Lobb talks Revolution (again)

New interview, now from IGN.

IGN: What do you think of Nintendo's Revolution?

Lobb: I really don't know much about the Revolution. There's been some rumor about networking directly between consoles and maybe tilt functionality or something, but beyond that I really don't know much about the Revolution. I'm sure that Nintendo, as always, will try to do something that's innovative. For them, lately, I mean I love Nintendo, I'm a big fan of their games, but sometimes innovation can be borderline not necessarily what I want to play.

I like games that are interesting and new. Katamari Damacy [for PS2], I was really excited it won a lot of [awards at DICE], it's a great game and I have a lot of respect for the people at Namco. But to me, that's a genre-like thing. I want to be able to play different genres on a console that also plays all the games that I'm familiar with [and play] with a control scheme that I'm used to.

And again, just the way online has invaded my life and what I want to play on a daily basis, I also think that that's an area where the Revolution -- I'm not sure if [Nintendo] is going to go after it.

Some other stuff about Rare, Sony and the future of Xbox Live.

Not again Nintendo! Every bit of vague speculation I hear is making me want this system less and less. I have no idea what's going on with the Revolution, but I can tell it's not good.

I'm sure plenty of people will give long detailed analysis of Nintendo's sales, future outlook, and other such things.

At this point, I think this is what the third or so thread recently that's addressed whatever details and rumors surround the coming Revolution. I'm content to sit and wait for the pudding that contains proof and such in it.

is there any chance that he actually knows something? or is he just going on the same net rumours we have? he's probably just talking about the rumours on the net...

I might be frightened by the though of what the Revolution is gonna be .... But at least that's something 'cause a lot of us don't even give a shit about what xenon or ps3 are bringing...

Umm, you really shouldn't pay much attention to what a Microsoft employee thinks about the competition's system. I don't really think he knows too much about the Revolution.

Wait for E3, see the unveiling, see the specs, see where Nintendo is going with the Revolution and then form your own opinion. Trust me, you'll enjoy gaming much more if you just focus on what you think/feel and leave the politics/popularity contests aside.

Every other day I see huge threads on Revolution with no new information. Why?

yeah, the revolution is generating a strangley perverse/morbid hype. i would say there is more interest in the revolution, at least in the online community, than the other two consoles.

Man I just know they're gonna screw some of the bread and butter up. Like making a controller that only 49.9% of the GC population likes. I'm thinking like making all the buttons touch sensitive, a iPods wheel. Won't work with sweaty fingers, people with too big hands or fingers will get problems etc. I'm just theorising here, but we do know they're doing something funky with the buttons.

Maybe because we all know that the Xbox2 and PS3 are bringing the same games with massively improved graphics. While the Revolution talk keeps focusing on the "paradigm shift" mantra.

I think that alot of posters are interested because they see this as quite possibly the final step to getting Nintendo titles on their respective consoles.

I thought it was pretty clear that I was being sarcastic.

The fact he worked at nintendo for years means his opinion holds more weight than any fanboy on this forum. Sure he's sold out, gone to the dark side etc but at least he has been there and done that and speaks from experience.

Lobb deserves respect, he is not some pompus arrogant fool.

Lobb worked under a different regime during his tenure. The old guard is gone, and this really is a "new" Nintendo. I'm sure that Iwata has spilled the beans to Ken Lobb about his plans for the Revolution.

He's not a fool, for sure, but you're crazy if you think that he wouldn't try to downplay anything the competition does. Microsoft is paying his bills now, and I'm sure he doesn't want to say anything that's going to get himself in hot water. Besides, he states that he really doesn't know too much about the Rev, so this is a moot point.

Now, if he'd just hurry up and get Conker in my hands...

definitly, thats the reason, but it's mostly negative expectation thats driving the hype... i don't think thats nessecarily a bad thing though... whatever it is, it will probably end up surpassing those expectations and people will be saying " thats not so bad. at least it's not a blow up mario sex toy with connectivity and a vibrating plastic ninja sword" or whatever bizzare contraption they may have feared. . also, hype is good, regardless of it's source. i'm personaly on pins and needles waiting to find out the secret. i'm expecting something legitimate to leak any day now :P

I'll have to agree with Ryudo, here. Lobb had some very nice things to say about Nintendo in the interview, he didn't seem to spew criticism as a generic PR machine.

IGN: Do you think Nintendo is afraid to compete directly against Microsoft and Sony?

Lobb: I don't think Nintendo doesn't go after Sony and Microsoft because they're afraid or because they think they can't compete directly in this space, whether its online or a more traditional-style game or with licenses, etc. I think they always want to do something different and again, I'll always respect them for that. The market is filled with a lot of Me2 stuff and I am happy that they're out there giving it a go. As a console fan, I get concerned, [about what] that means for some of my favorite Nintendo IPs.

Don't get me wrong. I like Ken Lobb, always have. It's just that at this point in time there really isn't too much to talk about as all the companies are keeping their cards close to their chests. I'm sure that when the hands are revealed, he will stand behind his company. That is to be expected, and can't really be held against him.

I give props to him for his honesty. He took some flack for his comment about RE4, but I can see why he prefers to play online games. I respect that.

I hope i didnt seem like i was being shitty at you, that wasnt my intention. I just find Ken to be one of the most honest people when it comes to games.

Actually, if he thought about what he just said, playing Katamari with a tilt sensor controller would be pretty damn rad.

I can't really see why; I mean (and I'm basing this off of the various interviews he's done while working for MS), sometimes the guy sounds like he'd rather just set aside the top ten scored PS2 and Gamecube titles in favor of Xbox Live, some Rare titles, and a 2D fighter. It would sort of be like a Sony rep being absolutely convinced that MMORPGs are the forefront of gaming. I do have reason to respect him professionally though (long story), and without a difference of opinion there would be a lot of good games that just never made it to market. Kind of odd for a man in that position to be sticking to that line, but whatever.

But is he complaining about Katamari not controlling like Brute Force or something? He sort of makes a collection of comments that don't quite seem to fit together there.
