It's a Hollywood-style zombie action blockbuster from the Attack on Titan creative team. The work they're trying to put into the shading and details of the characters is out of control. If that sounds appealing to you, you'll probably like it.

Eren Jaeger aside I was able to watch and enjoy AOT. I also like Fate Zero and Fate Stay Night...oddly enough even liked High School of the Dead. So Kabaneri shouldn't be to hard to like. Macross Elysion...they still make big ass Macross ships? The Elysion Captain looks like something out of Outlaw Star.
Ep2 is done. I don't hate this. It was just a severe adjustment period. Still like the classic character designs better though. Who is Mirage related to? I mean I know who, but I don't think she's like Miriya's daughter or anything. I'm pretty sure she's like her granddaughter or something.
I would love to see Haruhiko Mikimoto's 'Macross the First' manga get a TV adaption...but that's more than a pipe dream, especially since the series has been behind schedule for a while now, with Mikimoto currently working on other projects like 'Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.'

Made it through episode 4, and yeah, this is totally Macross 7 2.0. Pilots who don't want to fight, Valk v Valk combat, the day being saved every time by music a Jenius around, and a 14 year old girl singer. I hope it hooks me like 7 did. I don't think there was an anime that brought me from hating it, and hating it's main character, to cheering for them by the end of the series. I mean seriously (spoilers for 7, only because some are thinking of seeing it)
I hated Basara with a passion early on. He was a pretentious ass who was endangering everyone. By the end of the series I had gone on the same journey that everyone else did, and was screaming BOMBA! when he got out of the hospital.

First 4 episodes of Delta has had idols dancing around in the battlefield in jet skirts remote controlling drones that dance around in the sky but also protect civilians from the attacks of a Rival faction of ace pilots backed up by a singer that causes people to go berserk and kill people. Then you have the antics of the main characters, Heathcliff the mercat, and pseudo science invovling fold receptors and shit, lol. Everyone accepts this stuff at face value too!
Mac 7's first 4 episodes are basically everyone looking at Basara and going "WTF" as he flies out in a bright red Valkyrie singing to the attackers. The craziest thing in there is that he fires speaker pods, that's it really.

Most of that stuff isn't that crazy for Macross. It's really not on the level of making space vampires orgasm with rock music, trying to sing a mountain away, or the other absurd places Macross 7 goes. Even the early episodes of 7 are about an eccentric artist piloting a mech/plane hybrid with a guitar and trying to stop space battles with vampires by playing his music. I can understand why someone who has only seen SDF and Plus would think Delta is pretty wacky, but it's not that far from Frontier and hasn't hit the absurdities of 7.

The only thing that is absurd in that are the space "vampires" (vampire elves!) and the guitar control scheme in all of that. Those are still less wacky then a bunch of idols with no combat experience hopping around and singing the roid rage away if you ask me! The singing to move a mountain looks silly but it never actually happens. It's just there to show his resolve and how eccentric he is in regards to his belief in singing.
non-corporeal beings that took over an advanced species of humanoids around the time Protoculture was around and creating the Zentraedi. These creatures fed off an energy generated naturally by humans they called Spirita. The base grunts looked like vampires crossed with elves though the big wigs were all big devil looking creatures in appearance. They were defeated by people called "Anima Spirita" or people that created a Spiritia that they couldn't absorb and actually caused them problems.
The main method of generating it was through singing but not just any singing, it was a, earnest belief in one's singing that generated it. Basara was the one that naturally did it because of his love of music and how he wanted to express his feelings and heart through song. By the end of the series, we find out EVERYONE can create this energy if the wanted and it's not just through singing at all. It's hammy but it really has this amazing message about music, belief in one's self, and positivity that's kind of hard to find in media in general, not just anime.
The last part of the spoiler is part of why I don't like Frontier and why I'm not fond of Delta right now in regards to the music aspect of the franchise. It's really music for music's sake (which isn't necessarily a bad thing ) but I really expect something more if you're going to focus on it.

Just gonna have to agree to disagree. =P
Spoilers if you haven't seen Macross 7.

Submarine Street is pretty good too. I like a lot of the songs from Macross 7. You'd have to to enjoy the show with how much they repeat the music. So much Planet Dance.

Man this is so depressing to read lol. Macross(first saw it as Robotech) is probably my favorite anime of all time. The next iteration I saw was Macross Plus and I love that as well. Never saw Macross 7 although I hear about how bat shit crazy it was all the time. I didn't enjoy Frontier and stopped around halfway because I didn't like the direction of the show. And from everything I've heard about Delta, I'm not sure I even want to give it a chance.

I'm getting better with it. I don't hate it, it's just...shocking. I'll most likely watch ep 3 tonight. If I could roll through Kill La Kill like 3 times I'll survive this.
Kawamori is like Tomino. In their status as creators of popular and long-lasting science-fiction anime franchises, sometimes people overlook the fact that they're both nuts.

But why is the original Macross so tonally different then? I mean it had a fair mix of light and dark to it. Unless that's just me looking at that one through nostalgia glasses?
Nah, it's not nostalgia glasses at all. SDF Macross is definitely tonally different than the later series and manages to mix the idol music into the show in a way that works pretty well. It's a bit due to the era too though. Even Frontier and Delta are influenced by the era as well. That's why I give them some leeway and am willing to watch some of it in hopes that they still manage to capture the spirit and not just the form of Macross. Unfortunately, Kawamori...
Interestingly, I think Mac 7 is the only one that's not really a product of its era because of just how fucking goofy it is. I guess you could make an argument for its music to be part of that era but the rest of the show, lol.
I don't think it's just due to their era. Kawamori's involvement with the later series seems to be bigger than with the original series, looking at credit lists. That probably explains why certain elements take larger focus.

How does one watch Zeta, Victory and Turn A and not come to the conclusion that Tomino is nuts? Kawamori on the other hand is complete news to me. I guess since I didn't realize just how hands on he actually was and didn't see another show that he created outside of SDF Macross and Escaflowne I thought he was a real serious person. In reality I recently came to realize the man is fucking bonkers.

Kawamori's madness is more apparent outside of Macross. You should check out Earth Maiden Arjuna. When people call Kawamori nuts they aren't talking about wacky idols singing or whatever is happening in Delta.

The OP of this reminds me of something from Gundam Seed Destiny...not sure if that's good or bad since I prefer the older JPOP OP's...I miss the 80's OP's. Why exactly does Mirage have Legolas ears?

Finished ep 3. Not too bad. Is Ayate supposed to be a better pilot than Hikaru at this stage? Granted early Hikaru didn't need a magical mcguffin music buff to actually fly decently. He just needed to get more experience to get shot down...less.

Hikaru was mainly a pilot as seen in his fan racer blowing past the vf-1's in ep 1 of SDF Macross
Hayate has experience with battroid as a worker so it seems very natural for him. his piloting skills need developing but looks like he gets super bursts from music.

This I completely get. I guess to me it just seems like they nerf Mirage to make Hayate look better. Nobody got nerfed for Hikaru, he just caught up and still couldn't catch up to Max or Mirya.

i like to argue that Hikaru was the ace Mirya was looking for since Kamjin (robotech Kyron) warned her of the one ace on board the SDF-1 Macross. but Hikaru was injured due to Misa's delayed timing and enter Max.
of course DYRL had hikaru look like a scrub in the beginning instead of being Max's squad leader.

Then why did Max always come off better than Hikaru? Hikaru couldn't even beat Max in a video game, which Max beat Miriya in. Max wasn't a slouch at all. Dude sortied a lot and came out just fine.

Max is definitely the ace but Hikaru, at least in the TV series, was a good pilot.
Just to add... Kamjin was just referring to hikaru when warning Miria, not to say that Hikaru is really better than Max. it's just that Kamjin didn't interact with Max yet. but Kamjin referring to Hikaru as an ace is a good compliment =)

Ok that makes a lot more sense then. DYRL did annoy me with the pilot rankings. Hikaru was trash tier and Roy barely got to do anything. TV series showed some good skill growth though. I'd like to think Hikaru actually surpassed Roy in the show.

I'd like to think Mirya still. Isn't she still top shit in 7 with an outdated VF-1? Not to mention she was never trained on how to pilot the damn things. She goes to war in one I do believe on the day of her wedding and kicks ass so I think she can just naturally pilot anything. Hikaru is no slouch though. I love that moment where he discovers Minmay kissing Kaifun during that invasion. Dude lost his shit.
