Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

It'll be interesting to see in what direction Apple takes OS X at WWDC this year. I feel like they've gotten it to a pretty good place with Mountain Lion refining all the stuff from Lion, and between Snow Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion, have done enough under the hood updates to keep development on the cutting edge for the next few years. Only thing I can really think of is better drivers, maybe supporting OpenGL 4.2+ and the latest OpenGL ES, and then really boring stuff like Maps and Siri support.

How is it that an app like iExplorer ( http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/ ) is able to access the iPhone filesystem (including the sandboxes of each app) without the phone being jailbroken?

The file system uses user permissions like OS X. With OS X, users have at least read permissions to most of the file system, with the exception of other users' folders.

On iOS, the user has access to a very limited part of the file system that won't generally break the OS or its security. This is what you have access to with apps like iExplorer. You can't see anywhere near the complete filesystem because you need root access to see the rest. Jailbreaking gives you that access.

I guess what I really want to know is, why isn't that functionality available out of the box? Why can't I mount an iPhone or use iTunes or even xCode (I know you can get to apps that you've developed this way) to dig in instead of using a 3rd-party program?

Guys, how the hell do I install this fucking QuiXplorer app? It doesn't have a .dmg or .app file, no installer, just a bunch of random folders.

Or you can suggest another web-based file explorer if you know one.

I've used this on FreeNAS and it's fine.

Anyone have any thoughts on Postbox?

I'm still using and loving Sparrow, but I've always thought about switching away since it's effectively discontinued. After seeing Number45 mention Postbox, I checked their site and see that it's on sale (save $3 =) till 5PM PST. Might grab it, but less than 24 hours is hardly enough time to get a good feel of whether it's good or not.

I took the plunge. Had it for a couple of days and I really like it, but this is the first actual email client I've used for Gmail (no idea why I felt I needed one on Mac, since I was more than happy using the browser on Windows) so I have nothing to compare it to.

Works nicely on both Windows and Mac, native support for labels (which was the main selling point for me). Integrates with social networks as well, but I'm not all that bothered about that kind of functionality.

Did you read the requirements?

Requirements:
Web server with PHP

It's probably a bunch of PHP files that you have to put in the root dir of your web server.

Oh ok I'm sorry guys.

I'll try to figure out how to setup my Mac mini as a php web server.

Currently outside home I use stuff like VNC and Splashtop to manage it from another Mac or iPad/iPhone but for file management I'd rather have a dedicated client (especially to use with the iPad).

On that note, if you have any suggestions for FTP server software, shoot them please. Thx.

Can't you set a timeframe where Time Machine backs up to Time Capsule? Would prefer if it only backs up during the night when I'm sleeping and the computer is charging.

I remember that there's a program that can do that. I think it's called time machine scheduler. You can set it to backup at only certain times.

God, iCloud Email, what is wrong with you?

Apple gives us all free @me.com and @icloud.com email addresses but will not let me set them up!

If I try to enable iCloud from System Preferences it tells me I have to enable it from Mail's own preferences.

If I try to enable it from Mail, it doesn't connect. It won't let me edit the "Incoming Mail Server" and keeps that box greyed out. If I try to save settings it tells me the "Incoming Mail Server" box cannot be empty. But it will not let me put anything in that goddamned box!

If I go on Apple's support site it tells me to enable it from System Preferences by checking the box. Badda boom it's simple. NO. It's NOT simple. Your software is not working! How the hell do I set up iCloud email?

If I try to add one in from the Add Account part it tells me the password (Which it never gave me and is apparently not the one I use for my Apple account) is incorrect. Even though it's the password I use to log in on icloud.com.

Fucking hell. Piece of shit. I am so frustrated right now. Why have this free email option when you can't even get it to work right? I've tried deleting everything and starting fresh and I still get all the same stupid errors.

It shows up on my iOS devices fine. In Mail on my iPhone and iPad I have both my normal Gmail address and an iCloud one that points to @me.com. In the iCloud section I have a welcome email that tells me how to send email from my iCloud account but not how to actually connect Mail to it.

Bullshit. Bullshit Apple. And I don't have an Apple Store to take it to so I can get a Genius to figure it out. Bullshit. Does ANYONE here have a working iCloud option in Mail.app?

Edit: I've been able to get the iCloud sidebar item to appear but it has a "disconnected" icon and when I click it, it asks for a password, which will not work. I am entering the password I use for my Apple account. Since they DID NOT GIVE ME A NEW PASSWORD. And my iCloud is usually attached to my @gmail.com address. I cannot take my iCloud account online no matter what.

Edit: Finally figured it out! It was just me being really dumb I guess.

Settings > iCloud > Account > Mail and it lists the address.

It is normally automatically setup in Mail when you login with iCloud. I have an iCloud account in Mail and I never set anything up.

Edit: Oops. I thought this was the iOS thread. :p

Nope. Does not work. It appears as if the password is wrong. And if I use the "reset" password it obviously reveals that the password is supposed to be the one I use with my Apple account. Which works everywhere else. In iTunes. On icloud.com. On my iOS devices. The only place the password will not work (Apparently) is trying to connect Mail.app to my iCloud account.

Edit: I knew what you meant though. My iOS device worked right out of the box. But Mail.app in Mountain Lion will not connect at all. The checkbox in System Preferences next to the mail icon under iCloud won't go on. The "disconnected" icon in Mail.app's sidebar will not go away. Why even have iCloud if I can't access it from my computer?

Hope we get the announcement of the next OS X in January or February.

I mean it's not an important thing, but I've wanted multiple email addresses for a while just for certain things and I can't even use the ones given to me properly. Basically right now my iCloud email addresses are mail I can only read on an iOS device. Apparently.

Edit: Finally figured it out! It was just me being really dumb I guess.

Well, actually to be more clear, my @icloud.com address works. But I'm not sure the @me.com one does. I have to do more looking into it.

Edit: Nope. Looks to be working now. Long story short, for gmail I use one name, but apparently for iCloud I use a different one. Hmm..

Okay. Now that my iCloud email problem is solved, I have another curious question.

I thought iCloud.com was supposed to show my photo stream? But I can't find it in the grid. There's 7 icons. Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Reminders, Find my iPhone and iWork. Shouldn't there be pictures too?

No, it's either in iPhoto on Mac or the Pictures folder on Windows, I think.

But You're supposed to be able to see them on iCloud too. That's why it's a Photo Stream. Any photos in the stream are supposed to be viewable on iCloud. Aren't they? At least was my understanding? If not then that's silly. But whatever.

Well, Apples definition of what iCloud is, is not just the icloud.com website.

So my GFs mac is starting to take pretty long to open up her programs (All she uses are itunes, word, powerpoint, and safari).

It sure wasnt like that when she first got the mac. They opened up pretty quickly. Now it takes about 30 seconds to sometimes nearly a minute to open up itunes. Also, she said that she is seeing the spinning beachball much more often now.

Is there anything to do apart from a clean OS install?

Its a 2010 unibody mac with a standard 250gb HDD and 4gb ram (upgraded from 2) on Mountain Lion. Im looking for a cheap SSD for it so I can pop that in, but until a deal pops up, what can be done about this?

Yeah but it includes the iCloud website so you'd think you could view the Photo Stream there as well as all the other stuff it has like reminders and calendar stuff and iWork, etc. I could have sworn they were talking about being able to view your stream on the iCloud site and opening it up to share with certain people. I guess not.

You can make sharable galleries of a photostream that are viewable within a web browser. I have no clue how one would do it in Windows, but in iPhoto and Photos on iOS you can get a URL that can be given out for viewing only. It's not really intended for the owner of the stream, just their friends.

Interesting. I guess I misunderstood it. I thought it let you view them online too. Oh well. Whatever.

Anyway, ever since I got Gmail I've used POP3 which would download the email from the server and delete it when Mail.app receives it so it would disappear from there. So I have like 12 years worth of email stored on my computer's drive.

With todays adventure of setting up iCloud email I discovered the wonders of IMAP, which instead leaves the email on the server and lets you control it from anywhere.

So I decided to switch my Gmail to IMAP. Will I regret this?

I have about 300MB worth of downloaded physical copies of emails that I am currently going through to clean up the garbage. (I let myself really get behind and had like 2000 emails I haven't read from newsletters and companies and software notices and all kinds of stuff that I am just now getting around to deleting and saving.) Because for years I've used POP3. But since I now have an iPhone and iPad it would be nice to be able to control my email from any of them from now on out. You know, take advantage of the 10GB Google offers now for email storage.

I wish there was a way to somehow reupload all the archived Gmail email back to their servers preserving the folder structure I currently have so it could all become searchable from anywhere.

I'm new to IMAP so I don't know the benefits or drawbacks to it. What does everyone else with Gmail use?

Both the About This Mac and Activity Monitor's Disk Usage are giving me one reading of how much free space I have on my HDD. Yet, Finder is giving me another figure. To put it into context, Activity Monitor read I had only 40GB left. I then deleted 9GB of space. Now AM is telling me I have only 43GB left but Finder shows me as having 9GB more space.

What is going on?

edit: nm, time machine issue

Holy shit, I'm using Firefox for the first time in 1.5 years and it's incredible how much Google Chrome drained my battery. What the hell? I didn't know that my MBP had so much battery power.

Or it could be because I just put a SSD in it, but I highly doubt it.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get push notifications for gmail in notification center without having to have gmail open in safari, and not having the mail app open?

i finally got around to installing my new SSD into my aging early 2007 MBP and while the old drive had a Lion installation which I noticed caused my computer to slow down, I have only gone up to SL with the SSD in fears of Lion slowing things down again despite the SSD.

BUT, things are remarkably faster with this drive, it is pretty insane, if I go to ML, any ideas of what kind of performance hit I will encounter on a 2007 Core 2 Duo 2.16 with 3GB of ram?

Fun fact: The mid 2009 Mac Mini (A1283) has a SATA2 controller

However, if you got the 320gb HD then you got a SATA1 5400rpm drive, but maybe this applies to the 120gb option at the time. Mine started to die on me so while I was diagnosing problems I noticed the discrepancy in System Information then ended up replacing it with a 7200rpm SATA2 drive along with bumping the memory to 8gb. It's running smoother than it ever has now.

Hope so. I love Mountain Lion, but I am so ready for some 10.9 preview goodness. I forget how it was announced last year. Was there an event or was it just a press release and a page on the site "Coming this Summer"?

they invited press to a closed door demo, gave some presentations with an embargo date, and then stories just hit one day by surprise.

I can't remember if the website was updated that day with screens or a little later.
