players or not, but I know I had no issue with the way Sackboy jumps.

Your problem with finding the great levels was my greatest problem as well. Thankfully, NeoGAF came to the rescue with the LBP levels thread, but there really should be some better way of finding the quality levels in game. Hopefully, this will be addressed once and for all with LBP2, otherwise, I'm depending on GAF to tell me about the great levels again.

The only other issue I had with LBP was that there was no real goal or whatever to the single-player. You don't need much with a platformer, but you need something. Sounds like LBP2 has that now.
Same here. It's my most favourite genre as well. The very first game that I got into when I was a kid was a platformer. When I first played LBP, I thought it was the most funnest game ever, especially in co-op. LBP's controls aren't really that bad or frustrating, Hell, I know a 10 year old kid who got the play trophy (ace-ing every level without dying)! If a kid can play the game and enjoy it enough to go for play trophy then I think everyone can, if they an get over the idea that all platformers have to play the same way or a certain way.

I think what it comes down to is that LBP is such a great game that any little flaw/difficulty gets magnified.

Is that the plushie that comes with CE's? I hope not. The other one looks bigger.

Anyway, put your playthrough up on Justin.tv please.:D

I don't have a capture card, so I cannot stream. I am doing a multi-part journal style review, though, so I'll post daily impressions here as well.

That plushie is probably the one that comes with the american CE. Can't wait to get my hands on it! :)

NOOOOOOO!!! :( The plushie looked so much bigger in the CE shots (like something you could put on your bed). Also the face/mouth/eyes looked different ( I know alot of people where complaining in that thread about the eyes on the CE sackboy so this is good for them I guess).

Also, if review copies are being sent out does that mean Jim has one by now? I hope not as we were supposed to play the campaign together like we did with LBP1.

I can't believe EU isn't getting that CE and the US cover is better too :(
At least we got a decent Sackboy render on the cover this time instead of that fucking golem that was on the LBP1 box.

Just played through the first set of levels and the first stage of the second set.

I'm really liking the game so far. I'm definitely liking the Grabinator more than the hook.

I think it's interesting that I ranked 5th overall on the boss battle stage and 4th overall on the first stage of the second set of levels. I guess not that many people have played through the game thus far, in spite of the good amount of reviews already out there.

I tried to play one of Jump_Button's levels (Black & White Planet 3, I think) as it was one of the featured "Mm Picks" stages, but it wouldn't load. In fact, I have yet to get a user created level to load, at this point.

I'm not really ready to elaborate on the experience yet, but I'm enjoying myself. It definitely feels more grand than the first game.

Loving that positivity Shurs. :) I know it's going to be a game I'm going to enjoy, but it's just nice to hear someone have an enjoyable experience with it. So awesome that they gave you a plushie as well. Those things look so cool, and I can't wait to get my CE so I can display my plushie.

LOL @ review copy goodies. I know this isn't new or anything (and I know other companies have given away much crazier stuff) but it's still pretty shameful.

I had planned on giving the game an 8, but that plush Sackboy has pushed the game into 9 or 10 territory.

That level is from LBP1 and if you did go on it will not work I use a lighting trick that LBP2 dont have so all you would see is a black screen.

Mm put some LBP2 Beta levels on LBP server for reviews look up MMolecule_Studio LBP.me link http://lbp.me/u/MMolecule_Studio

It wouldn't load the level at all, is what I was saying.

Thanks for the the link.

GamesRadar - 10

Adding so much as to be a little intimidating at first, LBP2 brings a slew of impressive new creator features, while still offering plenty of cool new things for those who just want to play. The basic, flawed platforming of the original is still there, but compared to the possibilities LBP2 opens up, it’s insignificant.

The dissolving jelly effect in this game is the technical highlight of the generation. Holy crap looks so real.

I finished the Story Mode.

Apparently, I'm one of 13 people to have done so thus far, though it's possible Leaderboards are only for people playing single player.

I really liked it.

What I appreciated most about the Story Mode is there is a greater feeling of cohesion than in the first game both in story and in gameplay.

Each new set of stages introduces a new mechanic or powerup making you feel like you are actually progressing rather than just playing some random stages.

The game feels like a love letter to the fans of the original.

If anyone wants to know more about the game:

Ask me anything.

Someone asked about screen-tearing in the other LBP2 thread. Now my review's out I can safely say that I've seen one tiny bit during a boss battle, for a couple of frames.

Unless I'm missing anything, LBP2 doesn't suffer from tearing at all, pretty much.
That was me, thank you, and thank god for that! Seeing as my only concern have been cleared out, I'll be there day 1.

Were the story levels of the Demo and Beta included in the final release? I don't mind the idea of levels introducing new mechanics but those were too basic and lacking any of the familiar creativity of the team. I'm hoping they didn't take up any story level slots, honestly.

Edit: herp. Sorry for the dp.

Not sure about the beta or demo levels.

I was in the beta, but I was pretty disappointed with the first level, which was a Score Attack (Da Vinci) level using the grappling hook. I played all of the "main" story missions but haven't gone back in and played the side missions.

It's probably in there.

Tower Of Whoop?

The beta level? Sounds about right, it was basically using the grappling hook to ascend a tower, collecting point bubbles along the way.

It was terrible. Very off-putting for me. I remember I immediately hopped into the beta thread to complain about it.

Thankfully the Story Mode is much better than that level.

The grappling hook is also probably my least favorite accessory in the game.

I never quite got comfortable with it.

Edit: Yep, Tower of Whoop is in the final game. Just checked.

How many standard platforming levels are there, opposed to the levels with new type of gameplay?

Is there a RTS level in the story mode which was previously shown in the previews?

Maybe we should talk sometime.

Stampy said:

Nearly all of the main story levels are what I would consider "standard" platforming levels, though most of them mix in a new mechanic (sackbots) or accessory (grabinator,etc.).

There are four non-boss fight stages per world, six worlds in total. Out of those, only three or four are what I'd call non-platforming levels.

Stampy said:

There are no RTS levels among the main story levels.

I'm still unable to connect to any user-created levels at this time. I just get an infinite "loading" message when trying to access each individual level.

I sure would vote for Jump-Button doing the OT.

I would really like to see banners and an headers from you because you're simply a talented artist.

Just to confirm... is the jumping feel the same as in the demo and LBP1? Or do the story levels switch up the basic Sackboy feel; if so, how much?

Is there any super-frustrating part like the Wheel Of Death in the Bunker in LBP1?

Are checkpoints in story mode usually infinite-lives or limited-lives? Is the story mode more or less frustrating in the later levels than LBP1's later levels?

How friendly is the story mode to more casual players (wife/girlfriend type people)?

1 - The feel of Sackboy's jumping remains the same as the first game. The nice thing is the Mm levels are designed in a way to accommodate the jumping mechanic.

2 - I got frustrated with the final boss before realizing that I was an idiot and was "playing it wrong." There is nothing as frustrating as the Wheel Of Death, which, coincidentally, is where I gave up on the original LittleBigPlanet.

3 - The early (Da Vinci) levels have infinite lives, the other levels do not. The game is not frustrating at all. There were a few levels I had to retry but those were rare.

4 - It should be fine for causal players.
