LTTP: Dark Souls (PS3)

Just beat the game earlier today.

Overall, I thought the game was absolutely amazing. Dark Souls is easily one of my favorite games this gen period. The atmosphere felt amazing, the level design felt well thought out (most of the time anyway), and it feels so satisfying to overcome something that felt impossible. I like this game a lot more than Demon’s Souls mainly because the world felt more open and I enjoyed the boss battles more in Dark. I also really loved the atmosphere of the game more.

Like Demon’s, the game was, uh, pretty hard. I found myself being really patient and being more careful as I progressed through the game (and I'm not normally a patient person at all). That said, I found the game to be a little easier than Demon’s (I don’t think I died nearly as much), though that might just be me having some experience with the Souls game already.

My favorite boss was probably the
Great Grey Wolf Sif. He was probably the most fun boss fight for me (not to mention, it felt awesome fighting a giant wolf with a giant sword), and I actually felt sad for him when he started limping near the end of the fight.
Hardest boss for me is easily
Ornstein and Smough. I was stuck on these guys for three whole hours before I decided to wuss out and call for help. Their boss theme is pretty cool though. I’m gonna try and beat them on my own in my NG+ playthrough.

While in Demon’s I went with a mage style kind of character, I mainly used a sword style melee type of character in Dark. I’m probably going to start a new game with the sorcerer starting class soon.

So yeah, basically I loved it. My GOTY of 2011. Definitely going to buying the DLC that's coming out. =D

Glad you enjoyed it. Go for the sorceress next, they're really fun to play in DkS!

Played through Dark Souls: Prepare to Die using Durante's patch at 1080p, 60fps.

Best JRPG I've played in years and years. It was incredible in every way. Easy GOTY 2011.

After playing through Dark Souls on PC I tried to go back to Demon's Souls on PS3, but I couldn't.

Is the game as difficult as the first time on new game+ ?

I'd like to replay it since I completely missed the Painted World, but I don't wanna invest as much time as during the first time.

Incredible game though.

Painted World wasn't anything worth playing the game again for. It's extremely short, as well.

If you played it on consoles and have a decent gaming PC, 1080p and 60fps is, however.

Maybe I'm just a bitch for not doing it solo, but O&S was relatively easy once you summon Solaire and always position yourself and the enemy between a pillar. Took me maybe 10-15 tries? Not too bad. Five Kings had me at over 20 and Gwyn and Artorias both must have been at least 30.

Also that music is fucking incredible. So is Taurus Demon.

Three days for me. One of my most ecstatic moments in gaming when I beat those jackwagons.

And yep the music is fantastic.

All enemies do more damage and have increased HP, but you should be able to breeze through the first portion of the game up to the first major challenge: Ornstein & Smough. Plus you've got all your experience, knowledge, and items. As an example, my first playthrough lasted a good 80 hours or so, but in the second I hit Lost Izalith after only about 8 hours.

The only major stumbling block I faced in NG+ were the Four Kings, where they became easily the hardest boss fight in the game for me because of that buff to their HP, making it very difficult to eliminate individually before the rest of them spawned.

Blighttown, The Depths.
Lost Izalith

But the other levels are great. Its interconnected level design might just be the most ingenious thing about the game.

I also found a new appreciation for the From artists after playing the Durante Edition. The style is still gorgeous but the sheer amount of detail they packed into the textures was a real surprise for me.

edit: this is obviously the best song on the soundtrack.

The game isn't hard. It's actually quite easy.

It merely gives the player 100% control. And a lot of people aren't used to that any more.

It's absolutely mindblowing that they rendered the art with such incredible detail, essentially never meaning for it to be seen by anyone.

Let's not get crazy here, Dark Souls is a hard game by 2012 standards. Those of us forged in the "memorize and repeat" tradition of NES games as children don't find it necessarily frustrating or unfair, but going as far as calling it "easy" is disingenuous.

The first time I was able to play was when it came to PC, and needless to say I was absolutley blown away.

The atmosphere, the music, the artstyle, the multiplayer, and last but definitely not least, the gameplay.

Really From created almost a perfect game, as said in some posts already, after Anor Londo some of the bosses aren't tuned correctly and some of the areas are really lame (Lost Izalith).

Blows my mind too how much detail was lost in the console version or at low resolutions. At higher resolutions and with AF the detail in the textures really start to come out.

Honestly, everyone who enjoys Action and RP games should play Dark Souls. Period.

I suppose you didn't die at all. Good job. But what do you mean in the rest of your post? 100% of what?

i soloed the whole game, and o&s were pretty tough, as was gwyn. i died a ton to sif, even though many people consider that one of the easier bosses. five kings i beat on my first or second try. the easiest bosses were probably quelaag, nito, and iron golem. as tough as o&s were, they are probably my favorite fight in the game. havent fought artorias, as i played it on ps3.

OP: the game is great, glad you got around to playing it. i am probably going to restart with an INT character soon in preparation for the DLC. i played a high DEX pyromancer the first time.

One of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard in a game. Very fitting for the final boss.

I died A LOT. But every death was my own fault. I either wasn't paying attention or I got too greedy trying to get in one last attack. That's not the game being hard. That's me being stupid and paying the price for it. Now that I'm experienced, I barely die at all, even using considerably worse gear than on my first play.

I mean the game doesn't tell you where to go or what you should be doing, things modern games do all the time to make sure you don't fail. Actually it doesn't really tell you anything so the onus is 100% on the player to figure things out.

Gwyn's track is beautiful, but I disagree that it fits the theme of the final boss. Just personal opinions, but I would have prefer'd something more immediate and epic, like the Taurus Demon or Bell Gargoyle theme.

Artorias is a good fight, one of the better bosses in the game. Which is good, considering it's DLC.

In my opinion the DLC bosses are some of the best in the game.

It makes sense based on the lore and whats going on in context of that fight though.

i think the best descriptions of it i have heard are that it punishes mistakes and rewards patience. it is hard in the sense that new players are likely to die a lot, but it always feels fair, which makes it not-frustrating.

i liked the way it felt melancholy. you are never exuberant in dark souls, you just survive, and sometimes that isnt even for the best.

id say this and demons souls are the best games of the generation for me. i dont want to get in an argument over which is better (honestly i dont even know myself), but they are both among my favorite games of all time.

i cant wait for the dlc and this only makes me want it more. i was actually just discussing with a friend of mine the best way to get it. i own the japanese and american ps3 versions, but if the PAL version is a physical prepare to die edition i may get that. i dont think my PC could run it.

I never got into the lore of Dark Souls. I'd rather play the game than read a wiki, but I completely understand where you're coming from for those who are interested in it.

I would say Dark Souls is better merely because of Durante and expensive PC hardware.

I would play the shit out of Demon's Souls at 1080p, 60fps.

I was holding off for PC ver and then the reviews hit on the poor porting.

With that said, which ver of this has the best value and most online play?
If you have high-end PC hardware, Dark Souls: Prepare to Die PC is unquestionably the best version of the game. The difference is staggering.

The left shot is Dark Souls PC running at the default locked 1024x720, which is the same as it runs on consoles. Right shot is unlabeled, but probably some insanely high resolution downsampled to 1920x1080.

PC is probably the best value.

Best looking graphics, best performance, and I got it for about $20 on GMG.

I'm told once you connect to the server, which takes about 5 minutes it seems. People are saying the online performance is pretty similar to the PS3/Xbox version. There are some failed summons, but I think that was because there were so many concurrent users online at the beginning and people were spamming their signs and summoning.

Opening up port 3074 on your router helps a lot too. Note: Some places tell you to open up about 5 ports, most of these are security risks, only open the one listed.

You should play RE6.

lol

Linear gameplay.

And I read the thread describing what Capcom doesn't tell you, and watched a couple videos the OP recommended. The mechanics seem pretty simple from what I read. You stun, hit the buttons it tells you too to melee, and dodge when you get surrounded...doesn't seem terribly deep at all.

There are literally on screen prompts for what to do, when to do it. If you think that game is deep, or confused by what Capcom doesn't 'tell' you, than you might have trouble as soon as you get dropped into Dark Souls.

Yep, that's probably my favorite song in the game. Ornstein & Smough's theme was great too.

Sums up how I feel about the game, and I loved it.

Awesome game, I was close to finishing it but my save got corrupted when my ps3 died. The thought of starting at level 1 again was too much, maybe i will try again someday.

For anyone who started the game on consoles and could never get into it, the superior quality of the PC version is worth a second look (granted you have medium to high end hardware and a PC-compatible gamepad). If you were particularly looking for a reason.

I was honestly expecting it to be a lot harder. The reputation seems almost undeserving. But it's a fun game nonetheless. I just wish it kicked my ass more.

It's not hard just challenging. If you play smart and conservative you can play for hours without dying.

My first time through the game was kind of a slog. I had played Demon's Souls multiple times, so I essentially knew what to expect, but I played without using a guide, and got hung up fairly badly a few times. Ornstein and Smough was a huge sticking point, as you'd expect. I also got cursed multiple times (back pre-patch when curses stacked) which almost made me quit the game.

I only replayed the game recently, and wow what a difference. Even taking my time, I took less than half the time I did the first time through, and I slaughtered O and S (solo melee). I even did it the "harder" way by killing Smough first. At least that used to be considered the harder way.

I just bought some PSN points to get the DLC next week. It's the first "game" I've really anticipated since Dark Souls, if I remember right.

Nothing else this gen compares to the Souls games.

Even though I haven't done it, I can't imagine SL1 would be that difficult once you have a good weapon and shield.

Try a dual caestus build, that will really test your limits. Beat Capra with this build and it was freaking intense. And it's so awesome finishing off a boss with a falcon punch to the face.
