Lord of the Rings: War in the North |OT| Not just another LotR game

What about the many other elf characters in the movie that used swords and not bows? Or that one elf character in the movie who was more of a witch than a fighter of any kind?

That one elf character? the one no one remembers? I,ll tell you what I remember, Legolous getting 10 head shots in that one scene, in that forest battle at the end of the first movie .That's cool, that's what they should have done for the elf character.I hope they are planning a character DLC pack.

Yeah, I'm sure no one remembers her..

Ok, fine so she is an elf but she should be portrayed as one of the elves in the movies. She should use a bow, run around with super agility and stealth, have blades similar to legolous.Imagine Natalie Portmans character from the movie your highness but she,s an elf.Elves have to have super fast firing accurate bow,s like in the movies as standard.
Sounds like a you want her to be a female elf version of Eradan.

Ok, so she was a big character, but it goes back to my first point. You didn't watch the movie and go,dam, when they make a video game about this I want to play as the crazy witch elf chick that looses her shit at frodo when they standing by that bird bath thing.I just find nothing cool about the games wizard chick at all.I guess I'm just upset that there is no fast firing bow action like in the movies.

Any split screen impressions?
PS3: It's vertical and it doesn't seem to affect performance at all that I've noticed. There's a bug atm with unobstructive but mildly annoying text notifications getting stuck for an entire stage during splitscreen, that's about the only negative I can think of.

You could always go play the old hack-n-slashes that came out with the movies :)

I actually had a lot of fun with those, although I was hoping for something much better this time and WiTN fits that bill perfectly. For an uber LOTR nerd its nice to play in another setting than strictly the critical path from the Shire to Mordor. The main character of LOTR isn't Frodo or Sam or Aragorn or Gandalf, but the landscape and history of Middle Earth itself, so going off the beaten path into other areas of that map we all know so well seals the deal for me.

It also helps that my Dwarf looks like a bad-ass right now. Loot FTW.

It does make sense for the elf to be a cleric rather than a ranger, because they're the most magically aligned race in the original lore. That doesn't really come across in the films as much because the main elven characters are Legolas and Aiowyn, both of whom are more rough and tumble elves, but in general they are known for magic and mystical skills.

What happened to get that guy banned? lol

It's Drinky. Up is down, black is white and nothing is what it seems...

They took some liberties with that in the movies too so it makes them look like rangers more. You can tell who only watched the movies. :p

This is $50 on the US store for GMG right? Are there any discounts that can still be used with it?

Edit: Fuck, I need steam in order to play it. Looks like I'm passing for now.

It's $43.39 right now on GMG (in the US at least, idk if it differs elsewhere). It seems the additional 10% off code that works a few days ago is already expired however.

Probably asked a million times, but any chance of a demo? I can't really risk throwing down 60 bucks on a loot game when so, so many have failed in the past.

Loot is definitely NOT an issue with this game.

There is not a console demo, however you can play the first 30 minutes of the game for free at www.onlive.com :)

I know that it's not the same as a full manual book, but we do have more comprehensive manuals and FAQs in the Support section of the site:
http://www.warinthenorth.com/index.php/the-game/support

The printable manual clocks in at 45 pages end to end.
After reading through the 45 page PC manual I learned that you can rearrange your items by holding down RT or clicking and dragging them with the LMB.

Also, page 10 and 11 showing the 360 controller button layout should have been included as a picture in the options menu - like there is on the console versions. It took me ~15 minutes or so before I could figure out what the controls for everything are when using a 360 controller on the PC version.

The 360 day 1 patch was just minor bugs.

I asked because the OnLive sku had some other issues specific to OnLive streaming which they patched separately from the other skus.

Well, I'm not sure that Onlive demo would sell anybody on the game that isn't a dedicated PC gamer. The streaming and subsequent texture and input issues really make it look and feel like shovelware...which is totally unfair. In the spots where the streaming was solid enough, the real game shone through. I did have to check out some screenshots to ensure the visuals weren't as bad as Onlive made it seem. Not the game's fault, for sure.

Got to say I'm a little pissed I bought Space Marine today. Should've bought this instead. Definitely scratches that loot game feel, and the mythology seems to give a nod to the movies, but seems to feel based more in the books...which as a LOTR nerd of old makes me happy.

Couple of things I noticed is the inability to compare loot, the merchant was invisible (or just non-existent) and the text on the subtitles jumped ahead several lines. Also, potions...did they have a hotkey? 30 minutes with some dialogue rabbit trails and cutscene ogling left not too much time for actual gameplay...I probably just missed that.

Other than that, seems like a pretty nice game, especially considering it's a new LOTR game.

Does anyone know if this is playable with the Mad Catz Streetfighter control pads? Only have two controllers and one of them is the digital-only mad catz and my girlfriend wants to play this with me. My game is still in the shrinkwrap and I might return it if I would need to buy another controller to play 2-player.

The game uses both analogs and the d-pad. The Mad Catz fightpads have a thing to switch the d-pad between those 3 so it's possible to use one, but it would annoying. Left analog = movement, Right = Camera and d-pad = Health / Power potion hotkeys as well as team commands.

Game finally arrived today. And I'm digging it.

Finished the 1st chapter, and that Tharzog fight is as tough as people have said, must have died 10-15 times until I figured out the trick, the dodge button is crucial to winning this fight, without it is virtually impossible.

I have had an issue numerous times now when playing online co-op, with one other person, on the PC version. Randomly when coming back to an area that we left using a teleport point the second player would appear back at the start of the area and be forced to quit the game and rejoin in order to continue. If they attempted to go through the stage to where the teleport point is, they would get stuck behind a checkpoint and unable to pass it because P1 isn't there with them. Also, whenever this happens all the loot from that area reappears for them.

Had this glitch pop up again on me just now while playing with a fellow GAFer.

So this is the Tharzog battle http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/rpg...-tharzog-lotr-war-in-the-north-gameplay-video I didn't know who Tharzog was, thought it was some later boss. I beat that dude on my first try. Yeah, all you have to do is learn to use dodge, which is a maneuver you'll be relying on heavily as the game gets more difficult (like all the time versus the bigger enemies).

Just beat it, clocked in at 22 hours. Awesome game. The framerate issues in the last level are horrendous and some of the worst I've ever experienced. Everything indoors is so bad I can't begin to describe...the caves and inside the last level. This is a case of very poor optimization because people with i7's and monster GPUs still get these enormous drops at specific levels (indoors, caves, etc.). Other than that the game was great.

Dont get me wrong those old hack and slash games were a ton of fun.I felt they captured the movies perfectly. and this game looks really cool, if not PERFECT, its got the gore system that really looks cool and is a first for a LOTR games. The locations look amazing, graphics are sharp and it looks like middle earth. In fact the only fault I have with this game is the characters, and that's kind of a big fault.Like I said some DLC characters would be more than welcome. Not to say the characters they have are terrible by any means, they just needed to give you more choice. How many of you out there, and be honest, play the single player campaign as the wizard chick?

Playing this with my roommate and so far we're both enjoying it quite a bit. I was surprised at just how much time we got out of Fornost alone. Hopefully the other levels are just as long.

Can you tell me how many chapters it has?

I really enjoyed my time with this even though I was single player all the way. I would love to run through co-op but none of my asshole friends could be bothered to pick this up since COD is coming Tuesday. I can't really blame them and I feel sorry that Snowblind had to release a quality title in this month.

This game could have found an audience if it released in the summer months, but like always gamers will suffer because publishers decide to blow their wad in one quarter. Dumb.

Anyway, this game was definitely designed with co-op in mind. There were a few sections that gave me fits simply because the AI was absolutely no help. The Tharzog fight is child's play compared to having to kill two trolls later in the game before they destroy a large door (Those and escort missions can die in a fire BTW). I almost gave up on that section.

Everything else is aces. The combat is meaty and the combo system is really nice; It really feels like you are actually hitting sword to flesh and everything has a nice weight to it. The loot is pretty good although a lot of the stuff I bought in Rivendell was better than most of the stuff I picked up later in the game. I was most surprised at the story and voice acting. It uses a Mass Effect style dialogue system (every game should use this) and it works really nicely. There are lots of extra encounters with characters from the books if you go out of your way to find them.

Warner, give me a sequel (yeah right) and try not to release in the dumbest timeframe possible. Try July, there is usually nothing but shit there.

I picked this up yesterday on PS3, having fun so far. I loved the shit out of the Champions of Norrath & Baldur's Gate games on PS2, but I always wished that you could go into a 3rd person view, and this pretty much fits that bill. It's definitely better than Dungeon Siege 3, since you can take your own character into online games. I wish that the Elf was a little more offense focused and that her skill tree was a little more robust, but I'm getting used to playing her. Really glad I swapped my Goldeneye (meh) for this.

SnowblindTina, can you tell your people at Snowblind to do whatever it takes to make a game just like this in the EverQuest universe? Hell, a World of Warcraft game would be sweet as well. I will name my next kid Snowblind Jackson if this happens, I swear to god.

I immediately started the New Game+ after finishing it... I rarely ever do that, but the loot is so addictive and the combat so satisfying that I can't help myself. I wanna keep leveling up and finding better stuff. 27 hours played now so I just spent 5 hours in NG+ Heroic difficulty. Can't wait to get to Legendary diff. I'm now level 26 (cap is 40). This game didn't deserve to bomb...one of my favs of the year.

I just started New Game Plus as well on Heroic but I only played a little bit of the opening chapter. Is the difficulty manageable so far??

Yeah, it's fair. I just got to Rivendell. One thing I've noticed that's broken is Sorceror's taking 70-90% of your health with one of their projectiles, but they're fairly easy to dodge and focus down.

Yeah, I noticed that as well when taking out the catapults on the beginning level. Also, one suicide goblin killed my entire party so I was concerned about other parts of the game being a total pain in the ass.

Made it to
the Gray Mountains.

Game's great. Anyone looking for a fun hack-and-slash with loot should definitely check this out. About 5 hours in and the combat has developed a surprising amount of depth thanks to the skills and different enemies.

Just bought this game on Steam, and so far I'm really surprised. I loved the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance games, and this game seems to do the same action-RPG thing even better. Also, it looks graphically very nice on PC, and the voice acting and music is really high quality (and there is a surprising amount of voice acting). Great game.

LOL -

Well, unfortunately since WoW is a license owned by Blizzard and EQ is a license owned by Sony (and we are a WB Studio), I don't see that happening in the near future...

That said... We are thrilled you're having a good time! :D

Do you get to visit all the locations marked on the map when it's zoomed out? I'm guessing no since I'm on the last chapter and haven't visited half the dots on the map. ]:
