How expensive are accomodations near Grant Park?
Chicago is relatively cheap. They have the travel packages you might consider, but really, as long as you get a hotel somewhat near the L or even by a bus, it's very easy to get downtown. There's a Holiday Inn near where I live (South Loop, this is about 1.5 miles west of Grant Park) that I recall being about $150 a night list price when we were looking for family. I'd imagine if you went through a Travelocity, etc., it would be much cheaper.

Arcade Fire and Phoenix are great, but I'm feeling very meh about the rest of the headliners. I'll see Lady Gaga, but only if she's not playing opposite of Arcade Fire or Phoenix. Still doesn't touch 2008's headliners, or even 2007 for that matter.

The bands who play Pitchfork last year usually graduate to Lollapalooza the following year. These are the bands that I'm more interested in.

X Japan
Yeasayer
The xx
Dirty Projectors
Cut Copy
Hot Chip
Phoenix
Hockey
Flaming Lips
Matt & Kim

Funny that Hockey is on the bill again, probably because last year the power went out during their set. They only played one or two full songs. If Flaming Lips play, they better be at one of the bigger stages, during the evening. Their show wouldn't work as well during the day.

Looking forward to another Chicago summer filled with music! :D

Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Green Day?

Just like 15 years ago when music was good.

Don't start that crap. Maybe when these bands were on MTV, good music was more mainstream, but there's a lot of amazing bands and musicians out there. You just have to dig a little deeper.

Shit yeah! I cannot fucking wait. Although, I must admit, it's going to be pretty difficult for them to trump last year's lineup.

April 6th can't come soon enough.

I must be getting old. I don't care about anything there except for Pearl Jam and Soundgarden. Even then, I only really like their first albums. Maybe pearls jam's second as well.

I can't stand Gaga.

Soundgarden, Green Day, and Lady Gaga fit the first 3 bands in the line-up guesses.
Yeah, the 6 headliners have been known since February due to 'industry sources.' People weren't sure if Phoenix would be a headliner or sub but the list confirms they must be a headliner.

I'd say there is 0% chance PJ wouldn't headline so that rumor is almost certainly debunked. I don't see where the Flips would fit into the released list with O's either, so I'm thinking they likely are out as well.

Strokes are back, and rumor is that they are working on a new album.
It's not really a rumor. Julian has said to expect the album in September.

These headliners are a little disappointing personally. I love The Strokes but Phoenix does not deserve that billing. I actually have a room booked already, the walk back to my apartment was too long last year. Got a room at the Travelodge on Harrison. Got it for $120 a night and it's quite possibly the best location possible.

Bands I want that look like they might fit: Spoon, The Black Keys, Beck (I know this isn't very likely), Devo, MGMT, Gogol Bordello

Think you're really underestimating Phoenix's ability to draw in the States right now. They're probably more popular than the Strokes at the moment among people under 25.

Strokes are unknown to most kids nowadays.

The Strokes were credited with popularizing that style of rock in the 90's............everyone forgets about them

I am going to fly all the way from NZ just to see Soundgarden.

X Japan is a nice bonus but without Hide......

He's been gone for awhile. X fans act like its the end of the world that someone else is taking his place. He wasn't even the primary songwriter.

I can't wait to see X Japan's timeslot. There was a guy at the music forum I go to "arguing" about how anyone thinking X Japan would get more than a 20 minute timeslot at noon was deluding themselves. He of course was posting this as someone complete uninformed about the Lollapalooza setup. And I quote argue only because no one had claimed otherwise when he started talking about all these delusional fans.

Why didn't you make a thread months ago so I had enough time to buy tickets? I don't follow music news.

They're in the 20s so they'll probably end up playing for an hour around 3:00 in the afternoon or thereabouts I'm guessing.

To see X Japan would be amazing. I'd be satisfied with one song (Silent Jealousy or Kurenai). I just don't understand comments like, "Ohhh, I don't know.. I mean, without Hide.." Fuck that noise. He'll be missed, but it's been YEARS. It's about time the rest of the band decided that it's time to move on and just get another guitarist.

So which bands are worth seeing if I go? I want to see MGMT for sure, Gaga too. I see allot for Japan X also here.

It will be interesting to see the type of people who attend the day Lady Gaga is playing. Compared to the rest of the lineup, she's totally out of place. :lol I'd like to see a mosh pit at her set, I'm not sure her type of crowd could handle it. :lol

Besides Arcade Fire, the rest of the headliners are kinda meh this year. It's all about the rest of the lineup, there are some amazing bands playing this year, some for the first time at Lolla. I just hope the schedule isn't messed up and two bands I want to see end up playing at the same time. Always seems to work out that way though. :/

Looking forward to...

Arcade Fire
Phoenix
MGMT
Hot Chip
The Black Keys
The National
Spoon
Cut Copy
The New Pornographers
Erykah Badu
Grizzly Bear
Chromeo
Gogol Bordello
Yeasayer
Matt & Kim
The xx
Fuck Buttons
The Walkmen
Wild Beasts
Cymbals Eat Guitars
The Dodos
The Anlters
Wavves
HEALTH
The Morning Benders
Digitalism
Felix Da Housecat
Flosstradamus

This. A friend of mine is friends with Matt & Kim, they're good people. Hung out with them at some Fight Club looking place last year for a party, it was odd. Haha

It's an incredibly top heavy line-up that really lacks much in the way of bands I'm interested in early in the day. I could see myself showing up at 4 or 5 each day based off the lower tier list. I'm excited about a bunch of the headliners but there's a general lack of bands I'm excited to see on the lineup. Glad I got a golden ticket -- $60 is less than I would have paid to see Gaga.

I have my P4k 3-day passes as well so I'm set.

I was pissed they did the $60 2010 tickets last year, missed out.

Anyway, I feel the exact opposite. The headlines are a snooze to me, with the exception of Arcade Fire and Phoenix. Not that I wouldn't mind seeing a few of them, but a lot of the bands I listen to on a regular basis are on the lower tier list.

This is really Pitchfork 2008/2009 with some headliners thrown in.

Comparing the two, I hardly know any of the bands at Pitchfork, perhaps that's my own blessed ignorance :)
