So I purchased Burnout Paradise earlier today, because I hadn't played many arcade racers this gen, and the demo had fairly good driving, one of my friends was purchasing it soon and I love open world racing games, and Burnout games. (Midnight Club 3 and Burnout 3 were my favorite racing games last gen).
And wow, was I utterly let down. So far, I have a Class C license, (almost at B now), and while the driving is definitely top-notch for arcade fans, and the open world is fairly varied, the rest of the game is just such a disappointment for me.
First, the big things, it's very, very repetituos (But PsychoWARD23, all racers are repititous!) and yes, I realize this, but from my memory there's about 5 events, and that's it. That's all you'll be doing. There's no special races where the cops try and come after you, there's no "special sequences" (A helicopter is chasing after you or something), it's just those 5 events. And the open world is honestly fairly small for a racing game, it does look very good graphically.
And no way to restart a race, or go back to the start of it after it's finished is insulting.
Also, no splitscreen in a racing game? Really? I don't care if it's 20 FPS, I want to race locally WITH my friends dammit.
And here come the smaller complaints, and boy are there a lot of them.
- The soundtrack is fairly bad
- No car customization (I don't care if that's always been in Burnout)
- No drivers/pedestrians
- Holy mother of god, that DJ
- There are no junkyards in the Westish area.
- Insulting Gilette Fusion product placement, as well as EA logos slapped over everything
- No pedestrians/drivers
- Terrible multiplayer "interface" that lets the host choose the cars for events
- No cockpit view, just a first-person view. And at that note, only one third person camera option, which is a bit too zoomed in for my tastes.
- When trying to access the main menu, I have to go through the Burnout Store first
- Tons upon tons of overpriced DLC
At least the gameplay is solid, otherwise this would be a much harsher impression. I still enjoy the game, it's just.... lacking in a lot of areas.
