MAD MAX |OT| Beyond Thunderpoon

I noticed that it didn't unlock until a few missions in but it does unlock eventually....

I'm not too worried about the Ripper DLC. My main concern is the fact that it seems PSN does not detect that I have the game correctly. Did you pre-order it from PSN? Does it still show the purchase button with price when you select Overview on the PS4 menu?

I would really really love to see Mad Max 2 from Avalanche. Mad Max has solid foundations and with stronger and bigger story and side missions (with more interesting characters) and few tweaks Mad Max 2 could be awesome.

The hand to hand combat feels great, really raw and punishing. Fury mode feels like you're breaking bones with each hit, so good. Made me feel like the hits in combat in Arkham games have no impact

The H2H combat is definitely really good in this game.

The only thing I think I'll miss, that I wouldn't have prior, when I play Just Cause 3. Since I'm assuming it will go full guns whereas this has car+h2h combat mostly. Though to be honest I haven't been following JC3 closely, just seems like they wouldn't go all out with melee combat in JC3 like they are in Mad Max. Though JC3 will have motorcycles, helicopters, planes, and that crazy parachute grappling hook awesomeness. The Harpoon in Mad Max is a nice grappling hook equivalent, I abuse it regularly.

Not a bad thing at all, and makes JC3 even more of a day once purchase after playing this. Avalanche is spot on.

I'd love to see a sequel (or even a Saints Row 2 style expansion-sequel using the same map) if only for them to add the 3 biggest omissions from the current combat loop:

1. Motorcycles. This is obvious.

2. War Rigs. Should be expanded versions of the convoy system except they're much bigger events that go across the entire map at random, and if you miss your shot, you'll have to wait a while to see it again. Alternatively, it would also allow for player led convoy defense missions where you could use drivers and fighters from the strongholds to help.

3. Melee combat on top of and in vehicles, and vehicle highjacking in general. This is mostly to make the War Rig concept work. Max needs to be able to jump from vehicle to vehicle and fight every step of the way. Like a weightier, more combat driven mix of Just Cause's stunt system and Sleeping Dogs' action highjacks, and all the War Boys should be able to do the same thing. Chumbucket would drive when you hop out to get your hands dirty, of course. Avalanche has the chops to get this done.

I would add more Story and interesting characters in main and side missions. Maybe fraction system where you could choose who to support and who to avoid etc. Game has huge potential for sequel and Avalanche already made really solid foundations.

I certainly hope they get some good sales so we can get another, more refined Mad Max. The game is great and I'm loving it, but you can see it was missing a more cohesive vision. I think it's due to the game having had such a long and twisted development history and originally being a PS360 game as well.

Now that Fury Road is out, I think they can take even more from it to make it more cohesive and have a clearer direction. Not to mention focusing only on current gen from the start.

Please Avalanche, just do it! Mad Max 2 could be one of the finest games of the generation if done right (and I'm already having a blast with this one)-

War Rigs would be awesome. Motorcycles would be welcome too, though I don't think they are hugely missed here.

Too bad the game will probably bomb and be a one time thing. :(

Game is reaching 200K sold copies on PC alone and it reached 33K concurrent players on steam yesterday. Those are not numbers for game that bombed. It probably won't reach sky high numbers and satisfy WB need for money but it will have decent sales. Also it is in second place on sales chart right behind MGS.

That's good to know! Hopefully it's enough to encourage a sequel.

I think motorcycles would be a big deal because they'd allow for a kind of pesky swarming encounter the game doesn't have right now. With the harpoon/thunderstick cooldowns, getting harassed by 6 motorcycles, some carrying 2 riders, all of whom would be able to board your car, would be intense. You'd never be able simply shoot all of them quickly, and they'd be able to outmaneuver your bashes. Plus think of the possible Road Rash missions and parrying a motorcycle enemy while you're on foot *drool*

The dream is that they'd then combine those enemies with other cars/trucks, a War Rig, and a few ally vehicles to create the ultimate Mad Max chase.

I just hope they make Max talk less and grunt more. The more I watch Fury Road, the more I like feral Max and his reactions to people talking to or about him. The scene where he's collecting Furiosa's weapons in the War Rig's cabin and starts snaping his fingers to the Brides to give him a gun while they openly talk shit about him to his face is hilarious.

One question here: How do you add scrap to the pile in a stronghold? I've gone up to it multiple times but there seems to be prompt to interact unlike the "buildings"? I've also brought home multiple scrapbulances but it's just given me the scrap, not the stronghold. It's the only thing I have remaining to do in jeet's stronghold.

I'm around the 20hr mark, and I feel like this is around a solid 8.5 so far. It really doesn't do all that much new, but the overall package is really very nice and you can tell a ton of effort and care has gone into it. It has definitely caught me off-guard, I can't put it down at the moment.

Positives:
+One of the best atmospheres in a game I can ever recall, reflects fury road perfectly
+Game looks bloody gorgeous
+Sound design is truly fantastic
+Combat is like a more weighty, deliberate version of arkham
+Cars are a little floaty to drive, but really fun, especially with upgrades
+Car combat is fun
+The map is ridicihuge, and the landscape really nicely designed imo
+There is an absolute assload of things to do
+I'm enjoying the characters, voice work and story so far (You have a slightly wacky, weird sidekick and yet somehow he is handled in such a way that he is not incredibly irritating?)

Neutral:
~Addiction potential. I don't generally "do" completionist stuff. However, in mad max the whole feel of the game compels me to ensure i find every bit of scrap and every insignia, no matter how frustrating and how much time i waste in a base. I dunno if it's the atmosphere or the 100% complete additional popup... but it's also just the thought of scanning the map and seeing 1 bit of scrap remaining somewhere. Ugh. I really have been way more obsessive about this than in any other game I can think of, and I can't decide if I like that or not!

(Relatively minor) Negatives:
-Counters and executions can be interrupted, especially by unblockables - can you roll out mid-counter if you see you're about to be interrupted? I thought I may have done this by accident last night, but it was right before I had to shut down for the night so I couldn't test it.
-Manipulating max can be rough and I can't put my finger on why. His turning circle seems tight but he just feels really clunky on foot at times
-Jump seems like an afterthought, and is truly puny
-Wish you could have a custom controller configuration, I've accidentally shot someone in the face who wanted water as well as shooting a person of interest, don't know why I hit B but for it to fire the shotty without aiming manually first seems awkward to me
-Pressing A to do everything is slightly irritating in this game, since you sometimes have to hold it, sometimes don't, and pressing A will contextually drop a weapon if you're not right beside the thing you meant to press A at!
-I'd rather auto aim was either constantly on lock or not at all. You can't turn it off, can you? It seems to fluctuate whether your aim will "stick" to someone or veer off at random
-If a scrap collection crew is active in an area, they should work for all available forms of scrap. Seems like if you're going below a speed threshold, or the car is empty when you destroy it, you have to pick up the scrap by yourself

You need 500 scrap for the small load, then it should turn blue and let you build it. Then 1000 for the medium and 1500 for the large, I think. I'm doing the medium right now.

huh. i'm sure i've had over 1500 when I walked up to it before. i take it it's just a standard hold A prompt as per the normal buildings? i'll try again tonight, thanks!

i remember reading someone say they have found no gameplay benefit to it at all, but i think it gives you a legend achievement or something iirc.

I just wasted 500 scrap, then. lol

It's out of character for Max to do something without getting something else in return!

I really hope we get War Rig/motorcycle DLC. It'd be a shame to have to wait for a Mad Max 2 for that. And that's if a sequel ever happens.

Anyone know how to stop the mouse cursor from appearing during gameplay? I'd rather play this on mouse and kb, because the default controller scheme is pretty terrible.

Anyone else having frame-rate issues in PinkEyes territory?
Playing PS4 digital version, everything has run just fine, until I come in contact with a convoy.

Fram rate really turns to shit on Xbox One the further you get into the game. Wouldn't surprise me if it was the same on PS4.

I read someone in this thread asking for performance on consoles, saying it was getting worse the further he got in.

Same for me, the chugging is real, the framerate is all over the place, PS4 version here.

And it seems to be getting worse the further I advance. IT's really annoying sometimes.
I was the one who said it was getting worse as I progressed. Still experiencing it, and yes, it's annoying. It's not just in taxing situations, either - seems almost random. I really hope this is a patchable problem. If this is another CPU-related issue, then this is going to be a loooong generation for console gamers.

I haven't even
ventured into Gutgash's Territory yet after getting the ShovelFace body
and I've already hit the 'Death Walker' rank with an almost fully upgraded Max, Magnum Opus (as far as you can go at this point) + Jeet's Stronghold.

There's just so much side stuff to do =P

What's the benefit to this anyway?

Completing the Stronghold Upgrades, it is one of the requirements. Edit: Don't think there's a specific benefit though. 2nd Edit: As in, once you finish getting the 500, 1000, and 1500, then it says "Stronghold Complete". Assuming you have everything else done.

Yup, just like the others.

Searching around a bit more, found this related to buying Mad Max from another region as it's still not available here in Japan...

AllowPurchaseFromRestrictedCountries No
PurchaseRestrictedCountries JP Japan

:/ Fucking hell... Every other country has it except Japan. This shit is ridiculous.

You can still have someone buy it for you provided they're not located in Central/South America, Eastern Europe, South-east Asia (click the links for specific countries) or Turkey. While you won't be able to actually play the game without the help of a VPN, what you could do is unlock it, load it up once (required thanks to Denuvo), then switch to Offline Mode. When using OM, the "Play" button won't revert back to "Pre-load" after you've disconnected from the VPN.

Enjoying the game so far, started it this morning, but only thing that concerns me is, is there alot of grinding in it?

Well if you do right things early not so much. Also you can get tons of scrap in storms but it is very dangerous if you are not prepared (weak car, low health).

I don't think so. The game hands out Griffa tokens like lollies and scrap is fairly easy to come by after you've "dismantled" a few camps and provided you make an effort to commandeer any scrapulances you come across, to say nothing of the Scrap Crew projects that generate scrap while the game isn't running (since I'm not quite there yet myself).

Is the Top Dog in Jeet's Territory safe to go after without messing up anything story related? I know there's a Top Dog that you have to beat for story reasons but it's a different one.

Game is fantastic. About 10 hours in aND easily one of my top 5 open world games, and I've played them all. The atmosphere is stunning, no idea why reviewers were bashing it for being boring.

I can see it being a drag to review. Game is brilliant in nice 2-4 hour chunks. When I try to play longer than that, it starts to grind, and I notice the repetitive aspects much more.

If I had to knock out 40 hours in a weekend, I might feel differently about the game.

I second all this.

For me, [though I suppose it wouldn't totally fit a Mad Max game (though it's not impossible either)] I'd love to recruit npcs that have different skill sets (gunner, repair, driver, etc) and assign them to either other support vehicles or to the vehicle max is driving (sort of like how Chum mans the harpoon, but his aim is perfect and I'd rather it be based on the skill of npc).

But honestly? As much as I love Mad Max I think I'd want what I'm talking about in a different franchise (with flamethrowers, machine guns, rockets, etc) and let Max be his semi-loner self in this franchise.

I guess I'll forever long for a crossbreed of Autoduel and Roadwar 2000/Europa in a modern open world shell similar to Mad Max. But at least I have Mad Max! This game is amazing.

Anyone in the US buy this from Nuuvem? Its back down to around 25$, but I can't tell if its region locked. I don't see anything, but would rather be safe.

It's not, but you may need a VPN to buy it.

This game really feels like the text book definition of 'cult classic' to me.

That is to say, if you can make your peace with its glaring problems, you'll probably love it and defend it vehemently. If those problems are significant for you, you probably wont make it out of hour three.

Alternate or default, I just cannot come to grips with the control scheme in this game. When you borrow so heavily from other games, but make significant changes to the controls everyone is used to, it's like fighting muscle memory to play it. I'm like 15 hours in and I'm STILL accidentally shooting my gun in combat.

I 100% agree with the people ITT saying a lot of the open world tasks feel like busy work. Not only is the game Ubisoft-esque, but at times it actually feels early Assassin's Creed-esque (that's bad). When you walk up to a stranger parked just outside a base, to get the SAME bit of intel every time (there's always a side entrance to the base, lads) it seriously feels like the AC1 template of eavesdropping before an assassination. The scarecrows and snipers are fun for a while, but eventually you're just taking them down to tick them off your checklist. The convoys don't go anywhere. They just go in a circle waiting to be killed. That's not a convoy. The bases have decently elaborate design and room for exploration but generally speaking, they are so samey.

... but with all that said, I'm in the pro-Mad Max camp. The combat is still satisfying. The world is still fantastic for any fans of the fiction. Photo mode is a joy. The car combat is aces. The story is nothing but the dialog is solid if you are all about the Mad Max style. Chumbucket will probably be overlooked in some 'New Character of the Year' awards this year, which is a travesty.
