Mac GAF Gather, OS X Tiger Talk

Anyone go to the event at one of the retail stores? Not as busy as expected. They did show off the 1080p trailer on the screen which was pretty sweet :p

Has anybody with a Powerbook (Mine is a 1.5 Ghz 15") noticed that their laptop is running hotter than it used to? I'm guessing it has to do with the new 3D effects like the dashboard ripple?

I dunno what I was thinking... I meant *install* not DL. My bad! :)

Right now I'm trying to figure out how to get QTPro back... I purchased Pro 6... should this not give me free upgrade to Pro 7? Thought I read that I had free upgrades FOREVER now.

Some general thoughts on my part:

Dashboard:

Compared to Konfabulator... I don't know. I still feel like Dashboard has yet to really become completely intigrated into the OS like it will be in the next few months. There are some nice, useful widgets available at launch... but I am sure there will be plenty more that will make our favorite app more useful. That said, I am a bit disappointed. I was hoping that it would NOT be stand alone app that I would have to actually "load" everytime I wanted to view a widget. Having it running constantly on my desktop would have been ideal... but for those of us who do not have F12 set as our eject button do get to enjoy a simple push of the button to see our widgets. A small gripe... but a gripe none-the-less. I've also run into a couple of problems of loading other widgets... I've clicked on certain widgets in the widgets bar only to find that dashboard "minimizes." Upon bringing it back up I found that a widget I had open had now closed and erased my info that I had entered. Could have been the widget's fault... I don't know.

Spotlight:

Fast. Sleek. Effective. Not only is it great to have everything simply broken down for you by application type (mail, photo, docs, etc.) but the fact that it also "reads" all your documents is going to be a big help (imagine if this thing read .pdfs! Ah well!) I heard some complaints about the hotkey being Apple+Space... but I don't see the problem especially since the hotkeys are customizable. I haven't had a real use, yet, for Spotlight... but I know I will and it will change the way we search for stuff on our computers forever. This will be standard on all OSes for the rest of our lives.

OS's speed:

There is a slight speed jump. I've heard similar on many fronts... it runs slightly smoother than Panther did. This really isn't a terribly big deal, however, I do take some happiness in knowing that this OS is "better" than the last one in the speed category... know what I mean? It's not noticable on all fronts... but it just seems like everything is responding a tad quicker. Just good to know.

QT7:

Not really a Tiger observation... but I'm a tad miffed. Running a 12" PB G4... I got gipped The new codec (designed specifically with HD playback in mind) was not designed with G4s in mind. That being said, after having tried to watch both the Fantastic 4 and Batman trailers in high def with QT7... it was choppy and, overall, unviewable. It's disappointing... but I am sure those of you running a G5 with a nice screen will be able to appreciate just precisely what this program (and codec) was created for.

I've only had a few hours with it... but I am enjoying it. I'm fairly new to the world of RSS and I really would like to get into it before I comment on the RSS capablities of Safari. I was on ESPN and the RSS feed did pop up... I clicked it right away and the ability to see, exactly, what news articles were available to me was a major plus. Again, I need to play around with it some more... but I like it.

There is PLENTY that I am missing... If anyone has found any websites that make Tiger better (friend of mine found a website that has a prog that makes Mail look a little more attractive... I don't know the site but once I do... I'll post it) please so supply the links for the sites.

Apple Jax:

Just because you had QTpro 6 doesn't mean you get QTpro 7. Apple said at MacWorld that you'll need to purchase a new pro license. It's also printed on the side of Tiger's box.

As for dashboard, why not just change the keybinding, or set it to a hot corner instead? My F12 key is free (eject and F12 are seperate on my 15" powerbook), so I use either that or the top left corner of my screen.

My only issue with Dashboard is that the little calander widget isn't integrated into iCal. WTF!?

As of writing my QT post... I did some more research on the whole thing... just to see what the deal was (I'm not the only one who is a little miffed over the whole situation)... but whatever... that sucks. I can, however, downgrade if I want to utilize the "Pro" functions. I'm not sure what I will do just yet.

My gripe with QT right now is the fact that anything aspected in widescreen format is choppy as hell... in fact... just about impossible to view (I'm currently running VLC in order to view widescreen aspected videos... annoying... I wanna use QT).

With Dashboard... yeah my F12 key is free as well and I'm more than happy to use it for "hotkeying." Again... I just wish it was "integrated" into the desktop like Konfabulator had it.

Not to rub it in Apple Jax, but 1080p video looks outstanding in QT7, smooth as silk...but then again I've got 2 G5s sitting in my PowerMac.

Tiger's a lot faster on my machine than 10.3.9 was. Start-up and wake-up is a *ton* faster. I've gone back to using Safari since the RSS integration's so nice, and it's a tad bit faster as well. The Wikipedia widget crashes my Dashboard whenever I look something up. I had no idea what the fuss was about the RSS screensaver until I loaded it up. Hawt.

And that's what I hear... it's awesome on G5s... but it kind of leaves me in the shitter... you know? (running my little G4 in my PB) I'm not the only one having this problem, though. I'm currently on the QT discussion boards of the Apple site to see if I can sort this out further. It sucks. I LOVE QT and having it not operate properly is pretty annoying. I really want it to work :/

Spotlight DOES read .pdf's, completley. It finds content inside of it and highlights it for you if you select it.

Yep... I was corrected on another forum as well :) AMAZES ME... lol (Tested it out myself, as well... great shit.)

And now that I think about it... I think Steve Jobs actually mentioned it in his keynote... I'm an idiot.

So am I the only one who's Powerbook is running hotter on Tiger than it was on Panther? It's almost as hot as it gets when I play World of Warcraft.

So does Google Desktop Search for WinXP... what's the big deal? Especially considering PDF is built into the OSX core whereas with WinXP it isn't.

I have a dual 2.5 G5 w/6800 Ultra and I've noticed quite a bit more disk activity and slow downs than Panther. My conjecture right now is that in Panther I was right on the edge of using all my wired memory, and with the addition of dashboard (which is taking up ~175mb at any given time) it put me over the edge and so I'm paging in/out a lot.

Solution? Ordered another GB of RAM (currently have 1GB) and it should be here this week.

Don't even begin to try raining on Spotlight's parade, let alone comparing it to Google desktop search. The two are so far apart it's not even funny.

I'm not, but scanning PDFs shouldn't be considered amazing.

My F12 key is set for ejecting disks, but I set Widgits up to F8 and it works just as well. The pictures of the weather is a nice touch on the weather widgit.

Also why did they remove your ability to show/hide all your mailboxes and folders in Apple mail? Now it looks like a generic copy of Entourage. The show/hide was one of my favorite things in older versions of Apple mail. WTF APPLE!!!

They didn't remove it, they just took the mailboxes out a side-pane and finally put them as part of the main window, where they belong. If you want to remove them, customize your toolbar and drag up the "Mailboxes" button. Pressing it will toggle the mailboxes on and off.

Cmd + Shift + M also works.

I actually tried to do exactly that when I first installed Tiger... but I didn't notice the "mailboxes" icon in the cusomize toolbar selections. Thanks StrikerObi.

Did you pre-order from Apple? Call them up and tell them. They will compensate for not getting Tiger to you on time. You can get either iLife or iWork '05 or a $30 credit to the Apple onine store.

Recommended Hardware Configurations for H.264 High Definition (HD) Playback

To play high definition video, a large amount of data must be processed by your computer. A powerful system will deliver the best playback experience.
For 1280x720 (720p) video at 24-30 frames per second:

* 1.8 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer
* At least 256 MB of RAM
* 64 MB or greater video card

For 1920x1080 (1080p) video at 24-30 frames per second:

* Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 or faster Macintosh computer
* At least 512 MB of RAM
* 128 MB or greater video card

I see now what I asked earlier was a stupid question. QT Pro only lets you edit and create movies, not play them. I also see that QT 7 is not yet available for PC. Can a PC user expect QT 7 to include all of the above features? Because quite frankly, that's the first time I've ever been excited by QT.

I don't really get what the big deal with the RSS screensaver is. I'm never at my computer to see my screensaver so putting headlines to read on it seems a bit pointless to me :-P

And I'm still in love with Dashboard. I have my extra three mouse buttons set for the three Exposé functions right now but I think I'm going to have to change one to stick Dashboard on it!

Check your power management settings. It may be set for the new setting "Better performance" which means that it will run full clock all the time even when it doesn't have to.

Dashboard taking up ~175MB of memory is strange actually. Do you have very large number of widgets open? Dashboard is actually a sleeping background process as are all of its widgets until you bring dashboard to the foreground (you can check this is activity viewer) so they shouldn't be doing anything when dashboard is in the back.

Some of those widgets take up a TON of memory. My stocks widget is totally at the default -- no extra settings, and being a Sunday the market is closed so it shouldn't be updating -- and Activity Monitor says it alone is taking up a whopping 40MB (more than Entourage!). The Wikipedia widget doing 38MB I can understand more. The Calculator swallowing up 18MB I can't :-)

For real? You think this would work even if I got it with the student discount?

Interesting. Mine has stocks in it and is only taking 23. Weather is taking another 23. Dictionary and iTunes are taking 3 a piece. Considering how lightweight these apps are supposed to be (they are just front end displays with light networking functions), I wonder if we can expect the memory usage to drop considerably when they link more functionality into the Dashboard process instead of requiring each app to link in stuff itself.

Out of curiousity, how much RAM do you have?

There are quite a few Widget resources floating about now. If you want to develop your own Widget, Apple has a small Developer Overview on what a Widget is made of at http://developer.apple.com/macosx/dashboard.html

Here are a few Widget links:

http://www.dashboardwidgets.com/ ~ Has a ton of Widgets, even a Penny Arcade Widget!
http://www.widgetdeveloper.com/ ~ Smaller Widget download site
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/dashboard/ ~ Official Apple Dashboard download Site

I also edited a few Widgets available from the Apple site, both of these Widgets did not have an official icon for Dashboard, so I made icons for them.

http://www.motorde.com/Snake.zip ~ Snake game, enough said. New spiffy icon by me!
http://www.motorde.com/Capture.zip ~ Screen capture Widget. Custom Icon added as well.

I also edited the official Tile Game that comes with Tiger. It's now a photo of Trent Reznor.
http://www.motorde.com/NIN.zip

Editing the Tile Game is rather easy, just use Spotlight and search for Tile Game, then hold "control" and click and select "Show Package Contents", then you can edit the .png image files to your liking.

XD

But is that actually coming out, and will it suck ass like the current Windows Quicktime player?

No, it's not coming out. Apple decided to drop Windows support.

Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer. See how that works?

Or you could drag your own picture in there

The reason for the heat increase may be because the Quartz 2d extreme technology makes more thorough use of the graphics card--just like playing WoW. See the Ars Technica analysis of Quartz 2d extreme for more specific info.

The translation widget sucks balls as it is slow as hell. I may have to build something myself off of edict.
Spotlight has floored me, the only thing I wish is there was a hot-key to step between categories, never-mind, just found it, haha. Goodbye butler!
People keep talking about the dictionary, but I'm not seeing ctrl-cmd-D doing anything.

Okay, so holding option lets you close widgets.

And apparently there is a way to get the widget to stay on the desktop when you hide away the dashboard, but I can't get that to work.
