Lttp: Burnout Paradise

One of my favorite racers ever, along with F-Zero GX and Super Mario Kart. In fact it's the only car racer I ever liked! Didn't do any events though, just went around looking for signs and fences to crash with the soundtrack set to classical only (brilliant move by Criterion). So addictive!

Any other games with a similar driving model? I tried Blur and the new Ridge Racer but the cars were slow and ponderous in comparison.

Some of the latter cars inUnbounded are actually really fast and handle great.

Apart from that, Split Second has a somewhat similar driving model, check that out if you haven't already.

Split/Second is an enjoyable experience, but nothing to come back to. You also need to race in bumper cam to get any feeling of speed thanks to the (slow) 30fps that it generates. THe later cars feel fast, but not the blistering speed you'd expect from other arcade racers.

Unbounded is a lot of fun but the difficulty really spikes up quite substantially in the last 25% of the game. One of the few arcade racers I enjoyed but gave up trying to finish due to this.

Why I dislike Burnout Paradise so vehemently...

- Tiny open world means you've seen all the game has to offer within the first two hours.
- Far too easy.
- No sense of progression. Upgrade your licence so you can play events you've already completed.
- Races become more of an exercise in navigation than anything else. Constantly having to pay attention to the mini-map or your indicators at the top of the screen is detrimental to the core racing experience.
- Botched Crash mode - unforgivable. Bouncing your vehicle against traffic is not remotely fun.

God how every fibre of my being craves a current-gen Burnout akin to Point of Impact/Takedown/Revenge.

I really didn't like this game. Preferred Need for Speed hot pursuit. That felt more like a burnout game.

This. Hot Pursuit was therapeutic after suffering Paradise.

One of the best games this gen. Sunk hundreds of hours, majority of it in online play. The game was such a blast to play with friends, cruising around Paradise City, looking for awesome jumps (quarry!) or doing the challenges. I remember how I almost stuck to town area but drove off to the mountains, every time I played in a party.

Best car is Jansen P12!

I loved it simply because arcade racers are about as popular as genital crabs this gen. But man, the open world hurt it so much:

  • navigation was borked, couldn't trust the roadsign flashing or the indicators since they usually activated way too late, and following the compass could mean you joined a highway with no exit that takes you the opposite direction
  • checking the minimap is no fun when your car is going 200mph through traffic
  • not able to set waypoints
  • novelty of exploration wore off real quickly
  • sparse junkyards meant I didn't play around with the variety cars as they wanted me to
It's a good time, but definitely my least favourite Burnout game, and ultimately a weird experiment in open-world racing games. Hot Pursuit is a whole different story though, that game is fantastic.

In my case I found it to be quite rewarding for an exercise in navigation and I did not find myself constantly having to pay attention to the mini-map because I learned the city. I didn't need giant yellow walls of TURN LEFT NOW FOR THE LOVE OF GOD TURN LEFT!, I had flashing turn signals, street names, and what I gained by my enjoyment in exploring the city and discovering it's routes and shortcuts. Once I knew the city and the roads and shortcuts, I barely paid attention to the thing any more and did far better times than if they had the walled off to just what the A.I. is programmed to do automatically.

After playing Burnout Paradise I went to Burnout 3 (first Burnout game I found used) to see what was so great that others kept brining the older titles up. I found myself quite confused by the experience as other than Crash Mode, it felt very much the same.
The "easiness" of all the different races types were just as much true in Burnout 3 as it was in Burnout Paradise for me, the races themselves felt quite similar just with more options of how to get there and adding GIANT COLOURED WALLS OF TURN THIS DIRECTION NOW! actually made it easier without changing how the races themselves felt in where to go or best to drift. Changing locations was nice sure, but it was all fluff as Paradise offered a lot of different "environments" in it's city and island, from mountains to waterfront to beach city, just without changing backgrounds to pretend it's in a different part of the world. Both games seemed equal in the number of different races, though I can see how some didn't want to see the same city for every bit even though the paths themselves changed and just as many different types of hazards.

I enjoyed Burnout 3, but in noway beyond Crash Mode (which I didn't even care for) was it a better game to me. Offline they were equal racing experiences to me for pure racing or crashing into other cars, but Paradise gave me exploration that I liked along with

To each their own of course, I just find it odd how much of a difference that in my mind, different names for locations and buildings to simulate you are actually in a different location for another "stage" and walled off sections can make someone appreciate one game over the other when it feels so similar in actual play to me.
Though I freely admit that for the longest time I didn't like racing games at all and I actually grow bored of just pre-arranged tracks after a while now that I do enjoy the genre, so perhaps I'm not really able to determine any real strong difference that makes 3 stand out as "better game" as so many have told me it is.

There may be only a few mission types but the game is a blast to play so it didn't bother me. Plus when you have had enough you can go online or simply play a different mode like crash mode or try and get road times.

As others have said you can restart the race with the patches.

Lots of people would care if it was 20fps split screen, online is fine.

Soundtrack was very good I thought.

You can change paint jobs, not being able to customizer cars doesn't bother me.

No people in it doesn't bother me either, its a burnout racing game, not a carmageddon.

Junkyard locations are a bit few and far between I'll agree.

Product placement was a bit annoying sure but it helped make this awesome game so I'm ok with it.

DJ was great I thought.

Multiplayer was fine, pick the right game for you.

Camera view is preference

I didn't have the store problem.

The DLC is a bit pricey but get it on a sale, Big Surf is worth full price though.

Each to their own I guess but this is one of my favourite games this gen and I would be all over a sequel and it's DLC.

Could someone answer this for me please if anyone knows?

So if I was to purchase the Ultimate Box, what content is missing exactly? I had a look and you get..

*New Vehicles including Motorbikes (Vrrrroom! Bikes! <3 )
*New Challenges
*Day/Night Cycle and Weather Effects

But what else is needed to make this the Complete Experience?

I believe everything after the Party Mode update is what's needed. So the tiny cars, Cops & Robbers, the special boost cars, the three special cars (the Ghostbusters car and stuff) and the island.

You don't get the Big Surf Island add-on, so a reasonable playground and a few of cars from that pack. I don't think you get the novelty car models (e.g toy cars) either.

I got it included in my Ultimate Box for PS3

Few of your complaints can be thwarted right off the bat. Custom soundtracks, DJ can be turned off, you can restart a race, and host can let you choose your car for example.

Honestly though to me if I were to rate Burnout Paradise as a racer it would get a pretty low score. It's more of a social game meant to be played with close friends. So many cool things you can do whether it's choreographing stunts, setting up your own custom made circuits and drag routes, one of the several multiplayer challenges, or simply trying to chase and crash into each other. Also the world may seem small but it's detailed - not graphically, but gameplay wise. Many hidden places to find and alternate routes and jumps and all that jazz.

But for CRYING OUT LOUD, why is there no splitscreen? This isn't a "Paradise" gripe, this is a "trends in current racers" gripe. You could argue lack of splitscreen is more of a "this gen in general" thing, but the fact that it's not in nearly all the major racing titles has gotten beyond ridiculous. That's the main reason people (or I at least) buy racing games in the first place. Paradise is the only non-splitscreen game I bought (rented others) and that's just because I really really dig the social multiplayer it created. Such a damn shame.

Because its open world. The game would have two load twice the amount of data if the players are in different parts of the city

I posted this, think you might have missed it

Ultimate box gets you everything, no more DLC needed, you will have everything!

Hmmmmm, I was under the impression the Ultimate Box was missing something as I was sure that was released before they stopped releasing DLC. Thanks though! =)

Maybe my memory is just a bit fuzzy, maybe I'll check it out. I remember on 360 I was about 9??/1000, just needed some camera achievement and some of the MP challenges (man they were annoying when people wouldn't head to the locations) prior to DLC coming out.

Yeh. I just checked the PS3 version and while it loads up with the new Big Surf Island title screen and all, it's not on the disc and requires real funds to play. Same with Cops and Robbers and a few other packs.

If you're on PS3, you made the right choise. Midnight Club on PS3 is supposedly shit.

Nah, I'm on 360. The thing that kept me away was I heard the difficulty was batshit, and none of my friends had it, in fact, I'm not even sure if the servers are even up for it.

Did not enjoy it at all. Burnout 3 and Revenge are the pinnacle. I think I prefer 3 for the best crash-mode but revenge was a tad faster and I actually liked traffic checks.

The didn't really click with a lot of people, I'm one of the many that it did click with. I own it on all platforms and it is my favorite racer of all times. I have logged countless hours into this game.

Went back to this earlier on 360. I was pleasantly surprised to see people are still playing this online! Never done that before so I did a few challenges which were kinda fun aside from those ones where one car has to jump over the other 6. People who don't play along with that stuff and just drive into you all while you're parked are the worst. Also my performance in a subsequent 5 race series was not impressive.

I love the Road Rage activities though. They're like a tech demo. LOOK AT HOW OUR CARS CAN CRUMPLE. It's so fun.

The servers were DOA for Midnight Club LA. I picked up the 360 version over the Xmas it was released and I struggled to find a game. Ended up achievement boosting one mode with a friend but that was it. Good game though regardless.

Still the go-to game when I don't have anything new to play and the feel of doin challenges, I love doin those. It's a 2008 game but there are enough people playing this.

Playing with custom soundtracks for a few hours is great. Played over 600 hours.

If I want racing, I'll go with Hot Pursuit.

One tip, don't use restarts. When you fail, there is always an event closeby and it's a great way to know the roads and shortcuts.

Burnout Paradise wasn't that great at release but now it's an amazing game.

BTW, I would actually recommend the console versions over the PC version for this. The game runs at 60fps on PS3/360 and the PC version has lots of content not accessible.

I always see the same pattern from people loving Paradise that much.
Don't like racing games at all, couldn't care less about the actual races or racing. They just enjoy that it is fast, controls good & has a big open world.

For those who were interested, here is a quick look at Burnout Paradise, when it was still known as Burnout 5

I never got to play much of it. I picked it up recently in that fifteen dollar bundle EA is running (Mirrors Edge, Saboteur, Mercs 2, Burnout Paradise Ult Box, Bulletstorm) so I think I'll install it soon.

This game was so much fun. With so much stuff to do.
I love the way you had to take down certain vehicles in order to add them to your collection. That reminded me a lot of Carmageddon 1.
Brilliant game !

Interesting! Looked kind of crap, but I guess it's early beta.

Thats just how things go, games dont magically look pretty :P And the point of not putting a direct Youtube link is so that people actually go to the site, since I do spend a few hours getting footage together, and if they have questions, I am more likely to see them. Giving the source credit isn't the end of the world hah.

Thanks for this, I really love seeing WIP footage of games. I saw aftertouch and and impact time buttons prompts after you crashed, I take it they didn't work?

I'll look the video and play Paradise at the same time to see how different and same they both look. I could actually recognise some of the locations from the video.

Sorry about that with the link, took it away :) Didn't know it was your video!

The open world killed the series.

NFS Hot Pursuit is the best arcade racer this gen.

Open world killed the RACING. If a Burnout Paradise sequel created actual tracks within its city layout (circuits, not just point to point) it would be the best of both worlds. As it is, I probably dropped near 100 hours into Paradise just messing around online doing barrel rolls and junk crashing into people because it was way more fun than the races IMO.

The buttons didnt do much, slowed down time more than anything.

The retail BP:UB includes all patches and DLC up to (and including) the Party Pack. Which means that bikes, weather, day/night cycle are included in that version of the game. What isn't, and requires a hefty download, is what came afterwards: Legendary Cars, Toy Cars, Boost Specials, Cops and Robbers, Big Surf Island.

I agree that the "Ultimate Box" is a rather misleading title considering all the DLC (or GCC as they called it) they released next. Here's the list of all the packs. I don't know if there's a PSN version/bundle that that includes everything.

i think BP is a fan service game - so many "cool" things that fans asked have been added, for instance open world... but in real world, open world games suck. It is very cool premise but also ends up very confusing.

other than that issue with the core game, i thought presentation, music, graphics and other things like night/day cycles, were awesome.
