Summary for the MTV generation: Giant list of Doctor Who episodes, watch them when gaf does, discuss and share.

(if this thread doesn't take off, no fuss, well go on with it in the Who thread, just thought it would be nice to share with those who don't like to venture into big threads)

Greetings GAF, so over in the Doctor Who thread conversation is rife with spoilers! Discussions about episodes having aired recently, and decades ago.

Many of us in there had not seen the early seasons of Doctor Who, and thought it would be great to go on a crash course of Who. And we thought we'd make a thread to get others involved (after all, it's a large thread, and things can get lost)

So here's the Idea.

Every three days a new Doctor Who serial (sometimes they're in groups of 2 episodes, sometimes 4, sometimes more!) will be watched (feel no rush to watch it right away, the three days are there so everyone can watch at their own pace, and see what the more experience members of the Whoniverse have to say, and to get some fresh opinions on some old shows)

Links will be shared for legal places to view the episodes (this is where some help comes in! itunes and BBC and whatever else links for your region, if you find it share!) , and even, god forbid links to buy the episodes.

Don't feel pressured if you join in to try and keep up, jump in when ever you want, leave when ever you want. Heck watch the first episode, decide it's not for you, come back in a month or 3 and see where we're at!

Here's the list of episodes that some of us in the Dr Who Season 5 thread picked that would be a great list of episodes for people looking to get into Who, or even people who have watched and loved the reboot, but would just like to see where it all began..

Current episodes will be underlined, and as episodes come up they will be linked to a post in this thread which will contain all the information you could need (links, information, where to buy)

I plan to watch every episode ever made, in order. Any problems with this plan?

:( why BBC why?

I think the first episode of every new doctor should be on the list as an introduction (I know there's hate for "Rose" but you really left out "The Eleventh Hour"?

Lol'd at your post.. then the spoiler :( It hurt.

It was really hard selecting Troughton episodes what with most of the episodes not existing.. or if they do only existing in audio form.. or made out of still photos... or even worse.. cartoons..
I didn't think new who watchers would be too keen on that..

I know the 70s, when they started wiping old tapes, was before home video, but BBC should have known better.

Nowadays we have Star Trek, from the early 60s, in high def on blu-ray :p

A quick FAQ for those new to the Whoniverse

Who is the doctor?

He is a timelord! an alien.. who can time travel.. and live to a ripe old age... oh and did I mention when he gets close to dying.. he regenerates? That's why there are so many different versions of him!

What's with the policebox?

That be his TARDIS (box can travel in space and time, oh yeah and it's bigger on the inside)

Now a few other things:

What's with Boco Dragons post?

Well in the 70's the BBC cleaned / destroyed a lot of tape to save money and space... there were a lot of Doctor Who episodes lost, some have been refound, be it in other countries, or via audio recordings where fans have recreated the episodes visuals with still photography from the set or even animations!

more questions to go here when I can think straight and its not 6:26am

Two summers ago, I attempted to do this, but with every available serial

That didn't go too well, I think I only got to just after Vicki took over from Susan >_>

I'll definitely try for this though, should be fun

Also, I agree with the comment about having the first serial of each Doctor. Not sure why, it just seems like we should

I just figured out how we can find the missing episodes!

If we have light speed travel we can probably catch up to the shows somewhere around the star Regulus!

Get on it GAFfers.

Fair enough! I tried to get the final serials.. I watched Robot the other day Bakers first... and oh boy.. That's why I didn't put it in lol.

But! There's plenty of time, I can give the list a rejig tomorrow! It does seem like a good idea

Anyone know where I can view part 3 of "An Unearthly Child" from the youtube link. I have no idea why the BBC only blocked that particular part.

Not on youtube, seems the BBC has gone about blocking part 3 all over youtube.. strange!

I'm actually doing this with a friend who I just got hooked onto New Who. Took awhile for her to get used to the "molasses-like" pacing, as she called it, but she's really enjoying it now. We just finished Marco Polo.

Only episode I ever saw had the doctor being a useless scared twat for 99% of the show and then "returning to normal" at which point he did horrible things to a group of bad guys that made him seem like a massive dick.

great thread, the Fnarg one has been fantastic and I'm looking forward to this! Could maybe pick some of the better Tenant ones though ha.

I just heard that Christopher Nolan said he'd make a movie of Dr. Who if Jeff Goldblum signs on as the Doc.

God damn I just realised Marco Polo isn't on your list! That's an abomination, it's one of my favourite Who serials, let alone Hartnell (best doctor ever). Even as a reconstruction it works really well.

Edit: re read your post properly!

Didn't want to scare off the new kids with audio recordings and stills

Marco Polo also has the best reconstruction since it was one of the Who serials that had the most photographs taken. There's multiple photos per scene, in fact.

Fucking awesome. I've always wanted to watch Doctor Who but couldn't find a very good place to watch them. Do those dates work for BBC America?

I can watch the seasons on Netflix. Is the movie up there? Can you edit the list to include which seasons they're part of?

Dunno bout the movie on netflix, can't check it from my side of the pond!

I shall indeed edit to say what seasons episodes are in, and I think I'll put another column for how many episodes are in the serial.

Here is my Dr Who scarf my mum knitted me for a costume party a few years ago! It's not quite as long as it could have been... but she got bored lol.

Excited about this. I think I'm going to do this with my wife. (She's seen all the new stuff, but very little of the old series.)

I'll chime in on the first. Unearthly Child is a great episode and start to the series, but I can't watch The Firemaker without falling asleep to save my life.

EDIT: I just noticed "Time and the Rani is listed as a Colin Baker ep. Isn't that McCoy? It's the regeneration ep.

Ditto on being the first Doctor thing and his portrayal was great, I also like Matt Smith and Tom Baker (awesome hair).

I think I'll join in on this marathon, I haven't seen all the old ones.

(EDIT) Why no Blink? Is it because it's low on Doctor and high on side-characters? :(

Christmas episodes at the end! but with all these complaints I might change them!

and it is indeed Retro! Changing it now!

Will put in all the doctors first episodes (ones that can be done)

and I think i'll change tennants episodes lol.. no one seems to want a RTD christmas!

Are we watching parts of the entire series or is it just the new one that started in 2005? I see the first Doctor's name but I don't know where to watch the first series except for DVD. I kind of just wanted to start with the 2005 version since it's what everybody talks about these days.

;_; I'll keep posting here damn it!

Updated the OP with all first and last eps of doctors that can be seen, wasnt sure on troughton!

added columns too showing what season it's a part of to make it easier for those getting it off netflix or stuff, and how many episodes are in each serial!

I remember I did an entire series watch a few years ago. I guess I will do this so sign me up, I think I still have these eps somewhere.

First episode is great but I've always found the rest of the story a little boring. Still, it's hard not to love the first Doctor Who serial. It's still discovering itself, much like a newly regenerated Doctor. Sydney Newman was big on the show being educational in nature and you can definitely feel that here.
