Mac OSX Noob thread of OSX noobs

What the hell is this?

Do I have spyware or some other malware? This popped up while browsing. As far as I know, all I was doing was searching GAF. (I was using google).

Obviously, I've gone to some rogue site, but how did I go there? I didn't click anything (I don't think).
Locked App Store distribution coming to Mac OS confirmed.

Really? As common as it is with anything else.

Yeah I should have stated the question differently. Hardware failure is the same everywhere, sure but I was wondering about failure caused by software.

Probably a PC malware trying to get you to install it. I bet if you click OK it starts downloading an exe. There is no malware/viruses for Mac that I know of.

yup, this is almost surely correct. The fact it uses the term "PC" is a giveaway

Click "OK" mrkgoo. click it!!! I want to know :D

Well, it gave no other option, so I HAD to click OK. Actually, I can't remember if I just closed the browser. It was actually the second pop-up, the first which did have an OK and a cancel - and the cancel took me to a website which was mimicking a Windows 'My computer folder', and pretended it was scanning something.

That doesn't concern me, mostly. What concerns is how I got to that site to begin with. All I was doing was using google to search neogaf.com (for chinatown wars threads). I found and clicked on those, then I got those popups.

THE SITE IS COMING FROM INSIDE TEH COMPUTER

I've seen that before. Might've been a small pop-up that went unnoticed. I wouldn't worry about it.

Pretty much this - I would totally understand, but I wasn't doing anything particularly crazy. Just my usual sites (no these don't include porn and/or pirated software).

My three main sites I visit (I set up as a quick folder) are Neogaf, Macrumors and Touch arcade and google, so unless those sites gave me some weird popups....

But yeah, maybe a popup a site that I never clicked on.

Yeah, I got a site like that once. It's quite cute how they try to trick you into thinking it's legit. All the work they put into making a website that looks like an official Explorer window.

Note the Windows-style window inside the main window to get around pop-up blockers.

I feel bad for the people who actually fall for that shit. Ignorant Windows users who don't know it's not their computer. Then I remember how much I haven't had to put up with over the past 10 years and thank Apple for not going under in the 90's.

Yup looked pretty much like that.

Only thing is - where did it come from?

Also checking my activity monitor. Why the hell is flash for safari running 32-bit, when safari is 64-bit? I thought it couldn't do that?

Is Flash supposed to load up with Neogaf and stuff?

My computer (2.4ghz macbook pro, 2GB ram, 250Gb hdd 5400rpm) fucking CHUGS during iPhoto RAW image editing. And my temps shoot up to like 190 degrees too. How can i make it faster? More ram?

RAM would be good. What graphics processor are you using and how much video ram?

For my editing and design work I switch to the 9600GT with 256mb of vram.
Personally, I don't THINK I have a problem with my early 08 (non-unibody) MBP, with 256 ram, but I do have 4GB RAM.

I don't use RAW all that much, however.

Holy crap, it did it again!

I was DEFINITELY just browsing gaf.

Dammit. I don't have ANY clue how I'm getting this.

So..... any recommendations of malware software for Mac? I have no idea where to even begin.

Here's where it took me:
advancedproavscan7.com/scn1/?id=pHT31TDuNDI1LjQyLjExMCZwaWQ9Mzc5czUmdGltZT0xMjYxMUcOPAJM (I recommend NOT going there).

And like in Jasoco's image, it downloaded an .exe.

Is this locked in a preference file or something? Like maybe for flash?

Site doesn't exist. And they're usually just part of ads. Some ads might be fake, and open windows to these sites. Don't get your panties in a bunch, they can't harm your Mac no matter how hard they try.

At the time I got that one, it was a pop-up ad (Even with pop-up blocking off, they CAN get through if done a certain way) attached to an ad on a zShare page for a file I was downloading.

Also, the link doesn't work anymore.

Yes, that's what I thought - but is it coming through GAF, then? What can we do about it? It's damned annoying.

It appears to have coincided with GAF 500 errors recently, as well as those annoying ads that start playing sound simply by rolling over them. Is this a new thing? Has Neogaf changed something about the ads?

edit: Yes, site doesn't exist anymore - I guess the redirection is dynamic. There is definitely something else that pops up first that redirects there, though.

So where is the issue? Gaf? My flashplayer plugin?

Hmm. The page it takes me to has a windows environment, but it also has the IP address of my ISP.

I thought maybe something to do with my ISP then. However, earlier today, when I got it, I wasn't even on that ISP (wish I had saved a screen).

It must be something to do with me. Maybe. I really don't know much about these things.

SO IT'S NOT JUST ME!

I've had 3 "antivirus" alerts within the last 2 hours and all I've been doing is surfing GAF. I just got my MBP back from the Apple store today, and I've not installed many things yet.

I was asking around on Macrumors, and some kind chap there said it was most likely an issue with the server of the site I'm visiting. So it's likely that NeoGAF server is redirecting me.

*whew* Eases my mind somewhat. And since you have it as well, even more relieved.

*unbunching panties*

I didn't think anything was likely harming my computer, but I was wondering if I had installed some plugin. For example, I had been recently messing about with the flashplayer plug in, because I was trying out midomi.com - leading me to become aware of my flashplayer plug-in settings. I then updated flash at the adobe site. Then the Apple security updates just came out, messing with the plug-in. All coincidences, but it did make me go looking.

I believe there is no 64bit flash for OSX yet, but I may be wrong.

Just got the silly malware redirect while trying to get to the Off-topic forum. GAF's got a rogue ad.

This is also why I hate the smug "I don't use anti-virus because I have common sense" PC user discussions. I remember clicking a Starcraft 2 article on the front page of Digg and getting an exe downloaded and my anti-virus blowing up in my face and reporting that it found something else while the download was going on.

2 quick questions

1) I use both Windows (Vista and7) and OSX on an assload of machines. My oldest MacBook is starting to become a smidge unreliable, so I was thinking of "retiring" it and using it as a fuck-around machine. So, what OS should I throw on it? Exotic is good and interesting, but I'd like something that is reliable enough to use (no alphas or newer betas). I dig the command line and terminal usage in OSX, so I think I may want to try the BSD version OSX is based off of. Is that a good idea? I am assuming there is an X Windows-like GUI now.

2) Any easy way in either OSX or Windows 7 to make the hotkeys similar? I know you can do it by hand in OSX, but is there an application or script that will make it not be an annoying hassle? I can probably just get away with 'fixing' just the cut/copy/paste kets and a few others if it comes to that.

As always, thanks for the help.

is it a ppc macbook?

i guess maybe:

http://www.freebsd.org/
http://ww.opensolaris.org/ (dtrace,zfs...)

might be interesting

if you want linux, debian or gentoo might be interesting. but contrary to what a lot of people say i dont think gentoo teaches you much about linux, it just teaches you about how to use gentoo. if you really want to flex some command line maybe try linux from scratch.

So I got a new 13" MacBook this week (really impressed with the speed of delivery). Was wondering if anyone could recommend a reasonably price slip case for it.

Does anyone know a way to copy a legend of a chart made in Pages to Microsoft Word for Mac? I can copy the chart itself, but I can't get the legend to copy and I can't drag it.

I had to repair someone's PC yesterday because of that. I looked at his desktop, saw an icon labeled "Internet Security 2010", and knew right away exactly what had happened. I backed-up his files, and wiped everything.

Us Mac users are proud of the fact that we're not affected by that stuff, but we'd better not get too cocky. They day may come when the hammer falls.

Use flash blockers. I do in Chrome and I never get that fake alert. It probably is a rogue ad company going through the ad provider GAF uses.

BTW Chrome rocks FireFox's slow-ass socks. Just thought I'd throw that out there again.

So I replaced my harddrive and did an install from my Time Machine backup. Now I can only get to the Apple and the message Appears that I have to reboot my computer. I can't get past this screen.

Any Ideas?

PS: I also could not boot from the Snow Leopard disc for some reason so I had to use the Leopard one.

what's the best software to use if you permanently want to burn .srt subtitles into an .avi file, preferably without having to burn it on a disc?

You really dont need one. I toss around my 15" pro all the time and there arent any scratches. I know the most popular ones are from Incase and are around 30 bucks.

Hopefully somebody can help me with this persistant problem, Quicktime X has stopped playing .avi files. Initially I thought it was just a Quicktime problem so I went about trying to reinstall Quicktime (harder than it looks and I ended up reinstalling Snow Leopard) which fixed the problem for a while... but then one day Quicktime decided to stop playing .avi's again. What's going on?

I have the latest version of Perian installed (1.2). I've googled endlessly and have not found any solution.

Hm, repair permissions, install flip4mac, if it still doesn't work try to open it in VLC Player.

Repaired permissions many, many times between now and when it started happening. Had Flip4Mac installed for forever. I'd really prefer to use Quicktime, VLC doesn't scrub properly and FF/RW is just broken.
