Since 10.6.0 was released, the longest date between releases was 148 days between 10.6.4 and 10.6.5.

We're currently at 139 days between the initial 10.8.2 release and today.

Not to derail but considering OS X updates are now annual I expect to see fewer big changes with the upcoming iteration.

same. yearly revisions means small, iterative changes for a desktop OS. There's not a lot of big stuff they can do without reworking the whole OS. and, at that point, they'll come out one year with a new OS name and push it hard. but I don't think that will be for 5 years at minimum. probably longer

10.7 was the big "Let's make your Mac as easy to use as your iPad" update and 10.8 expanded on that. I think it was fine. For $20 a pop they can put them out once a year and I'll buy them. Plus you can skip ones you don't care for and wait for the next version next year. It's better than paying $100-300 for a copy of Windows even once every 4 years.

Cannot wait to see what 10.9 and iOS7 bring. Kinda wish they'd show off iOS7 at the same time as a preview with the real developers stuff being at WWDC. Apple's really getting their asses kicked by Android and they really need to assure the people on the edge that they're still on the ball. Or that they're not.

10.7 ran like junk on my iMac. It was unbearably bad at points. 10.8 is smooth sailing. Although, my HDD died right before 10.8 came out so that may also factor into my view.

Aliases follow the target if you move it between volumes, don't they? But I was really surprised to see how big they were after reading your post.
Yeah, that's the one benefit to Aliases. But still, it seems like a lot of space for a file that performs one purpose. It's storing way too much redundant data. Even after removing the custom icon it's still 4MB in my case. I've had ones that were just 1MB. All pointing to various folders. It makes no real sense to be so inconsistent.

Symlinks for the win! The only drawback to a Symlink though is no colored label.

So Mac OS X blocked Flashplayer.

The adobe get flash website downloads a file called "AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller_11_aih.dmg". This is different than what Adobe normally deliver (what does "aih" stand for?).

Further, it is only 879 KB, whereas the link specifies that the file will be 16 MB.

What gives?

Also, I think this means ads are disabled on NeoGAF (Don't ban me!).

Update to the newest version.

As I asid I went to download, but not sure what the file adobe is giving me, it's not a full installer - does it run an installer to get it from the web? Is it just a patch? Just wanted to confirm that they have changed their delivery method...

Wow. Ban this filth.

It would be appropriate that my Apple fanboy nature be my downfall on Gaf.

Maybe, hmm...

In any case, just install it. Boom, unblocked.

Hmm Maybe. Not really in the habit if running/installing files that are not what they say is downloading.

I wonder if it's because flash is blocked that makes it get this file?
I got the same message. I updated using that <1MB .dmg and it's fine now.

It's directly from Adobe, no need to worry...

Asking for wifi password or mail passwords?

Check to see if your keychain has the passwords saved correctly. I do get occasionally issues where keychain forgets certain passwords. It's intermittent though. It's possible the password (for mail)is not saved at all, prompting to renter password every time you get a new connection.

I'm looking forward to seeing what 10.9 is about. I skipped 10.8 because i had just purchased an iMac about 6 months before it was out and was still getting used to Lion.

I've seen people mentioning 10.8 fixing problems from Lion; i haven't discovered anything in the year and half of use so far; does the whole OS run quicker or are there more notable problems people have discovered?

Also, is it easy to upgrade without deleting any personal files (music/movies/games etc) - the only time i've done an upgrade was leopard to snow leopard on a 2007 macbook and that was five years after having bought it so i just deleted or moved everything and performed a clean install. I know its possible but i wonder is it just better to back up everything and start a clean install or will it run just as quick regardless?

I've pretty much upgraded in place duri most updates and haven't seen many issues. Mountain lion runs a little faster than lion I feel (I have a really old mac), but i get more bugs and hangs - it feels it's just slightly more resource hungry than my machine can manage.

But generally, I've had little issue from upgrading in place.

As for 10.9, I imagine some Siri integration.

It's the mail password. I'll check on the keychain business. Thanks!

Yeah, your passwords should be saved under your login keychain.

Best place to check though is in mail - right click on your yahoo account and edit account - the password should be there for sending and receiving.

Also, Mail can be fickle. IMAP accounts require a log in to stay connected, and it's possible mail is just a bit slow to do the login and if you give it time, it might actually complete. I've heard of a lot of people have issues in the past with Yahoo and Mail.

Thanks, i might give it a go. I don't care for the social media aspects that were added but if its a bit quicker it will be worth it

I'll be more interested in under the hood improvements in 10.9. Feature-wise, I'm pretty happy with where we're at. I would just like to see better APIs to allow developers to better take advantage of hardware again, and in my dreams, GPU-drivers that are actually competitive with Windows drivers.

I want an usable multi-monitor implementation of Mission Control and the fullscreen mode. Be it a revised MC or something completely new, doesn't matter. Spaces & Exposé were perfect.

But we'll probably get Siri, Maps and a 200 item bullet point list with "new features" they pulled right out of their asses.

yea, multi monitor fullscreen support would be nice. It's obviously not a high priority for apple but it has been a while since Lion came out so I think there's been plenty of time to get to it.

I'd like to see the app store (both mac and ios) support paid major upgrades. that can help devs and users.

I don't really have many wishes for Mac OS. I like the mountain lion iOS additions more than the lion ones. A lot of the little niggling issues (resizing window edges; safari performance, extensions, syncing and search bar UI; Mail app performance) have been improved the last couple years.

I still want all the skeomorphic skinned apps to go back to a more neutral appearance. I find the side lists in reminders to be hard to read.

Maybe they'll add something like window snapping so that people wouldn't need to add a third party app for it.

If you have no Flash/Flash blocker/disabled Flash plugin installed at all you see image banner ads most of the time (have no Flash installed on my MacBook Air). The request to the ad-vendor says "I have Flash installed!" and then once the Flash code is put on the website the browser says "nope, no Flash allowed!".

Makes sense. So I guess the ad is still sort of 'getting through' (ad revenue wise), I just don't see it? Or does it require to actually be seen and send a response before it counts? I guess it depends on how the ad is programmed.

At any rate I used the aih version to update.

First Developer Preview for Lion was released Feb 24th 2011; Mountain Lion Feb 16th 2012; both Thursdays. Seem likely, we'll get 10.9 DP1 this Thursday or next.

I wonder how they're gonna call the version after 10.9.

OS XI? I kinda don't think so.
OS X 10.10? Even more unlikely.

I'm surprised they dropped the "Mac" from Mac OS X. Wouldn't it have made more sense to drop the X instead? In this way, they could continue the Mac OS <some name> naming scheme. And the computers are still called Macs, after all. So it would make sense to keep the "Mac". I can't imagine them renaming the computers in the future.

Though on the other hand, how would they address minor updates? They would still need to display a version number somewhere.

edit: Two afterthoughts.
1) Maybe it's to avoid possible confusion with the old, pre-X Mac OS.
2) If the speculations about a completely new interface for both OS X and iOS designed by Jonathan Ive are true, the I could imagine them going to OS XI. As for iOS.. I don't know. "The New iOS"? Nah.

I feel like we get into this once a month. The X in OS X stopped meaning ten a long time ago.

it doesn't matter if they make the version number 10.11 or 11.0.
It will still be called OS X

Feeling prescient :p

There's nothing wrong with OS X 10.10.

Their major problem is running out of cats.

I can imagine them rehashing a name, and adding a II.

OS X 10.9 Mountain Lion II.

OS X 10.10 Snow Leopard II.

OS X 10.11 Snow Lion

OS X 10.12 Mountain Leopard

OS X 10.13 Mountain Lion III

I finally installed Bootcamp on my 2012 MBA 13". Made a 30 gigs partition on which I only intended to install Windows and Phantasy Star Online 2.

The problem is that after installing Windows and updating it, I'm left with less than 2 gigs of hard drive space! Is that really normal?

Checking the partition with Daisy, I realized there were two HUGE hidden system files (pagefile.sys, 8.5 gigs and hiberfil.sys, 6,4 gigs), and find it hard to believe they should be that big after hearing several times than 30 gigs for bootcamp was "okay"...

I think it might be because I'm using totalfinder, but...

on my iMac at home, running Mountain Lion, my preview doesn't seem to work well. Sometimes I'll press space and it'll just come up blank when I've got an image selected, or sometimes it'll open but as I scroll up and down through images/files it won't update the preview. And sometimes videos or tunes won't play when I open the preview. The files are all fine when I open them up in the regular software.

Is this likely to be totalfinder's fault? It'd hope not, since I really love tabs in my finder...
