LttP: Persona 4 - The Golden (no spoilers please)

Beat Shadow Rise last night. She was a bit of a challenge with a party around level 32 and I thought all was well. Then they pulled the rug out from under me and I had to fight Shadow Teddie. Luckily I had a Persona that nullified ice attacks, so it wasn't so bad, survival-wise. It just took ages.

Do the characters you don't use get experience at all? I left Kenji behind because he was a few good levels ahead of the rest of the party, but the sheer grind of Marakyu Lounge meant that they sailed right past him. Is it worth levelling everyone or is it better to just stick with a core team?

Rise seems a little flat so far, personality wise.

I stuck with a core team and didn't have any problems. Keeping more people leveled isn't bad, but it might be unnecessary and might lead to more days in the TV and fewer doing Social Links. I mainly focused on having an incredibly versatile MC for most fights.

Charlie Tunoku was the main character's name in a Giant Bomb LP, and Kenpachi Ramasama was from the Two Best Friends Play LP. Nothing to worry about!
It is not just an LP. It is the f'n ENDURANCE RUN.

Persona 4 is one of those games I get 20-30 hours in, then I get distracted, and restart like 3 months later. One day I'll beat it myself.

Yeah, I just used the first three you get throughout the game. The MC can cover any weaknesses.

Guys. The game is 4 years old (or 8, if you count the PS2 version). I mean. Jokes are funny because they are fresh and you don't really expect them. After so much time it just gets boring and turns other people off.

Jokes? Oh, you mean the people saying anyone but Chie is bae.

One thing you can always do if you just play with the same party members is to kill the one who is weak to the boss, if your MC is versatile enough you should be fine against most of the bosses.

Amazing game but not getting to play for the first few hours was a terrible design choice and I hope Persona 5 does nothing of that sort.

Also, I prefer Persona 3: FES by a bit.

This whole "senpai" thing gets taken really seriously, doesn't it? I'm from a Hispanic background so I get the whole thing about speaking differently to your elders, peers and juniors, but a year isn't enough of a gap for me to suddenly jump to calling someone "usted". I do like that they left it in even though I would normally prefer that stuff localised out. The setting is so strongly Japanese that it actually makes sense.

Enjoy it!

Persona 3 is even better, so make sure to check that out too! Actually you should have play it first, but oh well.

without a guide, this is almost impossible to do.

This is partly why I'm happy about the five month delay for Persona 5's release between the Japanese and English versions. I like the Persona games, but I have no patience for the time management parts and would rather just follow a "100% in one playthrough" guide, hopefully one will be ready by the time of release.

Funny timing. I'm taking a quick break after beating the final boss as I type this.

I posted the following in the "what jrpg are you playing?" thread about six weeks ago:

--------
I got the PSTV for [P4G] and I had (and still have) a really hard time getting into [it]. I may have to give up on it, as I think I was at 10-12 hours before I stopped (which is a thing I never really do - [when I'm that far in, I'm usually all-in]).

I'm not certain where I fall in the casual/die-hard JRPG spectrum, but Chrono Trigger and FFVI are tied as my #1 game of all-time. I've played all the FFs and thought Ni no Kuni was pretty good. I owned and finished Wild Arms and Suikoden back on the PSOne.

I want to like it, but maybe it's the setting? :\

--------

Well, lol, 160+ hours later one my first (and only) playthrough,
wow
. And as I said, I'm literally about to commence the
true ending
so I'm confident the narrative wrap-up will be rewarding.

Of course, I have a bunch of comments (and some criticisms), but I'll need to come back for that.

Ok, game completed. Wow. It's been a long time since I cared about and enjoyed the characters this much in a JRPG since...FFIX? I feel like I need to play a couple FPS or sports games to cleanse my palette. Anything with a narrative and I'll be like...where's Nanako and Rise and Brosuke?!?!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but if I had a choice to play P5 or FFXV right this second, I think I'd choose the former

I played until Kanji's dungeon a few years ago in vanilla P4, but I own P4G.
Should I keep going from where I left off?
Or should I recreate my save using that P4G savedata editor and play that? (Or I guess I could start fresh in P4G, are there many P4G exclusive early events?)

I'd recommend moving to P4G. I liked P4, but the minor improvements and additions in P4G really add up to the point where I'd put it on almost the same level as the truly great SMT games like Nocturne/DDS/Strange Journey.

I... don't understand.

Again, I don't get it. Is this a character spoiler?

I named the main character after myself.

Also, I haven't been able to join any of the cultural clubs because I left rescuing Yukiko to the last minute and had to spend multiple consecutive days trying to clear her dungeon. Is that missable?

It's not missable, you can join pretty much whenever AFAIK, once the clubs are actually open to sign-ups.

As a rule of thumb you should spend as few days in the dungeons as possible to save more time for social linking, but Yukiko's Castle is when that rule of thumb is the hardest to enforce. Don't freak out about min-maxing it or anything, but try to push yourself to your absolute limit, reaching that one extra staircase, before you go home to sleep up. It'll add up in the long run.

Didn't P4G make it a lot easier? And it has the worse Chie voice.

My advice is: don't romance multiple girls...it makes an awkward New Year's Day date and a "feeling shitty" Valentines Day.

Other than that enjoy OP! P4G is one of my favorite games of all time

Blasphemy!!!

It's been too long since the last LTTP for P4G. You gotta play through at least twice if not three times to get the full effect. Don't worry about making any mistakes that first run, just get through it. When you're 50 hours in and just hitting the onsen, there's still nearly another game's worth of story ahead.

Two words: MULTIPLE SAVES

That's a really sad way to play your first time thru.

Honestly it's more fun to just go blind and miss a few S.Link endings. Just look up how to get the true ending and Golden's extended ending.

And I guess it needs reiterating, but OP ignore the fuckng dumb waifu shit/x is best girl. Seriously wtf is wrong with you guys.

I'll have a much better chance of finishing it if it's portable.

I will say that Rise has the others beat in terms of looks (which is sort of the point, I guess), which may be why people here are implying she's popular, but I am having a hard time gauging who she is as a character. So far, she just seems like somebody in a funk.

Speaking of funks, Kou and the girl from Drama club have it rough and seem to be of a thoughtful bent. If they were real people I'd try to set them up on a blind date or something.

The thing with Rise is that her character grows on you over time after you've cleared her dungeon.

BTW have you started doing the Moon Arcana social link? It's one that opens up once you get Kou's social link to level 4. Whatever you do you have to do Ai Ebihara's social link. Her one is one of the most iconic from the game.

I always wuss out at the same part at this game, when
Nanako
is about to be taken. Then I set aside for months and when I get back to it I forget everything I was doing, s-link wise and have to start over again. I really should finish it (and Persona Q) this time before 5 drops, but in in the middle of an LTTP for SMT IV just now. Maybe after.

P4G is a lot easier, yes. I'd recommend playing on Hard mode at least.

That's a really sad way to play your first time thru.

I did this for P3:FES, P3P, P4, and P4G. I really could not give less of a crap about the time management and social skill leveling aspects, they're archaic and annoying to deal with. If I could just cheat in max social skills at the start so I wouldn't have to worry about managing my time I would, but I can't and I don't want to play a 70-100 hour game twice to see everything.

Yeah, I have her up to level 2. She's annoying so far, but judging by the rest of the game, I'm sure she has hidden depth.

Also, given some of the crowd this game appeals to, I'm surprised at the direction the game is going with the video game dungeon. What with Gamergate and all the women hating anime loving shut ins it's outed, it's very meta.

YMMV. I soured on her slink, because
it showed how hypocritical she was in wanting to show that there's more to herself than her idol persona, and yet, she holds onto it.

Just bought this for a surprisingly low 10 bucks on PSN.
I'm enjoying the game a bit TOO much, it's hard to put down because there's a constant stream of activities and stats upgrades to go for.

Years ago I watched the anime (and the true ending of the game on youtube), but despite knowing everything I don't feel like I'm missing out on any mystery or thrill of the unknown.

I still have not seen it for some reason. Well, I keep getting side tracked with other shows, but I will definitely watch it at some point.

It should still be streaming on Crunchyroll: (which would be free with commercials)

www.crunchyroll.com/persona4-the-golden-animation

Or through Hulu at: (everything has a fee now)

www.hulu.com/persona-4
Thanks for linking this. As someone who's never played the games and didn't know much about the series I'm really enjoying this show.

That feeling when you're getting all the best cards and upgrading your persona skills like a madman, but a lucky critical wipes out your main character a foot from the stairs to the next level -_-

Well, you're playing Golden, so not too much progress is lost! I started with that too and when I went back to past games without some of the updates to the gameplay, it was tough at times. Random insta-kills like Mudo and Hama sending me back to my last save and making me lose 1h+ of progress in Persona 3, that was some feeling.

Everybody bitches about this, but I agree with you it's good they left honorifics in. The game is soooooooooo Japanese it needs them.

Also
Chie is bae

Despite myself, I find that Yukiko is growing on me. I don't know if it's because I see a lot of myself in her personality or if it's because she is exactly the kind of girl I would have had a crush on in high school (maybe it's both), but I look forward to seeing how her story progresses. She is basically Winnie Cooper in a kimono.

Chie though is more nuanced. You can tell she has a lot of insecurities brought about by not feeling "woman" enough and her friendship with Yukiko just exacerbates that. Having the boy she had a crush on asking if Yukiko is still single must have stung.

Hate to double post, but does anyone have any tips on how to defeat the boss of the Void Quest dungeon? His first form is easy enough but trying to survive his attacks in his second form is near impossible. I just finished a spot of grinding and my party is at around level 41.

Try and have Null Fear on the protag, if possible. Otherwise, smart guarding will help prevent everyone from getting Fear'd then killed by Ghastly Wail. If anything, the most important thing is to prevent anyone from getting knocked down.

I think I fused Black Frost for that fight back in the day. Worked pretty well IIRC. Black Frost has a few innate immunities and learns heavy Ice and Fire spells, i.e. can do a lot of damage real fast.

Thanks for that. It cost me every last penny I had to fuse him and about a half hour grind to get him to learn Agidyne, but I was able to beat the boss comfortably.

Although, now that I caught him, I'm starting to suspect he's not really the killer. Maybe he's delusional or just taking credit for someone else's work.

What's the trigger for "you feel that your relationship will deepen"? I can't seem to boost Marie any higher than the level I'm at and I have spent several afternoons with her already. Was that wasted time?

The whole sequence over the summer (after you beat the Void Quest dungeon) was a nice change of pace. I took the time to build up my life skill stats and Max out some of the social links I was neglecting. The Yukiko s-link is now at level 9 and it gave the option to make the relationship "intimate", which I accepted.

Rise's s-link seems to rise (heh) fairly quickly. I suspect it's because you have very little time with her compared to the others. It fits with her character though, as she's very pushy and has a clear agenda regarding what she wants from the main character.

Do the interactions with the other characters change now that the main character and Yukiko are "intimate"? It would be awkward to get to the end of the year having strung along multiple girls the whole time. I want to max out as many social links as I can, but it would feel scummy to have the MC flirt with Chief, say, not to mention out of character.

Also,I said the wrong thing to Ai and now the moon arcana is turned upside down. I have never seen this before. I didn't know it could happen.

You always have the option to stay friends, so don't worry about maxing out the S. Links with the others. However, your interactions do change a little bit in the main storyline depending on your relationship with those characters. I can't remember all the slight changes off the top of my head but there's some, but the biggest one is a story scene later on where depending who you're with, the scene will play out differently. Being in a relationship with all of them will definitely result in something at some point.

As for Ai, that's the S. Link becoming reversed. It can happen in few occasions in Persona 4 (it was much more common in Persona 3, depending on how long you hadn't hung out with someone, if you were in multiple relationships, etc.) You can unreverse them with time.

Perhaps not on your first playthrough, but there's a really funny scene when you try to romance multiple ladies.

Just an update to let you guys know that I maxed out the Yukiko social link. Her persona now nulls fire natively which is very cool. I am very close to maximum on a few other S-links, so I look forward to seeing what they unlock.

The scene in the MC's room with Yukiko is awkward and cute. I found myself aww'ing through most of it.

Yup, I chose Yuki my first time and I don't regret it.

What I love about it is that it captures the gut-wrenching nervous feeling of teenage romance perfectly, where you're trying to make a move, but your nerves and inexperience hold you back from saying what you need to say and make it all come out totally wrong. Then there's the tentative first kiss at the end, and it's never a great kiss, but fills you with a mixture of relief, joy and a tiny bit of trepidation. Several times during the run uo, I was like "It's alright, just breathe. It'll all be okay," the performance was that convincing.

The voice actress for Yukiko absolutely killed it.
