Finally ordered the OWC SSD for my '10 MBP. As many others have asked for SSD recommendations I will give my impressions as soon as I get it and install it.

I've never seen that symbol before. Is that like Home and End? In the US, Home and End are diagonal arrows pointing to the top left and bottom right.

In my Preview it's the same icons, but it activates when I press Up and Down.

you mean the hidden library folder that they don't want you to see anymore?
No, the formerly hidden Library I want to be able to see and have unhidden. I want to be able to see all preference and cache folders in there. When they put them as hidden folders in the root of the Home folder, it's misleading when I am missing a few gigabytes that I can't find because they hid them away from me.

Couldn't you always put accents over e's? Option+e+e again = é. It always amuses me when I hear people explaining to Windows users a long process for inserting some special characters that can easily be inserted with the Option key on OS X.

Yes, and that's what I used to do (and maybe will do in future). I wasn't explaining to a Windows user - I was just amusing myself with a new feature. Yes, I am simple-minded and get amused by simple things.

It's one of those 'new OS' things. You know, you get new software, and you just play with the features and make small inane posts about them. :p

kind of like "this is a neat touch", or "I like how..."

No big deal.

eeeé as an aside, it does mean Apple turned off keyboard repeat by default!
(although I guess it takes a bit to kick in, as I swear I held down e just above).

Edit: Forgot to mention that you can trigger those functions with fn+up/down arrow key.

Oh, they're "Page Up" and "Page Down". At least that's what they used to call them. Apparently Apple just uses icons now.

This thread is such a nice change from that other "Buying a Mac" thread.

So I just found out about BetterZip 2 which actually lets you look inside Zip/RAR/etc files and choose what to extract as well as open files within zip files. From what I've tried it's pretty damn good.

That might be because it's an international keyboard.

It still seems to be the "universal" symbol for Page up and down. The US Preview also has the same icons in the menu. My laptop doesn't even have Page Up and Page Down labelled, but I know that I can just use FN+Up and Down or Left and Right for Page Up/Down or Home/End. Still, they're not even labelled.

There's also TextWrangler if you want something for coding.

Or if you need something stronger but not as expensive, iWork's apps are $20 each. Pages, Keynote and Numbers.

Yeah Pages will be much better if you want a cheap word like app. Works great too. Text edit is very limited.

Textedit can do ASCII plain text and rich text if need be. But if you want something fuller get Pages since it's so cheap. And since the iWork apps are all sold separately now so you don't have to worry about buying all three and only using one.

I've always used Word but I'm seriously considering buying Pages just because I know Microsoft won't update Office with all the fun Lion shit until 2014. And I've totally bought into the full screen thing too. Have you used enough of Word to be able to tell me if it will be a tricky transition?

A friend of my mom got a Mac and she has gotten some gray line/bar on her screen. She said that it was picture of some glasses and a lock on this bar when she went to Google, so i assume that this bar is in her browser.

Does anyone know how to remove this bar?

?

Not sure what the lock could be though?

If so, View > Hide Bookmarks Bar

Yeah, she sent my mom a picture of the screen now and that is the bar indeed :) I see on the picture that the lock is near top right corner, on the same bar as the red, yellow and green light. I guess that this is just to indicate if the website is using https or not.

But i'll tell her how to remove it. Thanks for the help! :)

Yeah, i just manage to stealth edit my post with it before i saw your post, adding that i thought it was to show if the website was using https (or being encrypted). But thanks for the info regardless :)

So my MacBookPro has been refusing to boot... I phoned support and we tried pretty much everything short of erasing my hard drive and starting clean. When booting into SafeMode with the readout, the message/line it always gets stuck on is:

"[timestamp] pbs[63] (CarbonCore.framework) FSEventStreamStart: ERROR: FSEvents_connect() => Unknown service name (1102)"

Anyone got any idea what this means (the support person didn't know what it meant)? Anyway, I'm going to head to a local Apple repair shop and have them look at it... In the meantime, I'm mooching off of family members for use of their computers.

Quick Question:

When importing my 14k+ worth of mail through the built in method provided by Mail:

What I was told was to go into my Time Machine backup of Snow Leopard, and navigate to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes, and copy the Mailboxes folder onto the desktop. From there, I would redirect the "import mailboxes" function back to the Mailbox folder on my desktop. As I went into the Mailbox folder I only found the following: Deleted Messages.mbox, Notes.mbox, Outbox.mbox, ToDos.mbox, and there was not ainbox.mbox

My question is:

I have a few email addresses: one for school, two others for personal use. And within my ~/Library/Mail folder in my TM Snow Leopard backup, there are three folders that correspond to my three email addresses: IMAP-(schoolemailaddress), IMAP-(personalemailaddress1), POP-(emailaddress2), & POP-(emailaddress3). And so, my question is which folder do I import my mail from the TM to the new Mail in Lion because only in these folders do I see an "Inbox.mbox"?

Thanks!

Handbrake doesn't do AVI anymore because AVI is such an old outdated video format that needs to die a horrible death. It does MKV and H.264.

It's worthy of a laugh, but I think it's a little suspect. For one, a lot of the 'windows' steps are just checking settings before going back. Secondly, all of the same settings apply for Macs too, obviously, they just aren't listed. So the situations has to be either:

1) Macs are a little more automated, and you don't need to check the configurations - it will do it for you. (the situation most people are assuming and are amused by)

2) The author of the pamphlet just wants to make sure that nothing can go wrong AND he/she doesn't know enough about Mac settings to go through the details for the Mac instructions (possibly consulted someone who did and that was the response they got).

3) The author is a Mac user and is being a bit cheeky.

Still, amusing.

I spilled soda on my MacBook. It mostly got on the screen but some went in on the side with the USB ports, etc. Maybe 5 minutes after the fact it turned off on its own. Now it won't turn on. Is the motherboard fried? The battery is dry as is the HDD (the power indicator is at least working) but the power button isn't working/turning on - it looked like the soda got in one of the fans when I opened it becaise that was the only area that was visibly wet. Going in this morning but I want to know what to expect.

I was always using the energy saving setting to turn off my mac at night. Now I have a new one with Lion on it and it doesn't work. When I wake up in the morning it is just in sleep mode. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Also has anyone found a way to disable the startup chime with Lion? The prefpane I used before does not work anymore.

A couple of ifs for coming out of this with an OK Mac (my sister spilled coffee into her MacBook a year ago, it works with no issues):

-don't put power through it while the liquid is shorting the board
-nothing in the liquid corrodes or dissolves anything
-the sugary residue doesn't gum up the mechanical workings

I believe my dad took her MacBook apart and cleaned it as best he could with water and then let it dry for two weeks. The few times I've spewed beer or coffee into my keyboard, I've just washed them in the sink (must be genetic) with no ill effects.

Years ago, I saw a blog post about recovering a PowerMac G5 after a fire— the computer was full of smoke and ash and wouldn't boot. They took it all apart and washed it— in the sink, in the dishwasher. Dried it thoroughly and it worked fine thereafter.

Thank you! I don't think the spill was that bad (I have had bad spills that actually destroyed the battery and hdd), but I'm concerned in this case because it shut off so suddenly.

"-don't put power through it while the liquid is shorting the board"

It was plugged into the wall while this happened. Out of shock, I yanked it up and away from the spill area disconnecting the magsafe in the process... I might have a short circuit. I'm waiting on it to dry out a bit before attempting to power it on. I would take it apart further but it has those impossible to remove screws bolting the motherbord to the case. The good thing is there is no visible moisture or wetness left so I'm hoping for the best. Last thing I want to do is pay for repairs this late in the game on this model (core 2 duo MBP).

Power and liquids don't mix. If it's powered on, don't put liquids on it. If it's got liquids on it, don't leave it powered on.

I get the feeling you fried something and without actually looking at it you can't tell what it is. Where are the fans located that it got into the fans? I guess it got on the keyboard and not just on the screen/side?

Don't know if it's a problem with Lion or the Macbook Pro Mid-09 model, but when I turn on Automatic Illumination in Sys Pref. it isn't really working at all. My keyboard just stays the same and I have to manually do it. Not a huge problem but I just want the transition that it makes when going from off to on.

If you put your hand over the light sensor the backlights don't come on?

Two possible scenarios,

1, power button and topcase are damaged -$300
2, logic board is fried -$1240

This week just keeps getting better and better!

I'm going to do some trouble shooting to narrow it down, but it doesn't look good. At this point I'm considering getting a new MBP alltogether. ~$1700 doesn't look so expensive next to ~$1200 and I might be able to make up the difference selling the parts on eBay/craigslist. If I do get it fixed it's going to take a week to do so which is a bit of a non-starter. I can't believe this shit happened to me. What's that saying? Once burned, twice shy?

Seriously though, fuck this week. The craziest most horrible things have happened this week!

What is my best option for ripping DVDs to something I can edit in iMovie? I gather Handbrake is ok for playback but not the best for editing, but not sure. Thanks.
You can rip in M4V and MOV (I think?) format so those should be good for iMovie, no?

Yeah, I do this and it imports into iMovie just fine. Handbrake will let you rip certain chapters from a DVD too so if there's a certain scene you want to edit you don't have to rip the whole episode/movie.

Yeah, my sister had a similar report, so that's why my dad cleaned it ("it's going to be replaced whether I try and fail or if I don't try, so, might as well try it").

Yeah, that's what I'm facing. The biggest problem is I have doing that is I have a really hard time opening up those special screws they use to bolt down the logicboard. It's like they disintegrate the second I apply any force. Nothing's easy!

When it asks me for Codec, should I pick MPEG-4 (FFmpeg) or H.264? I'm guessing MPEG-4 is what iMovie would prefer?

LOL, I saw that in my local McDonald's last year. I was with a friend who'd just bought a MacBook and an iPad on the same shopping trip, so we had a laugh over that.

On another note, NetNewsWire doesn't seem to be going anywhere and Reeder just got updated with Lion features, so is it worth switching? I've been thinking about it for a while now.

GAF, one more time I need you help.

I just got one of these

X0aK7l.jpg

and an HDMI cable too. I connected to my Macbook Pro (which I just got it a couple of months ago) and to my Tv.

My tv is an 37" LG (model lg 37LH7030)

The problem is, I cant get a proper resolution for a decent picture FULLSCREEN on my Tv.

I tried switching all resolution but no good one was found. I searched the web and some people use to program called SwitchResX but I can't understand/find a way to make my Tv appear with a fullscreen.

Can anyone please, please help me? I just want to connect my laptop to my Tv and have a full screen image on it. I lost so many hours trying to finding a solution and nothing so far.

Thanks in advance.

NNW got sold to a new developer and they need to ramp up on that so it may return to its former glory one day.

but I prefer Reeder anyway and I would buy it regardless of what else is out there.

Is there a way to customise how the Apple Remote works on my '11 MBP? I can't seem to get it to work for anything but the standard Apple programs like iTunes, DVD Player and Front Row (which I don't even use). I want to get it working for VLC and MPlayer OSX Extended if possible. Otherwise I just wasted my money on a portable volume controller for my MBP.
