LTTP: Lana Del Rey

I'm usually one of the last people to hear about the next big pop culture thing. With Lana Del Ray I actually heard about her pretty early on in the cycle, so I was able to watch her growth and it seemed so strangely artificial and preordained.
 
I found her to be unremarkable and really boring in general

I really love "Dark Paradise" though. "Radio" and "Ride" are good too... those are the only songs I can really remember from her. "Blue Jeans" is also growing on me.

I'm late to this thead but yes her album hasn't been out a year and she has accomplished so much, I love her.

Also, those "manufactured" comments. Please. Y'all should read this interview with the guy who first signed her (during the Lizzy Grant days). It is pretty informative.
 
I really hope Lana Del Rey is manufactured, because I'm glad that somebody is making the effort to completely pander to me, and I hope that this is a recipe that can easily be repeated.

American, Gods and Monsters, Off to the Races, Born to Die, and National Anthem are all brilliant.

It's just 4 songs. I literally can't remember anything about any of her songs I didn't list.
Maybe not boring as she can clearly make stuff I like but I overall I don't really like what she's released.
 
The fact that she's manufactured is kind of part of the point of the whole Lana Del Rey thing. Indie blogs didn't get that at first which is why they pegged her as 'authentic' and then bailed out when they realised the whole thing is a deliberate pastiche of 'authenticity'.

How could a person who sings a line like 'my pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola' not be a) amazing b) totally an utterly deliberately inauthentic? It's even 'Pepsi Cola', the 'inauthentic' facsimile of real Coca Cola.

She is manufactured (rich family - playing the hipster card (for a lack of a better term) etc.). But who cares, she has a busted face and can't sing nor has any stage presence.

Gotta admit her music has really grown on me. Wasn't a big fan initialy, partly thanks to the massive internet hype. But months later and i listen to her music more often then ever.

My biggest fear right now is that people catch me singing "my pussy tastes like Pepsi cola" lol

She has great songs, which makes all of the stuff you've mentioned (whether true or not) completely irrelevant.
 
Am I missing something with her? Her songs are so boring and her videos are like an Instagram photo come to life. Pop-GAF is desperate to cling on to anyone.

I find her music boring which would be enough on its own but every time I hear her sing live she sounds like a sack of dying cats. I guess being talented was never a requisite for being a pop singer, but she is getting away with murder as bad as she is.
 
She's manufactured out the ass and a lot of her lyrics are cringe worthy hipster shit, but she's got a unique sound with great production.
 
I would smang the shit out of her.

When her H&M posters were up all over town here, I would walk around with a constant boner.

Lolz. Just listened to exactly these five songs to see if my mind about her would change if I delve more into it. GAF is wrong. Her music is boring and horrible. She lacks any clear creative direction and does not have any clear idea what to do with her, truth be told, good voice. Her different "styles" sound forced and unnatural.
Production seems smooth as shit without any edges or cracks... that gets you something that appeals to as many people as possible.
What you get is a production that could run 24h straight as background music in a mall or elevator. Add texts that sound like pretentious hipster drivel and you get this shit.

I get the feeling Lana del Rey is designed for people who don't want to be challenged by music but want to pretend that they are.

There's still a lot of people that can't let go of that SNL performance. I hear about it when I mention her name. "Oh that girl that was horrible on SNL?" Who knew that show was a kingmaker. But yeah she's still come a long way in a short period of time. I think she should have picked up some Grammy noms, but the US music industry seems to have a stick up it's butt where she's concerned.
