Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

Mount the DMG Firefox came in.

Drag the application to your Applications folder (In the hard drive)

Boom. It's installed. You can unmount the image and delete the DMG.

That's how you install a large percentage of Mac apps. The tiny rest of them use actual installers. They will always say "install" on them. The rest are installed via drag and drop.
Isn't Firefox on of those apps where the DMG folder actually visually indicates to you to move the app into the Applications folder? With a shortcut to the folder and all? I'm kinda surprised that some people don't get it, though some apps make it even more explicit.

If someone has the Finder setup to not open new windows when opening folders, and they keep everything in column view, then this may not show up.

Either way, the idea of virtual disk images is complex. dragging and dropping is easy but the concept of mounting an invisible disk that doesn't exist is strange. When my sister got her first Mac around 5 years ago (she was 10) she ran camino as her browser from the disk image for months. Parents had no idea why it was so slow, either...

thankfully, more apps are getting distributed as zip files now. unzip, then run anywhere. place in applications folder if you want to tidy up.

and, yeah, Mac App Store solves this for a lot of users, too.

The most baffling thing about the DMG install process for me is that mounted DMGs open in a new window under everything else with no indication that they've opened, and then there's no way to unmount the DMG from its own window, you have to open a second Finder window. Why.

Traditionally you could trash the desktop icon.

Or just hit command-e

Thanks, I'll probably use this in the future. Still, when something like this is relegated to a keyboard shortcut, you end up with most users having a bunch of mounted DMGs that they had no idea were still open. Especially on laptops where people rarely, if ever shut down. So many times I've looked at someone's Mac and found a bunch of installer DMGs still mounted.
I imagine Apple's not going to do anything to simplify it, though, since they want to push installation through the App Store.

Oh, right. Though I was pretty sure with the more recent releases of OS X and their insistence on ignoring user view settings in Finder, it would open in whatever default is stored in the DMG regardless.

I know I set all my defaults to column or list view and random folders still open in icon view and for me at least, pretty much all app DMGs open in list view regardless of my settings.

Finder is out of control in that respect and seems to be getting worse.

Whenever I try to insert a question mark, it sort of acts as a deselect. For example, when I do this in Messages, it minimises the chat window. When I do this on the Twitter app, it takes me off the text box.

Does anyone experience something similar?

OpenGL improvements!

I hope it's about OS X. I really want to see if Apple's been buckling down these past 9 months. OS X is great, but needs more integration. And iOS, which we won't even see until June/July needs to have a lot of new shit to bring all the abandoners back, or at least make them think it's relevant again.

Which I think says good things about how different it may be as well as how aligned it is with iOS which they'll show at the same time.

Yep. While I'm a bit impatient to see the next major release, I'd rather it be later if it means having a lot more new features and improvements.

It could also signal there they have some major new features that's coming to both OS X and iOS that they don't want to show in OS X just yet because it'd spoil it for when they announce it for iOS.

But that's just speculation. Don't want to get my hopes too high. :p

Unlikely. I think they'll stick to the pattern of unveiling OS X in early spring, then unveiling iOS in early summer around the same time OS X gets released.
I want to believe this, but the other plan seems to make sense. Where they show them both off at WWDC for developers, have them both integrated so well with each other so features can be added at the same time in sync, then release them side by side in the fall.

I mean it makes sense really. But it's so far off so I want to believe we'll get some tastes before then.

10.9 supposedly has Siri and Apple Maps. Dunno about anything that isn't already in iOS.

Didn't apple invite the press in secret last year in like February to talk about Mountain Lion? I remember the announcement coming out of nowhere.

Since I updated to 10.8.3 each time I start I get the cuda drivers window telling me that an update is required.

But it hasn't been updated since last year! Does anyone know how to deactivate this message?

I think the first anyone knew about it was when it suddenly appeared on Apple's website.

At the risk of speaking too soon, I haven't yet seen the updated Safari garble an animated GIF like it's been doing since Mountain Lion came out. Fingers crossed it stays fixed.

Anyway of showing my ipad on my macbook?

I teach at a university, and during the lessons I have my macbook setup to the projector to show ppt.

I'd like to show students work on the projector using the ipad camera. Is this possible? Not recording the video or streaming it online. Just having the camera view on the macbook either by wifi or blutooth.

Lets you display anything on your iPad's screen by using your Mac as an AirPlay receiver.

Finally, finally figured out the beachballs on my partner's MacBook Pro.

She had a VMWare Fusion 4 version from before Mountain Lion came out. Updated to the latest (4.1.4) and everything is fine. She only uses the Windows VM a few times a year, so I also turned off the helper app from her login items.

Thanks for posting. Few people actually post resolutions to their issues. I don't have any such issue but i think it's valuable to give possible solutions online.

It irks me when people post an issue, then figure it out and just edit in a 'resolved!' Without stating what fixed it.

Well, I'd posted about this as an on-going thing a few times over the past four months, and think I'd posted that I was in the midst of solving it ages ago. There was also a concern of mine that the Fusion Drive was causing it, since I wasn't involved in troubleshooting until after I'd built it; she merely said it was slow, much slower than her iPad, and I figured the 5400 RPM 2.5" drive was to blame and ordered some SSDs and went to town.

Oh, for the Google robots: VMWare Fusion 4.1.2 and Mac OS X 10.8 cause constant spinning beachballs of death across the entire UI.

I wish the Messges app was more comprehensive on the Mac; for example, the ability to search chat history via date, or find all attachments sent/received with each contact rather than manually searching for it in folders

Yeah. Messages should really sync completely with iPhone messages for people who also have iPhones. Right now it's flakey when it doesn't always work.

Hey guys....anyone willing to help an old Snow Leopard user out? I hope I'm in the right thread. I don't really see any other active Mac OS X threads...

I want to wipe my computer and do a fresh install of Snow Leopard. My only concern in doing this would losing my iPhoto Library and my iTunes Library.

If I simply copy the iTunes Library folder and iPhoto Library folder to an external harddrive, would that be okay? How could I bring this back over so that my iTunes and iPhoto pictures are brought back exactly as I left them? Is this possible?

Finally got rid of all traces of Office for Mac from my machine. It only took a 10 step process (seriously).

Now the segregation is complete. Mac apps on mac. Windows on Parallels.

Copy them to an external, and after the fresh install, copy them back.

That's really all? It will automatically work with iTunes and iPhoto? No additional set up?

If so, that's amazing.

You may have to point them to the libraries the first time, but yeah, pretty much.

Make sure with Itunes you are grabbing the whole folder and not just the media folder. You will lose (some) album art, play counts, ratings etc. if you don't grab the whole folder. iPhoto you should just be able to grab the iphoto library "file"

For the most part, the iTunes and iPhoto libraries are simply folders with all your media and database files within it, largely self-contained, so my understanding is that it's pretty much just copy everywhere.

Some permissions on files may be lost depending on where and how you transfer them but iPhone has a repair permissions function (hold command and/or option when opening a library).

You'll also lose some preferences for the app itself, these are largely just settings, such as things like icon size, whether you've seen the tutorial video etc.
