I'm watching Frontier...OP is legit. Why is Sheryl Nome such a bitch? Finished first ep, not too bad at all. These beetle kaiju things give absolutely zero fucks and I highly doubt these are Zentradi. Their mechs never looked like that.

Are they listening to a Fire Bomber song in ep 2 of Macross Frontier while they're in the car? I'm really liking Frontier so far. It seems to take itself more seriously than Delta does and the SDF homage scene that they always copy in the first episode was better. I'm also liking the soundtrack.

The Macross FB7 movie makes it more obvious.

I thought it was pretty consistent. It's been a year since I've seen it, however.
Just to give you something to look forward to, episode 7 is so damn hype at the end. It's one of my "THIS is why I watch anime" scenes.

My God Alto is so feminine looking. If they don't have him cross dress like Loran in Turn A Gundam I'll be disappointed. Alto would probably fucking win the Miss Macross Pageant. Holy shit Ranka is singing "My Boyfriend is a Pilot." I'm having a hard time not liking this.

Episode 7 really is sooooo good. I can watch it almost endlessly and enjoy it.

He's a kabuki dancer or something right? I enjoyed that mock battle sequence when he threw his battleroid into a victory pose that mimicked his on stage pose. Alto has been a pretty good protagonist so far. I'm also loving Sheryl Nome. She's got a pure heart but loves to play around a bit. I like Ranka as well. I like the idol usage in this show. So far the singing has had narrative reasons and the idols have actual character growth and personality. I'm going to finish this off before I watch more of Delta but so far I think Frontier is the superior show. I'm on Ep 6 so far. I'm curious as to what's the secret behind the Vajra as well. As of now this is a formula that didn't need tweaking cause Frontier is actually a legitimately good show with the right balance of seriousness and goofy fanservice. I know it has its detractors but I like it a lot so far.

You should watch the Frontier films too as they are better than the TV series.
I'm trying to track down FB7 at the moment - I'm really digging Frontier (And the end of episode seven was, yes, amazing - I'd forgotten that that was a thing that can happen in Macross!) but I'm a Fire Bomber fan at heart.
I've heard conflicting opinions on this. Considering that I already didn't particularly care for DYRL compared to SDF, title song aside, I tend to ignore things that are part of an alternate continuity from the shows.

I don't like DYRL anywhere near as much as I like SDF, my favorite thing I like out of DYRL is (An) Angel's Paints. DYRL didn't become bearable till I turned my brain off and stopped going, "that's not how it happened in the show." So I might not like FB7 as much, who knows to be honest. Sounds like Ep 7 is awesome though, I should be able to watch that one tonight.
Watching both is best way to watch Frontier. I vastly preferred the movies also and I think it has the canon storyline
Sums up exactly why I don't care for it when anime films for shows insist on alternate continuities (which is pretty much always these days, not just for Macross).

Whenever Macross does an alternate retelling (which is a lot of the time), I don't think it has a "canon" storyline - like how Delta referenced both DYRL and the TV series when invoking Mirage's grandparentage. Macross continuity has always been a bit fuzzy that way.
But I do prefer the more concrete resolution of the Frontier movies to that of the series.
While that's an understandable perspective, I had no complaints about the open-ended conclusion of the actual series (I felt that it was an interesting change of pace compared to its clear-cut predecessors). That said, I doubt that Delta will be repeating anything of the sort.

Does everybody still act the same? I don't think I'd tolerate a Ranka or Sheryll Nome that doesn't act like how the act on the show. And so far Ranka is way cooler than Freyja in my opinion. They seem like sort of the same kind of character, but I kind of feel that Ranka is done better, though I haven't gotten that far into Delta yet. Maybe if Freyja breaks out a Minmay song I'll give her some more points.
To be honest, by the time we got the 2nd movie, which is where things were changed alot, I could barely remember the Frontier series so it was almost like watching a new thing. When thinking of Frontier TV, the only things I really remember now is the music, stupid chasing Sheryl's panty episode (yeah that actually happens) and the goddamn non conclusive ending.
Upon searching abit perhaps the movies are not canon, my bad. Ideally, like I said you'd watch both to get the whole package but IMO from a viewers perspective they provide a better conclusion than the TV series which is why I think it's more enjoyable

FB7 is weird as hell but also kinda bad. It's just a clip show of Macross 7 to advertise the bluray release in the wrapper of Ozma, most of the SMS crew, Ranka and Sheryl learning the Beauty of mysterious VHS tapes delivered by a birb. Only really worth watching for the bit at the end where sheryl and ranka do a Fire Bomber medley, which you can easily find on YouTube anyway.

They do. more or less in the first one. Ranka is a bit mroe mature and I actually like her arc a lot better in the movies than I did in the show. It's just a shame that the second movie is just plain horrible. Ok, horrible may be a bit strong, but it loses out on a lot of the drama of the series. It's just so different I had trouble adapting.
DYRL took me a bit to love, but I adore it now. It really works well as an in universe movie retelling the story of the Macross. It's fictionalized history. And MAN it's pretty. Also "Do You Remember Love" as a song is amazing.
Now as for the Frontier movies. The first one is AMAZING. It's better than the episodes it's adapting, gets a tighter grip on the characters, and has one of the greatest battle scenes in the history of the series. All the complaints I had about the series are pretty much fixed in the movie. It covers like the first 7 or so episodes IIRC. Great music, great animation, great intro to the story.
Then it all went to shit with part 2.

Very interesting. It's a tighter version of what seems to be Alto's training and the love triangle between Alto, Ranka and Sheryll? That doesn't seem too bad then, though from what I've watched the pacing isn't even too bad since I like the dynamic between Sheryll and Alto. The first six so far have been pretty damn good episodes. I also really like this soundtrack. There was a track playing while I think Sheryll and Alto were going around the city in Ep 5 having fun and it was great.

I disagree on Alto. I always felt lukewarm on him and never felt he stood out as a character. He's just an insecure guy who looks like a chick and was a famous dancer. A basically good guy though but consistently pushed around by circumstances rather than taking an active role in improving his life.
At one point Ozma actually calls him out on this directly too. That whole sequence is pretty exciting!
By the by, Sheryl and Ranka are great. Ranka's just adorable, and her give-it-everything attitude makes her more endearing. Ironic that she feels inspired by Alto but hey that's a plot point too after all. I also really like that Ranka's VA is a total newbie. Going back to episode 1 the difference is pretty clear to the movies. The performer grows into the role as the character shines more brightly in-universe. A great fit. As for Sheryl, come on, brah. I need a gif of her looking haughty because she's awesome and she knows it.

I guess I like Alto cause I can relate to the guy, I guess it helps because he plays off some really good characters. Probably just elevated by better characters. I'm not expecting him to be perfect either, but I guess he should take more of a role with what happens to him. He's no Hikaru or anything, but I'm enjoying him more than Hayate from Delta so far. I guess I just like that these characters seem more like actual character than tropes like in Delta, I don't hate Delta since I was adjusting quite fine to it.

In terms of macross pilots its pretty safe to put max and millia as one and two respectively. As im pretty sure max in a vf-1 could actually beat out delta squad in there fancy pants vf-31s. As for third im going to have to say isamu. The prototype YF-19 is a flying death trap (he is the seventh or so test pilot for it iirc) and not only does he fly it with style, on pure skill alone he shows it to equil or exceed the brainwave controled YF-21. Fourth best pilot id say would be basara. The stuff he pulls off in the vf-19 kai, while not shooting down anyone and singing at the enemy takes mad skills. Anyone beyond the top 4 is fairly debateable.

Basara is definitely Top 3 or maybe, Top 2 in terms of raw potential. The dude easily pulls off combat maneuvers that Gamlin, an ace-tier pilot, had a hard time doing. He's able to accurately land single speaker pod shots on targets in moving targets, sing and play his guitar all the while using a custom guitar control scheme for his Valkyrie. He's pretty nuts taken at face value. I'd be scared to think what he could do if he was an actual combat pilot and was willing to shoot people down, lol.

some people debate if he's better than old M7 Max (not sure about young Max).
not sure where Isamu stands but Miria may be at the bottom of some people lists.

I'll most likely get to the hot blooded rock and roll overlord after I'm done with Frontier. Seems like M7 is crazier than Frontier though. And I like my idols female, I just like the female Jpop better, but I'm pretty sure I can deal with Basara. I did like what I heard from Fire Bomber in ep 2.
