I'va had frequent crashes with iTunes 9 and Safari under Mac OS X 10.6. Safari is intermittent. ITunes is nearly guaranteed to crash at least once a day.

Google up iTunes 9 crashes - I'm not the only one.
Try a reset Safari to clear everything?

Is there a way to keep my music and podcast folder structure in iTunes? Like, for podcasts, can I set iTunes to download all podcasts to a specific folder?

I'm not sure what you're saying but when you go into your iTunes folder it should already be under music split up to different things.

I already have my music/podcasts/etc sorted on my NAS. I know iTunes likes to dump everything into one folder by default, I was just wondering if there was a way to make it work with a pre-existing folder structure (ie. downloaded podcasts go into my Podcasts folder on my NAS).

Wrong. I just bought my sister a mac with my student id a month ago in store.

Maybe it's different in America or they've changed the rules since but when I went to get my Mac at the Apple Store (Regent Street) they told me if I wanted a student discount I have to get it online, they told the same thing to one of my friends on a separate occasion too.

Zaraki_Kenpachi said:
I'm assuming ipods can't play .flac though, right? So it would be more worthwhile to convert?
I convert to Apple Lossless to play them in iTunes/iPod. Just trash the FLACs. You can always convert from ALAC to FLAC later if you need to.

Strange, because 2 years ago I did the same things too. I guess some stores are more lenient than others, my apologies.

Is there a way to convert it to apple lossless when it imports? I can't even get it to import, or do I have to rerip the cd?

Max can do batch conversion of a bunch of files.

I also really liked AudialHub for this, but that program was discontinued earlier this year. If you can find it, it's great.

Edit: I forgot that Max kind of hides the Apple Lossless option. Here's the instructions from the Max forums:

Open the Preferences. Go to "Formats". Scroll down the list to MPEG4 Audio. There are two entries for that: you want the top one. Double-click that and a sheet drops down. Select "Apple Lossless" and click "OK". That now appears as an option for output in the table at the top of the "Formats" tab in the "Preferences" window. Make sure the box next to it is checked.

If I wanted to format my MBP and only install Windows 7 (leaving Leopard off), would this be a difficult thing to do? I had dual boot set up, then later decided to delete the Windows partition. When I later decided to create a Windows partition again, it told me I had to reformat the whole hard drive first.

I don't think it's possible to install windows on a mac without boot camp.. in order for that to happen, you have to have OSX installed.

When I click the plus to add instead of using the list it was the first option there.

thats just weird. i wonder what would happen if you install OSX then Windows 7, then delete the mac partition?

also, what does it say about having to reformat the whole drive? ive deleted and repartitioned a drive many times. only once did i have an error about not having enough continuous space or some crap

You don't actually have to format again. Despite all the warnings from Boot Camp Assistant about using only it to manage partitions for Boot Camp, you can actually just use Disk Utility to partition the drive the way you want. The only caveat is the Windows can be incredibly fussy about the partition setup, which parition it's installed on, etc and refuses to boot when it sees something it doesn't like.

Boot Camp Assistant is just an ultra-limited partitioning utility that then sets the startup disk to CD/DVD before rebooting.

That said, it should therefore be theoretically possible to have just Windows 7 on an empty drive after you've partitioned it with Disk Utility on the OS X install disc, should it not? At least with rEFIt or whatever it is, if the stock Apple boot doesn't allow for it.

I periodically reset Safari entirely, so it's not really that. Safari isn't too bad. Probably 2 crashes since 10.6. iTunes has me all worried, like I can't trust clicking around it while I sync, for fear of borking my syncing.

That said, when I upgraded to Leopard, iPhoto used to crash when I had iTunes open, but was fixed after a point release. I imagine iTunes 9 bugs will ironed out fairly soon, as it seems relatively common.

I updated to Snow Leopard today, I'm loving the Quicktime X window. I wish every app was like this - just the content. Why doesn't it play .mkv?

I'm sure I've asked this before but just incase there has been anything new since then, here goes:
How can I link the Stickies widget on Dashboard with the Stickies app? How can I export a single Stickies note?

You should be able to play MKV if you install Perian. http://perian.org/

iTunes 9 sucks big time.

The first time, it crashed when I clicked Play, then Pause within 2 seconds on a Genius mix. When I tried to launch the app again, the iTunes DB was locked from editing and couldn't be read. It also took down Last.fm and Quicksilver with it.

I think iTunes has gotten far too bloated.

iTunes acts like a unique Carbon bitch, but it's always been good enough on Mac.

I know on Windows it actually fucking skips if you try and play music while playing a game, but on the Mac, it's always played music when I want it to play music.

can someone explain how the shared memory on the 9400M works? i have 2 gigs of memory, does that mean i only have 1.5 available to me at any given time? i was checking my stats using iStats and it said 500mb was inactive, and like 12mb was free. seems like a waste of memory..

Waste of memory would be leaving much of your RAM free and unused, which is why it's normally filled by disk cache when not used by programs.

Got 2 questions:

1) Best free image editor on mac that doesn't require X11? I don't like apps that require X11--IIRC, there was something that bugged me about how they don't behave identically to OS X apps. GIMP and GIMPshop require X11. Seashore is based on GIMP, but lacks significant features and is too unstable to be relied upon. Actually, free isn't even a hard requirement--let's just say my limit is in the 50-100 dollar range, and I want to be able to download my software.

2) Jesus, what the hell is wrong with Safari? Pinwheels every single day. Clearing the cache seems to clear things up, but only for a day or so. Repairing permissions, reseting Safari, following web guides and deleting stuff in Library and various plist files--nothing makes the problem go away. From the numerous google searches I've done, it seems like Safari has basically had this problem forever, too. Safari is finally blazing fast and 100% usable to me, yet it has this gigantic glaring flaw that totally kills it. Yeah, it's probably the fastest web browser out there (or close to it), but when I have to sit through 15 seconds of pinwheel on every 5ish page loads, the benefit is completely lost. Has anyone had success solving this? Even using Onyx's uber-cache cleaning skillz in 10.5, it kept coming back. I'm using no plug-ins. Well, except like the standard Java and Flash stuff. Funny enough, despite the big names, Java and Flash are as likely a culprit as my David Carradine Memorial Pornopiracy Petit Mort toolbar.

I think your choice of editor will depend on what you need it for (i.e.. photo touch up? Design? From scratch art?)

1a) Graphic Converter isn't really an image editor per se, started out as just that - a graphic converter, but has become a pretty good editor. It doesn't do layers, I don't think. Regardless, it's shareware - the only thing you can't do in the unregistered version is batch is disabled and has a 20 second start up. The registered is around US$30-40, I believe. I used this often, and I ended up paying for it.

1b) Pixelmator is a layer editor, and looks damn slick to boot. Utilises a whole raft of core tech, and uses GPU processing. NOt sure what has been added during 10.6. It has a free trial, and costs US$59 for the full version. the only reason I didn't get this was because its unsharp mask lacks a threshold slider. When it comes down to it, I will probably buy this.

1c) Acorn. Tauted as ":the Image Editor for Humans". I haven't tried it myself, but I guess this means it's the simple version.

2) Safari runs well for me. Had the occasional crash, but other than that, runs fine.

Acorn is VERY good, but takes some time to get used to. It does EVERYTHING I want it to do, but I don't do that much with images. Seems similar to what I remember Photoshop being when I used that at my college.

I'm definitely going to give Acorn and Pixelmator tries. I'm fairly sure that Acorn would meet most of my needs, but Pixelmator's webpage does a fine fine job of selling it. Looks very slick.

If there's a demo available, I'll probably give Photoshop Elements a shot, too, mainly because I've never tried it. I definitely don't want to have to use Adobe software if there are other acceptable options, though.

re: Safari. I never had problems with it on my other Macs, although I think I only used it very often on my G3 iBook and maybe my (Intel Core Duo) iMac.

Pixelmator is really pretty good. Very "Apple-like".

Nice. Although I like to pretend I'm hardcore and that flashy UIs don't mean much to me, I get all starry-eyed when I see some functional visual flair. I'm also not planning on using the demo of Photoshop Elements so much. The Mac version of 7 won't be out until late this year or early next year, and I'm not giving last year's software any time, especially when Adobe will probably charge full price for the upgrade.

yea thats true, its not what i meant. it just feels like im running slower when i have only 5mb of ram free. why isnt the inactive ram less to make my stuff run faster? of course it could all just be in my head and this is as fast as it gets.

alright heres a really weird question. whenever i use my laptop at my parents place on my bed it has this really weird vibration if i run my finger over the aluminum. :lol sounds retarded but im wondering wtf is going on..

Because no other apps are calling on that RAM so it would rather keep it available for things that HAVE used it.

And about the current thing, you are not alone. :O. I always figured I was nuts or something.

ah, but the ram is available for other programs if i need it? i figured i had to be wrong with what i assumed initially, would have been way too retarded

and im glad someone else notices it, i felt like an idiot for asking. whats weird is that it only happens on one specific bed. i kind of like the feeling though :lol

I don't want to start a new thread for this so I'm just going to post it here.

Ever since I've been using two monitors with my iMac, I noticed that after leaving it on for a while my hot keys and keyboard shortcuts stop working. Expose and functions keys also stop working (with the exception of the F keys that controls music and volume). That means stuff like cmd + space, ctrl + arrows, ctrl + space (!!! defeats the purpose of having Quick Silver for me!), and so on just gives me the "error" bing when I use them. The only solution I've found so far is to restart my iMac but obviously that's a huge hassle.

I've switched back to using my iMac monitor alone until I can resolve the problem. Anyone knows what gives?

If I can't ctrl + alt + cmd + 8 on the whim, I don't know what I'll do with myself!

Still no answer so can anybody recommend me a note-taking app instead? It should have a small window, with few/hidden UI elements, that I can keep on a desktop at all times and a way to see or quickly skim the contents of all the notes I've accumulated. Bonus points for a search feature or the ability to 'tear of a note' (export) from the database to a separate folder. Any app like that?

I'm having problems with iTunes 9: It fires up the "analyzing gapless playback" whenever I boot it up and it has about 6,000 songs to go through. About halfway through I'll get the beach ball and it will completely lock up my computer. I have to hold down the power button to shut it down (force-quitting doesn't do anything). Anyone have a solution for this? Not sure if it's particular songs in my collection or what the issue is, but as of now it's annoying to have to shut off the "analyzing gapless playback" thing every time lest it lock up my computer.

Since iTunes 9, sound check does not seem to work at all on my first generation iPod nano. Some songs are way too low and others like twice as loud. Yet they play fine on iTunes itself. And before 9 came out they played fine on the iPod. And the iPod was not updated. So it has to be iTunes. WTF? And yes, the option is turned ON on the iPod.

Does anyone have experience with making more then 1 backup location for Time Machine?

Right now I am using one external HD to use for a Time Machine backup. I'm planning to buy another external HD for a second TM backup. I was just wondering if this will be possible, because I heard this can give problems. I heard TM will only recognize 1 backup location.

Safari sometimes glitches when loading up the top sites page, if I have youtube playing a vid or a lot of tabs open and try to open another tab. it'll give me a distorted page for a few seconds before rendering the top sites icons correctly.

so last night i noticed my screen getting dimmer then brighter out of nowhere, then after about 5 minutes i realized it happened every time my tv got darker or brighter, so I disable the adjust my brightness option in preferences...damn didn't think the thing would be that sensitive

I don't think it can be done well. Time Machine likes only one to be currently functional. I'm not sure what happens if you plug an older time machine drive and reselect it to backup, whether it will continue from where it last left off, or just start a new one entirely. I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to work well.

I have the old non-unibody MAcBook Pro - and it changes brightness when the SCREEN ITSELF changes. Like if I'm in the dark, then I go to a page that is white, all of a sudden the mac thinks it's in a brighter area and brightens the display. The old MBP had the ambient light sensor behind the speaker grill, beneath the screen. I believe the unibody versions move it to the screen. That old design is really "What were they thinking?!" - the ambient sensor was pretty much worthless for screen brightness (useful for the keyboard backlight, however).

I'm getting a new harrd drive on monday and just wanted to check something. Can I just restore my backup to where I was from time machine or do I install snow leopard and then do my backup?
