Man, I don't think many artists fell off my radar as much as Lupe. I loved F&L/The Cool but then completely stopped listening. Not even out of hate or anything, I just completely ignored it for whatever reason.

I'll give this a listen, but low expectations.

Same for me. Granted I listened to A LOT more new music in college than I do now but Lupe was my shit for a while, but didn't really dig lasers and haven't listened to him at all since. Gonna give this a shot.

Is it amazing? No

Is it a huge step up from political Lupe? Hell yes

It might not be F&L or the Cool, but it's light years beyond the shit he's recently dropped.

People don't like Adoration of the Magi? I liked it better than Madonna honestly, but I don't think I'm analyzing it like you guys are.

Not a fan of the hook, although it's pretty clever.

Why you ready to die? You just a baby
Why them tears up under your eyes? You just a baby
Keep your head up in the sky, you just a baby
Quit chasing money, never mind, you just a baby
Why you wanna be born again? You just a baby
Why you playing in the streets? You just a baby

Just listened to Mural. Is this real life? Is Lupe back?

One of my favorite tracks on the album. It's amazing and I still don't completely understand it.

Edit: and the baby lines as posted above are just pure genius.

IMO T&Y=The Cool>F&L>>>>F&L 2>>>>>>>>>>Lasers

If you were ever a Lupe fan I don't know why you would not like this record. It has better production, just as much storytelling and lyrics on par if not better than his first 2 albums. If you never really liked him all I can say is you were never going to like him regardless what he does. The sound is completely different, but it is a good evolution. Honestly I think a lot of people just joined a circle jerk when LASERS dropped. I only got back into hip hop and Lupe recently and listened to a lot of loosies and songs over the course of the last year and was not disappointed at all. SLR 2 made me take notice.

I purposely haven't watched or listened to any of those videos from this album. I'm saving my ears for midnight release in an hour.

Please deliver, Lu.

So far I like Mural and Prisoners. I usually don't like more than a handful of tracks on any given album though. Still have a few to listen to.

How is it too late if you think the tracks sound good now? How does that make sense?

because I've outgrown his music? I can appreciate this as a 2007 lupe fan, and be like damn this would've been an amazing sequel to the cool, but then I realize its fucking 2015 and this album becomes increasingly mediocre.

recent album wise or just music?

Lupe's been dropping really good verses and good songs for the past several years....

so verdict is that it's okay. so many years too late lupe, sorry. better than 2014 forest hills drive though.

The verdict so far is that it is great. A lot of people believe if it dropped in 2014 it would have arguably been the best album, Top 5 for sure. Also this "too late" thing makes no sense. If somebody has a few off years we just discredit the great work the do late? Makes no sense.

He just want to hate he said he "outgrew" Lupe...

I remember listening to all the 1st and 15 mixtapes thinking "man.. this guy and Papoose gonna be the future...".

Mural is straight fire tho.

His best album imo.

Wouldn't recommend this for a first time Lupe Fiasco listener though. You need to elevate yourself to this album.

Listen to the album in reverse ;)

Another issue I had with the album was pacing. Three 8+ minute tracks, totalling to 78 minutes. He could have done without Chopper and one of the Nikki Jean songs (probably No Scratches), especially since they come one after another.

I'd also cut Mural down in half, but y'all seem to dig the whole "bar-spitting marathon" thing he's got going with it.

Yeah some people just go in with the intention to hate already in there minds. I mean if I don't particularly like an album I am not going to say it is bad or average when the consensus is saying it is good. I wasn't really into RTJ but it was a great album, just not for me. Also I didn't know FHD was starting to get hate, when it leaked people were singing its praises, I can only come to the conclusion that critic reviews turned them against the album. After all that happens with videogames all the time, before reviews its the best thing ever and as soon as those are not glowing a large subset of gamers join a hate train against a game without ever playing it.

You said this in GAF-Hop too, and it still confuses me. There's no objectivity involved with music; even if the consensus says it's good, I can still come out and hate it and say it's bad. It doesn't matter if you think it's competent. Music is one of the most subjective mediums out there.

Which is ironic since you're saying critics are swaying those people, when you're the one holding the "consensus" and their opinions with more weight.

I do think there's a certain level of objective appreciation that's possible. Like, there are albums that I know are good and can perceive "they did a damn good thing," but they don't hit me on a substantial level. Does that mean I think the product is bad? Not necessarily.

But that isn't an all the time thing either--like you said, sometimes you just straight up disagree with everyone else and view an otherwise highly regarded project as trash. Honestly, it depends a lot on the listener, what they're listening for, and how they're listening for it.

I believe that in art there is a certain level of objectivity, it's my personal belief just as you have yours, I am not telling you what to believe. Maybe I should have said "imo", but you are free to believe in things your way. Just because something is not good to me I shouldn't say that everybody has to say "imo" this is a great game/record/movie" GTA 5 and The Last of Us are well received, there is a consensus, if someone doesn't like those games they are free to hold there views, but they are "great" games, a few people's opinions don't change that imo.

FHD I am saying that many people don't judge for themselves, they are influenced by others, if you have heard that album you can judge it based on its personal merits. Going back to gaming a lot of people trash games, consoles, etc without ever having experience with it. Multiplayer only? Trash DLC? Trash etc.

If you want to talk more pm me, I've already gotten off topic enough and don't want to mess up this thread further.

On topic: Copping 2 copies, digital and physical, going to support good music.

another song with chris brown got cut. Mazinger wouldn't have really fit in tetsuo imo.

You dont think so? I felt it would since im assuming he's going for japanese elements (the Akira reference in the title for one)

Glad that brown track got cut, because lupe featuring chris brown would have ground my gears to insane levels.

that's such a great song. I always thought Mazinger/Haile/Lillies was building on his "Lost in the Atlantic" mixtape...but apparently it was never a mixtape.

Mazinger is greaaaaat. The intro and outro especially.
