The fact that Desmond (Mr. Electromagnetism) can see into the freaking AFTERLIFE indicates to me that the Purgatory we saw is connected to The Light/Electromagnetism/Jughead/whatever.

Yep this is the sermon I've been preaching as well. Good to have you on board. I explained it to a friend and he's like whoa that actually makes a fuckton of sense!

I guess this works, but I always kind of interpreted it as him momentarily dying when they zapped him, as opposed to the dude before him permanently dying.:lol

This was always how I interpreted it as well. Especially since mother referred to the light source as "life, death, and rebirth."

I hate this so much. That such a major plot point did nothing nor had to do with anything.

At the very least it shot them back into 2007. At the most, it has something to do with Purgatory.

It was "the incident", the reason why babies couldnt be born on the island, the reason the button had to be pushed every 108 minutes or the world would end.

Come again?

I meant in the 6th season.

Why does that matter though? Not every single plot point was important to the final season. Though it's the same story, each season has its own tone and themes, Jughead and the explanations it offered being one of them (for season 5). It isn't entirely significant to the final season but I'm not sure why that matters.

I guess the fact that it brought everyone back to the original timeline doesn't count?
Then why'd they even travel back in time in the first place? To blow up a bomb that will create an energy leak where Desmond will make explode 30 years later and get his electromagnetic power so he can unplug the island so they can kill the smoke monster? Everyone is completely satisfied with that?

They didn't travel back in time by choice :lol

LakeEarth said:
I didn't say they did. I was saying "what was the point".

Fair enough. But the way you typed up the explanation seemed to intentionally make the story sound silly, when plenty of great stories can be "summed up" in such a way that makes them sound ham-fisted.

Back on this again? Jughead created that purgatorial reality. To state otherwise is to ignore three seasons worth of evidence. Darlton sure went out of their way to fuck us with pointless red herring after pointless red herring if it didn't.

And yeah, seasons transition into different tones but they are all pretty much simpatico narratively.

There wasn't so much a "point" to it, it was just a plotline that they wanted to explore and a way to get the characters where they needed to be in the last season while offering a share of explanations, and beyond that time-travel is just one of the many intriguing aspects of the island so they wanted to include it with the main story.

I'm not sure if I would say that it was the bomb that created the purgatorial reality, but I would say that it was an enabler. I still think the afterlife was created for them by the island but hey that's my own personal spin.

That seems kind of important.

I would say the sideways world was a combination of the island's power and energy from the bomb, with that world's appearance being shaped by the Losties' desire to create a place where their plane never crashed.

I think it was BB who first said this, but I like the idea that the bomb was the catalyst for what allowed the island and the Losties to create the sideways world.

That sounds about right. I was just saying that I didn't think it was the bomb itself that created purgatory. Its energy plus the island's light-power were probably like FFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU and thus, afterlife bitches! I like how it was their intent to detonate the bomb to prevent the plane crash from ever happening but they could never get it through their skulls that whatever happened, happened-- but something good, great even still came out of it all regardless.

FUUUUUUU...

I'm so torn. I have seasons 1-5 on Blu Ray already, and they aren't selling for much at all (seriously, ebay had some auctions for like 40 bucks total for all 5...fuck that), so I don't know if I'll get the full box set or not.

Just buy it, it's basically an entire square foot of the island plus you get all the seasons.

why do you find it so expensive?

Cause it is.
I only have 2, 3, and 5 on standard DVD, but I'm going to take the hit.

I was.

:D

If the Losties didn't travel back in time to detonate Jughead at the Swan site, the Island would've been sunk/destroyed in 1977, which would've lead to many other horrible things.

They were unknowingly preserving their future existence. I'd say that's pretty significant.

USA gets this:

UK gets this:

That just includes the discs for each season. Nothing extra. :(

Not happy!

Not to mention:

US Version $195 (£125)

UK Version £270 ($423)

Play.com and Amazon have this crappy UK box for £134. Still, this thing is ridiculous. I was so looking forward to owning the special edition with all the included stuff!

Mmmmm....can't wait for the blu ray box set. I'm doing my best to hold off watching the show until it's out so I can do a full on re-watch in 1080p glory. I miss Lost, though, it hasn't been easy resisting it whenever I boot up Netflix.

I wish they kept the packaging from Season 1-4.. but instead Season 5 is this cardboard shit.. Two seasons left and they change the packaging.. boo!

Nope. It's the lamest thing. UK getting screwed over again :(
Hmm, according to Wikipedia the use of region locking is optional for content providers, and an estimated 70% of discs are region free. *crosses fingers* Does anyone know of a site that will ship this to the UK?

I think *some* seasons on BD are region free. I know Season 3 and 4 are not, but I seem to remember reading that the US releases of S1 and S2 (which came out later) are region free. If true, then there is a chance, although I wouldn't hold my breath, that the complete set might be region free.

Wow, well I'm surprised... my dad is officially addicted to Lost. This is the guy that is the typical Asian (specifically, from Pakistan) dad in that it's all about the studies and nothing else matters. He doesn't watch much TV (aside from the news and stuff) and not many movies. It's totally unlike him to be into a TV show this much.

I got him to watch Part 1 of the Pilot, and he said it was okay. The next day I told him to watch Part 2 and he was like "why do you want me to keep watching? are you trying to get me hooked on this?" He watched it, and the next few days we watched one episode at a time. A few days ago, it switched to two episodes. I wanted to start my series re-watch, so I figured this would be a good time to do that and get to watch it alongside my dad, though I expected him to quit after a few episodes.

So yesterday, we ended up watching three episodes (ending with "Hearts and Minds"). I go up to my room to do other stuff and a little while later I hear the familiar sound that plays on the LOST title screen, so I check downstairs and he's started another episode (this one being "Special"). For him, that was shocking to me. It's unlike him to just start watching episodes of a show without me, so I knew he was addicted at that point. But today... wow. I come back from work and he watched four episodes while I was gone (ending with "Numbers"). I ended up watching two episodes with him and then we ate dinner... only to watch two more. He watched EIGHT episodes today, which is so out of the ordinary for him.

So yea, I'm actually really shocked right now. Who knows how long this will last, but he is totally hooked. I expect he'll watch the season 1 finale while I'm at work tomorrow and we'll probably start season 2 tomorrow at this rate. Normally we don't have much that we like in common, so at least this will give us something to talk about.
