For the Great Wind

Walkure need to step up their game. They're still Jamming Birds tier compared to Sound Force. I need more over the top.

I'm predicting the inevitable "leads star in film of previous series" episode will have Freya playing Mylene and Mirage getting pissy about it.

Seems like a bet that paid off if there's that many alien races.

What do you mean? They disappeared after four years and were never seen from again, which makes sense when you realize the center of the galaxy is a giant black hole surrounded by a swath of stars. Not exactly the safest place to go for the first colonization mission which was the great hope of the Earth.

I really figure that wouldn't have happened if Hikaru's VA hadn't died.

I didn't know that.

How is he dead yet Char's original VA is still alive and working?

I don't think Megaroad 1 disappearing means they all died. Could have had something happen and they were forced to colonize a planet. Just didn't have a means of contact.

I figure it will be an eternal mystery myself. It's just a shame because they ask a question that I doubt they will ever answer.

The black hole at the galactic center actually teleported them to an alternate universe, also altering their memories about who they were and what happened before.

*cough*This is how Robotech was born*cough*

Fun trivia, Sagittarius A* was discovered in 1974, but it wasn't until the 2000s that it was determined to be a super-massive black hole (albeit the fact was suspected beforehand)

I believe Kawamori's statement about Megaroad-01 going missing near the galactic center was made in 1987 or so.

Maybe they met the Protoculture and that's why everyone thinks they're extinct because they're near the middle of the universe and they just decided to be cut off. Would have been neat if they explored stuff like that.

Uh oh, need a topic title fix.

It's "Giri Giri Ai" and not "eye" after all.

Belive this came from the OP/ED single CD that just came out (and also had Ikenai Borderline on it):

I still want to know what happened to the cast of Frontier. lol.

Sad Macross 01 lost contact with everyone else.

What the shit how did this thread get to 9 pages since I last posted.

Shun probably knows that, but ai sounds like eye in Japanese. So that's probably the point.

I know.

That was the entire point because that was how the lyrics were translated until like 2 weeks after this thread was made that they leaked the official lyrics being ギリギリ愛 on 2ch and maclog.

Changing the title would mess up my amazing use of emoji too.

I'm on ep 4 of Delta, kind of sucks that Freyja is middle aged already. I bet Kanno took a look at the script and was like, "I'm not touching this." Show would really benefit from her music. Walkure are fucking battlefield liabilities, god damn. Can't they just sing in safety somewhere and just blast that shit out of a fucking loud speaker? What the hell are the Aerial Knights piloting? And yeah...these guys fell right out of a Tales game. Roid Brehm? That's dumb enough to be a Gundam name.

I just started watching this. I've only ever seen Macross Zero, Macross Frontier, and Macross II a long time ago so I'm not sure if I'll dig it or not yet.

ep 6

Based hayate with his gamlin kick. It appears he has surpassed mirage in skills, and cat people next week?

side note episode makes wish the new ace combat was out already.

It's not as good as Frontier, but it's watchable. You should go back and watch the original too though so you can see why the Jenius name means something.

All the stuff you see in Mac 7 is anime as hell but it's not as crazy because a lot of it isn't supposed to be grounded at all like the two instances you're talking about. Even then though, some of the minutia actually makes total sense. Delta is sort of grounded so some of the decisions they make in regards to how they do things is absolutely bonkers. Basara only goes out to sing, he focuses only on that, and he's in a valkyrie himself while doing it. Where Walkure is flying around on the battlefield outside of the valks doing multiple things like singing and civilian protection yet they're a liability themselves in several of the eps where they get targeted and their drones end up running out of power requiring a recharge.

I mean yeah, in absolute terms, it's silly for singing to do that in Mac 7 but it's supposed to be nuts. There's still some sense surrounding that stuff though. I mean, one of the eps has a focus on the clash between the practical reality of the situation and Basara's own ideals. The overall conclusion of that made total sense as I recall too though it's been awhile.

Yeah, the tone is obviously different but at the end of the day I am looking at them as part of the same continuity. The fact that Delta takes place after the events of 7 and even Frontier along with the fact that they have obviously went all-in on researching ways to weaponize song energy makes it easy for me to accept the role of the Walkure team.

I still haven't finished Macross 7, but I almost feel like the way they have developed and organized Walkure might be due to what they learned from the mistake that was Jamming Birds. At least in the one episode where they were used, it seemed like shoving them into a cramped Valkyrie was counter-productive to what they wanted from them in the first place. It removes their agency as they are basically just along for the ride. In that way I think that Walkure, as silly as some of their antics may seem, are just a natural progression of that idea, having learned from previous mistakes.

I honestly really like the idea that the Walkure are more than just a glorified cheerleading squad and actually have individual agency on the battlefield.

As I mentioned earlier, the biggest point for me is that the timeline of this series makes it easier for me to accept Walkure's role. It has the ridiculousness of Macross 7 and the other shows to build upon. Macross 7 was basically universally hated by most fans upon release because it was the first 'true' sequel to the original series and immediately dialed the ridiculous anime stuff to 11 without very much to justify it.

Regarding the liability part, I think it is just the simple theme of 'no risk, no reward'. They have overtly mentioned on multiple occasion how important it is to 'put your life on the line to sing' and I wouldn't doubt that some extent of the abilities are a result of adrenaline pumping through their blood during life or death situations. That's all just conjecture on my part, but it is a pretty common anime trope.

It was really popular and successful in Japan, certainly not universally hated.

Must just be the people in my circle then, as all of the artists and designers I work with think it is an abomination to the Macross name.

Well, except for the soundtrack. Everyone will admit that the music kicks ass.

Try again.

The music is a huge part of a Macross show too. So being successful there is 70% of the battle. I think the animation was pretty good too. Have to admit I wasn't fan of the VF-17s. I like my fighter jets.

Yeah, I guess it is more of a black sheep than it is universally hated. Although, I do know quite a few Macross fans who really do absolutely despise almost everything about it. Except, the music of course!

One memorable comment from an artist I work with is that they did one of the things you are almost never supposed to do with non super-robo mecha design in giving them mouths.

I tried to argue that it made sense since they weren't machines meant for fighting, but were instead just a vehicle for the music itself so giving them mouths made sense.
He then pointed out that there isn't a single scene where the mouths are actually animated or anything. I had to admit he had a point there!

mirage flies like a book
She does seem a bit stiff compared to Hayate. I wonder if she'll ever be able to make her Valkyrie dance the way he does. My god I hope Alto isn't a better pilot than she is, that would just be sad.

Edit

Made it to ep 14 of Frontier, holy shit this show is hype at times.

What an odd thing to be bothered by. It's a custom unit anyhow.
