Mad Max: Fury Road |OT| What a Lovely Day | RT: 98% | Metacritic: 89

12 Years a Slave aint on that list?

I didn't grab the stats, hold on.

12 Years a Slave: 96%
278 fresh, 11 rotten, 9/10 average. Top Critics 49 fresh, 1 rotten, 9.8/10 average.

So yeah, Max would probably get in line behind this one, too. But still - it's up there.

Either way, just going through and grabbing at the high rated ones (and this exercise proves why just looking at the big fat overall percentage doesn't even remotely start to tell you the story) Mad Max: Fury Road is up there with legitimate Oscar Bait of the last 5 years. It has higher scores than a LOT of Academy nominees right now.

Wont see it til tonight, but honestly...if the movie as legit great as its apparently is, no reason they shouldn't be in talk for the Oscars besides genre bias. If Raiders can get nominated, BELIEVE

I joined for Erin Brockovich discussion
I've discovered that it is apparently a cover of the Radiohead song Street Spirit by the group Superhuman, per their Facebook page here. Note that the original song sounds VASTLY different to the cover, and the cover isn't publicly available, though there's a chance Superhuman may post it on their Facebook page as it looks like they've done so with other tracks used in trailers.

As soon as you said Street Spirit, I thought, Ahh, that's what it sounded like. Something about that music made me think I'd heard it before.

Good lord the babadook is so overrated.
I've realised saying something is overrated or underrated is useless, when we're talking about subjective things. I need to stop using such terms that to me come down to insecurity. Who cares if I liked a movie more than others or less than others? They liked it, I didn't, big deal. As long as I can argue my case well enough to convince someone to check it out or avoid, that's all I care for.

For those who watched it could you please suggest which is preferable for this movie - IMAX or Atmos? I really want the sound quality of Atmos but I am not sure if this movie is specifically designed with Atmos in mind in which case seeing it on a larger screen with an inferior sound may not be such a bad option.

Someone please ???

Wasn't trying to stir shit up, just out of all of those movies that was the one that stands out to me as misplaced with the rest.

Just a criticism of rotten tomatoes' system, really. 90%+ doesn't really mean that much, but it seems like it should. Y'know?

Dolby has it listed as an Atmos film.

So is this the new Godfather or something? The reviews are insane. Usually I become a little bit wary at that point but I have to admit I'm intrigued to see the movie

In my experience, IMAX is made weak with 3D (there's no 2D IMAX) so I'd rather not have to wear glasses or see extra motion blur and just appreciate the picture quality. If this film was being shown at 70mm or something that is advertised about having the best quality, then I'd rather jump on that than IMAX 3D.

Decided to dive down that rabbit hole:

Selma: 99%
206 fresh, 3 rotten, 8.7/10 average. Top Critics 42 fresh, 0 rotten, 9.2/10 average.

The Babadook: 98%
163 fresh, 4 rotten, 8.2/10 average. Top Critcs 35 fresh, 1 rotten, 8.2/10 average.

Boyhood 98%
259 fresh, 6 rotten, 9.2/10 average. Top Critics 50 fresh, 0 rotten, 9.8/10 average

Whiplash 95%
229 fresh, 12 rotten, 8.6/10 average. Top Critics 48 fresh, 3 rotten, 8.6/10 average

Birdman: 93%
240 fresh, 19 rotten, 8.5/10 average. Top Critics 46 fresh, 3 rotten, 8.7/10 average

Gravity 97%
296 fresh, 10 rotten, 9/10 average. Top Critics 52 fresh, 1 rotten, 9.2/10 average

Zero Dark Thirty 93%
237 fresh, 17 rotten, 8.6/10 average, Top Critics 46 fresh, 4 rotten, 9.1/10 average

Argo 96%
287 fresh, 13 rotten, 8.4/10 average. Top Critics 48 fresh, 3 rotten, 8.8/10 average

Lincoln 90%
224 fresh, 26 rotten, 8/10 average. Top Critics 46 fresh, 3 rotten, 8.5/10 average

A Separation 99%
148 fresh, 1 rotten, 8.9 average. Top Critics 45 fresh, 0 rotten, 9.3/10 average

Drive 93%
220 fresh, 17 rotten, 8.3 average. Top Critics 41 fresh, 6 rotten, 8.1/10 average

Toy Story 3 99%
276 fresh, 4 rotten, 8.9 average. Top Critics 49 fresh, 0 rotten, 8.6/10 average

The Social Network 96%
275 fresh, 11 rotten, 9/10 average. Top Critics 50 fresh, 0 rotten, 9.4/10 average

So, looking at the last five years, Mad Max: Fury Road appears to be the 4th most critically acclaimed wide-release film according to Rotten Tomatoes, behind Boyhood, A Separation, and The Social Network.

Of course, there's still probably about 100 some reviews that will come in afterwards that's going to bring that score down when the rest of the peanut gallery starts to turn in their reviews.

RT ratings can be deceptive in that EVERY review is distilled into either Yay or Nay and then the average is figured...99% rating simply means that almost all of the reviewers think the movie is worth watching. If they all rated it at 3 out of 5 (worth watching), the RT system would show this as a perfect 100%

Metacritic is probably a more critical judge but the reviews have been glowing thus far so I think (in this case) the rating matches the product.

There is certainly a narrative that could be built around the movie that could carry it to significant Oscar buzz. The movie just needs to be successful first. Miller is a respected director and this is his big return in a lot of ways. The film has to do what Inception did (as a summer blockbuster) and be able to sustain enthusiasm through the rest of the year.

It will surely get all sorts of below-the-line nods (and probably even walk away with a few if they campaign correctly), but it's too early to call for anything else without knowing what the Fall awards season releases are actually going to be this year.

Having a RT score like 99% is a good place to start, though, and it will definitely wind up on a lot of critics' top lists for the year.

Armond White, the living contradiction, was the first Toy Story 3 negative review, I think. I think that's how his whole "infamy" started.

The thing to look at is the average rating. If they all rated 3 out of 5, it be sitting around 6.7 avg rating like Age of Ultron or something. A 9/10 avg rating means damn near every single critic thinks its one of the best films of the year/decade.

I have no option to see it in 2D unfortunately. There is a regular screen in Toronto that runs it in 2D but they have very bad sound quality and for a movie like this that has an amazing soundtrack I dont want to miss on the sound because of 2D. So my choices are

IMAX 3D

Ultra AVX with Atmos and 3D

D-Box with Atmos and 3D

I am confused as hell in deciding which among the three I should go for.

Speaking of which:

Inception 86%
249 fresh, 39 rotten, 8/10 average. Top Critics: 37 fresh, 8 rotten, 7.6/10 average

Fury Road is looking pretty good by comparison, there.

Of course, any Oscar talk is ridiculously premature (as we've said before in this thread) but you're absolutely right - just from the critical reception alone before the movie even officially drops, Warners has some ammo should they choose to press this and try to build a legit campaign around George Miller's return (which is probably the best angle to take).

Box Office will, unfortunately, have to play a part in that too. Which is why the film needs those Kingsman-like legs to get it through this crowded-ass summer.

(there are a lot of aspects of being a movie fan that don't have much to do with just liking movies, anymore. I'm on some fantasy football shit right now. I likely would not be so much on that fantasy football shit if 1) work wasn't as slow as it is right now and 2) I was seeing it before Sunday)

Dude I know what you mean. I don't really understand how fantasy football works but I really ought to be betting money on fucking movie awards races with the amount of specific knowledge of that really specific area I've built up over the last 7 or 8 years.

Just got out of the finnish premiere. Movie is legit. There are now two great Mad Max movies. The shooting is completely different from modern action cinema, you have nods to the old Max movies with quick zooms, pans and footage that has been adjusted to run faster, and it all fucking works to create an apocalypse of brutal action!

This is how you do impactful action. This washes the taste of shit I still have in my mouth over AoU's limp action scenes. Bravo.

Are you going to a real IMAX screen? Seeing as you're in the GTA there is only three (Scotiabank Theater, Cineplex Cinemas Mississauga, Cineplex Cinemas Vaughan). Fury Road has no IMAX shot scenes but you still get a bigger screen than UltraAVX.

UltraAVX with Atmos will have great sound and I find the seats bigger, better recline, and more comfy than IMAX. Of course the screen is smaller than IMAX.

D-Box can be attached to an UltraAVX screen which means you get the perks of UltraAVX with Atmos but it will run you about $25. Depends on how much you enjoy D-Box seats. However D-Box can also be attached to regular screens which means they will be smaller than UltraAVX.

Probably Gravity. Not a fan of everyone talking about it, to be honest. It could have a fucking 0 and I'd still love it

I think it's because no one saw it coming

It's an uncommonly high rating, especially for the genre, so it makes there's an uncommonly high amount of discussion about that rating.

It's a Mad Max movie being released in 2015 without Mel Gibson, not filmed in Australia, that was in development hell for over a decade!

Just trying to recall the last time a RT score got this much talk outside of Rotten watch threads. I did the Gravity OT and I do remember its score was talked about.

Thanks for the info! Yeah there are only three options for IMAX. I am not sure whether the D-Box here is attached to an UltraAVX screen or a regular screen. I think just to be on the safe side I will go for UltraAVX + Atmos combo. Decent screen hopefully and great sound. Seems less risky a proposition compared to IMAX and D-Box.

SilverCity Yorkdale. Closest theater to where I live. I was considering this theater for Ultra AVX as well. Have you been there? Based on your experience which theater would you suggest? I am not very familiar with the theaters here in Toronto and not sure which ones are considered the best.

Yeah we don't have any choices here in finland, no IMAX or anything :)

The sound blew my hearing off so that was good at least. The production team must've had so much fun producing all the props, vehicles and clothing it was a feast to the eyes.

Haven't been to that location but I checked and D-Box is attached to an UltraAVX screen with Atmos.

Holy...

If you took every Michael Bay movie and squished them together you would get about 1% of the awesomeness that is Mad Max

So glad I went to the cinema to watch it
