LTTP: Dragon Quest VII (PS1/3DS) | Like a Jumbo Box of Cereal

Thanks for the impressions.

I had already made up my mind to buy an LL and a JA copy of DQVII but it is good to know that it is fairly beginner friendly with the furigana. That will definitely be a boon for me. Those screen shots look great.

I was disappointed with these things at first, as well, but in the grand scheme they work out to be minor. In every other way, I feel that DQ7 received the remake it deserved. I wish I could say the same about 6.

I know you and I share similar opinions on the remake of 6. Hearing you say that makes me feel more comfortable about 7

Man I still cannot even believe PlayStation Dragon Quest VII made it over to the U.S. / NA in '01, a little over a year after its release in Japan.

Did that really happen, or 13 years ago did just have a dream it happened?

You mean I can still officially play DQ VII in English without a fan-translation, without importing, without emulating a ROM, etc etc ?

Well I'll be damned.

So I found an original copy of this game for the ps1 a couple of months ago and just completed it, so I thought I would comment. I suggest people read this post if they are planning on playing the game and never have before. As such, there are some spoilers ahead.

A few positives. Things I found that held up to this day was:

1. The animation for the monsters. Some beautiful battle animation.
2. The Class system; a variety of magic and skills
3. Some funny innuendo. (A princess took me back into her room and gave me some action while my party waited for me

In terms of positives, that is pretty much it. The fact of the matter is, DW 7 ranks as one of the most tedious/annoying game's I've ever played and that is coming from someone who love's JRPG's.

The game is definitely long like many people say. I completed it finally at about 110 hours, with lots more left to do if I wanted to. The game has a past and present mechanic which makes the player replay each area of the game multiple times; it becomes very repetitive and boring. There are certain area's of the game you have to go through at least 3 times.

In order to keep the story advancing, you need to locate these Shards to unlock certain area's of the game. The location of the Shard's vary; some being extremely easy to miss, leaving you twiddling your thumbs, stumped, no longer allowing you to progress through the game until you find them. The shards are hidden in both past and present and if you miss one, (which you most certainly will) what a pain it is to find them, especially without resorting to using a guide.

There are also monster's/ boss's that are extremely unbalanced. I'm generally someone who likes to play overpowered. I made it to a boss once that it didn't matter how strong I was because it's lackey's kept spamming sleep and silent spells while the main guy was blowing my party of with area spells.

There are also just blatant mistakes. Lot's of typo's and misinformation. NPC's telling you go Northeast, while you need to go Northwest and such.

I never plan on playing this game again and it has tarnished me from wanting to replay the remake.

There is an NPC who will tell you where to look for shards if you missed any. She's in the pit in front of the mech base in the Falrish area. You don't need a guide.
