Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

The X in OS X stopped being a stand in for "10" a long time ago. At this point OS X is like the word Windows, it is the brand.

You will see OS X version 11.1.1 (or 10.11.1) before you see an OS XI. That name will never happen.

maybe they'll pull a double reverse, bringing back the "Mac" and dropping the "X".
so future versions will be:

Mac OS - "marketing name"

and version numbers will be in small print in the "about this mac" box and that's it.

Won't it be released alongside WWDC? That's in early June, so I don't see how it couldn't come out in late June (which is next month).

There's a chance it'll be released next month, along side shiny new hardware.

But, we'll see.

What I can see happening is a release of 10.8, and a preview of iOS 6.

As said, we're going to see a feature complete Developer Preview at WWDC, likely with new features we haven't seen in the DPs yet, and then a few weeks or a month or so until the final version. So early to late July would be a pretty safe target.

Of course, I would love to see it sooner, if it is ready. :)

Wouldn't they want to release their new hardware with the new version of OS X pre-installed? So it makes sense they would announce hardware shipping on day xx with ML packed in. We know new hardware is coming really soon so it would make sense for ML to be shipped sooner rather than later.

I think it all depends on when the new MBP's actually come out. Obviously those won't be released without ML on them. Not sure how soon after a WWDC MB announcement they'll release, though.

If they go full on reveal of Mountain and iOS6 at WWDC, it would be fitting to do hardware reveal a month or 45 days later. Would give them enough time to get a DP out and about and fix the last few things and enough space btween the reveals to build up hype again.

And then we get another lull and then full on iPhone 5 in october.

I predict new MBP at WWDC to release within a week (two max) of the key note, ML new developer preview released that day, and new MB Airs will launch in July- August latest day and date with ML.

They don't want to miss back to school MBP purchases by waiting for ML. They could offer ML as a free upgrade to anyone who buys the new MBP before ML releases.

Edit: it's clear from all the leaks that MBP is done and ready to go. ML is not so they are not going to hold back the hardware.

Yep, agreed on all counts. MacBook Pro (along with iMac) in June, MacBook Air in July/August to be launched day and date with Mountain Lion.

Mac Pro...lol. The lack of even one single ivy bridge rumor about it makes it more and more obvious the thing is deader than dead.

If they re doing annual releases for OS X updates, they are going to have to get away fro the cat moniker, I'd think

Beyond that, everything they've shown looks awesome, just summer for now?

I just downloaded the Mountain Lion update. Prior to the update I had 30 junk icons on Launchpad from Adobe's creative suite.

Post update: Zero.

Bliss.

Any word on what is in the update?
Not much, mostly just bug fixes. Things are pretty quick and stable right now. They could easily ship this in a month. I don't think we'll be seeing anything new anymore unless they have something left for WWDC.

iCloud open dialogs have been polished up. They now state "iCloud for X" and have an iCloud app icon.

iCloud still only supports one level of hierarchy though. Folder within a folder isn't happening until they can come up with something better than the iOS folder UI. List view supports multiple hierarchy levels, but it's disabled in the iCloud dialog because it has to support both the iOS and list view UI. I could see this being fine for documents I need to store quickly or for regular simpletons, but for serious work I'll have to continue using Dropbox.

The regular local dialog is still there at least.

This was a 10.6 feature that was removed in 10.7. Zooming PDFs in quick look is back.

Can you also zoom in on image previews as you could pre-Lion? Anyway, iCloud is going to be so fucking useful. Really a key stepping stone to merging the Mac and iDevice experiences.

Weird that the On My mac and iCloud interfaces look different. They really like that texture. The iCloud interface also doesn't have column view or cover flow, which is too bad. Not being able to have folders in folders is stupid. I'll stick with drop box.

Any other notable changes? I know its mainly bug fixes.

I get where they're trying to go with iCloud but man do they need to think up a better system; I don't think taking the traditional desktop file system and thrusting it into the cloud like Dropbox/G-Drive is the right way but this sure as hell isn't either.

What happens if you go into the actual local system folder where the iCloud files are stored with Finder and created a folder within a folder manually? How would it show up in the iCloud dialog?

You will see OS X version 11.1.1 (or 10.11.1) before you see an OS XI. That name will never happen.

Jobs went on about how the OSX move was supposed to set up Apple for the next 20 years. They're currently in year 12 of OSX, so they don't have much longer to go before they will probably start work on a completely new OS and stay within his original prediction.

Interesting how MS got scared away from naming their OSes while Apple pretty much treats OSX as just the letters and the 'X' to indicate it's the successor to OS9 doesn't mean much anymore, and started emphasizing the name over the version.

Is there any actual chance that they will just create a whole new desktop OS or a desktop version of iOS in the future? I can't see how they could scrap all the OS X baggage and start anew.

I really don't think that is their plan, especially considering Tim Cook's recent Toaster-Fridge comment about Windows 8. I think they realize that there are necessary differences between a mobile and desktop OS.

Edit: Reading your comment again I think I kinda read too much into it. If you mean in terms of UI I could definitely see that happening.

Eh, I think you are missing some of the context. When Jobs was pitching OS X (NeXTSTEP technologies) to Mac developers/users he was trying to assure them that Apple wouldn't jump to yet another technology/OS like they had aimlessly been doing for the 7 years prior. OS X will out last that 20 years suggested, and is just a very small estimation of how long we will be with OS X. Even if we get a new name, which is doubtful at the time being, it will still be an OS based around a Mach microkernel, with a BSD personality layer, coded in ObjC (for high level user orientated apps), using objectes derived from NSObject, being rendered in window system backed by something derived from DPS/Display PDF - Quartz.

Unless there are some major breakthroughs in CS departments that are incompatible with Unix and unix like operating systems, I don't see this changing at all. Expect to still be using OS X (or at least the technologies derived from) in 2050.

They will get closer and closer in terms of UI. I don't see them outright dropping OS X and replacing it with iOS on Macs.

As for a whole new desktop OS... maybe? OS X seems to be doing pretty well for them. Easier to update than create from scratch, I'd imagine.

And yes, it's a higher build number than the update that *just* went out to Developer Preview 3, like, yesterday.

Weird.

Not too weird, Apple's internal testing is a few weeks ahead of their Developer Previews. DP4 could be the branch they want to use at WWDC and need to get it out there as soon as possible for testing.

Nothing has shown up for me yet. What's its build ID?

BTW, This 3rd release of DP3 is SMOOOOOTH. I think they even redid the Finder's icon rendering, it's pretty crystal clear. I see very few graphical glitches, just a couple in the Dock (and of course Safari) every now and again.

I'm gonna wait to see if DP4 is as stable as DP3 before installing it, but I'll be curious to find out what's changed and improved in it.
