MachineGames Still Plans to Finish the Wolfenstein Trilogy

Jerk Gustafsson is the studio director at MachineGames. MachineGames has been developing Wolfenstein games since 2014, and Gustafsson says he still plans to finish the trilogy.

During a recent discussion with GamesIndustry, Gustafsson admitted that, because of the time it takes to make video games in 2026, he may only have a few more projects in his career, about two or three to be more specific.

When asked if one of those games would be a third Wolfenstein, he remained coy, but expressed the intent to always return to the series, saying, "We wanted to finish the trilogy. And when we do that, that is something that I don't want to comment on. It can be now, it can be later, but we're not done with it. That's what I can say."

Jumping years into the future with Wolfenstein: Youngbloods was a weird choice if they're planning on making #3 a mainline, finale entry. It kind of limits what they can do if they place #3 before then. Or is the plan to play as BJ as a 70-year-old man?

Cryogenically freeze BJ, before shooting him off to Mars to then be defrosted by Doom Guy.

That's the crossover I want.

I really liked the first one, but thought the second one was pretty weak in comparison. Then again, I also prefer Doom 2016 to Doom Eternal *shrugs*

New Colossus is probably the most "Trump 1.0-era" game I can possibly name. Historians will be studying it someday for clues as to what happened to the industry and how so many people lost their minds.

Did anyone actually finish the second one? Is there even space for third?
Pacing and story were very, very poor, but the gunplay was still super fun and I did get to finish it yeah.

I'm hoping they just retcon it and say that Youngbloods is an alternate timeline or otherwise not canon, somehow, otherwise.....yeah, no idea what to do with the series if that's canon.

Make sure it doesn't have broken AI like TNC did, TNO didn't have mindblowingly AI or anything but it was fun and didnt feel bullshit. In TNC there were more than a few sections where I had to turn the difficulty down just to progress because I kept dying before I could kill them no matter what I tried to do, even like running away and wall peeking them, it felt broken.

Also the ending of 2 was trash and annoying, they clearly just ran out of time/money. The writing was also lofted up above the head of the writer and became boring. The writing in TNO was just engaging enough to serve the levels ideas/design and plot which was why people said it was so good (presumeably), when TNC came out everyone was terrifed of writing a sympathetic, complex story about a patriotic (white?) male so they made it too much about the other characters and tried to have the big moments be people valiently standing up to or subverting racism, it ends up a load of wank for the most part.

Regarding gameplay, they sort of went a good route making arcade style maps to repeat but then made the act of repeating them so fucking rote I did it just to get the upgrades. The upgrades as well, those were so underused and you could do all routes with both anyway so instead of feeling like Deus Ex-lite it was just an annoying roadblock to the shooting.

I'm not saying TNC was bad, its still a fun game and I could pick and choose a bunch of positive elements as well, but the downsides really did drag it down to a lower level for me than TNO. The home base missions/cutscenes being different depending on the starting choice made playing it twice worthwhile if you enjoyed that stuff, they had just the right amount of "involvedness" whereas the sequel pushed that too far sometimes and the payoffs/cutscenes weren't as good imo.

I'm tempted to replay both of them back to back and have a recent memory of all of them to make a final judgement but the technical hassle of playing TNO on PC is not appealling, its from 2014 and I have a GTX 1080 and locking to 60fps with good framepacing at even 1440p is really hard I find, I'd rather run it even higher than that because the IQ is so poor due to terrible AA options. Thats one area where the TNC really shines, awesome performance and amazing IQ from their (TS?)AA solution.

It never got a PS5 version so its 1080p@60 there, locked at least, same as it would be on PC if I wanted to not constantly be aware of the frametime stutters and just play. Hopefully it gets re-released but in the latest ID Tech engine at some point, if thats possible.

Anyway, heres hoping Wolf 3 is more like TNO than TNC, and please christ don't add any open world elements to it.

Yeah, TNO feels like shit to play on PC. id Tech 5 was the worst. Even if you get a "technically" locked 60 fps it doesn't feel as smooth as it should. And there's a utility to remove the 60 fps cap but it causes other issues. You also have to do other tweaks to get the texture cache working properly on modern systems iirc.

Luckily my system is far from "modern", its a GTX 1080 + 3770K lol, but still thats more than enough to do 60fps in many modern recent games as long as I stick to 1080p (or lock to 30fps and keep 4K, if appropriate for the game, obviously not for FPSes though). The main issue is I could barely get it to use external v-sync without tearing or stuttering I'm now realising must be due to the (almost certainly broken) in-game fps cap.

Not ID Tech but I had this recently with Titanfall 2, for some reason the in-game v-sync and fps cap is just completely fucked in that game, even today, you just disable it all in-game and use nvcpl/nvpi to apply v-sync and RTSS for the fps cap (I just prefer using that over nvcpl because I use it alongside scanline-sync if possible) its literally perfect and smooth even when you're up at 90% GPU usage, you'd think the people making the engines would see these issues since I know its a widespread issue, but the reality is most people just don't really notice egregious stuttering, let alone something like this đź‘€

Guess we have different opinions cause New Colossus is the only one with great gameplay. Am thrilled to play another if it plays similar to NC. But yeah, Youngblood and Cyberpilot were đź’©.

I had fun with (one of?)them... i had some performance issues on the amd card i had back then, so i spent most of my time in the settings screen trying to fix a wierd stutter

but i remember i wasn't looking for the videogame... there was always lots to shoot at right in front of me and i was dual wielding big guns lol... they put it right in my veins where i want it

i would play more of that... especially if i could avoid the fucking settings screen, god

We need the Mecha Hitler boss.

Do it Machine Games !

I really liked Wolfenstein 2, but the one with the two daughters was a complete joke of a game

Papito I'm having a hard time digesting all the hate responses in this thread, lol. The first two games were fantastic, when did GAF take such a hard turn on them?

Yeah I am surprised too. I thought the first two games were awesome, very fun to play and I would like to see a third entry finalizing the story

The exact opposite for me.
Gunplay was just B-A-D with TERRIBLE hit detection, feedback and stick curve sensitivity.

Story was schlocky but fun.

For me, it's a one and done "story" game since the gunplay was fucking terrible

Doesn't look like Indy sold very well. Wolfenstein was pretty healthy sales wise.
Wouldn't most of the money been on being on gamepass? If it didn't sell well that's a shame. I figured people wanted this as it filled the void of no uncharted Or tomb raider. And the game was really good imo. Much better than anything they done recently.

Really? Damn. I played with keyboard and mouse, wonder if that made a difference specially when it comes to aiming. I remember thinking that the guns felt good to use and that hitting enemies had a lot of good and punchy feedback.

Doom Guy is related by blood to BJ after all.

BJ is Commander Keen's grandfather and Commander Keen is Doom Guy's father
