Pete was a douchebag, he was also right. What is Joan trying to do? She doesn't handle accounts. Pete was probably an asshole about it more than necessary because his importance in the agency keeps diminishing with every episode. :lol

I thought this episode was weak to be honest, overall. Don's becoming a really dull character I have to say.

People keep referring to Bob as a CDC guy, but he was working at SCDP at the beginning of the season, before the merger.

I wondered when they'd get Ginsberg talking about the voices again. My new theory is that Bob has been a red herring this whole time and Ginsberg will end up killing Megan by the end of the season.

When he had his breakdown last night all I could think of was how insanely jealous he was of Megan when he found out she and Don were getting married.

Does anyone know why they stopped publishing the soundtracks for Mad Men? I have the soundtracks to Season 1 and 2, but I don't think they made any more :(

Not the same thing, but Rolling Stone has a Mad Men-playlist on Spotify they seem to be updating after each episode (not updated since the middle of May though):
Spotify

Anyway, team Bob Benson!

I'm so afraid of what might go down. There's this eerie feeling throughout the entire season, something bad is bound to happen.

Absolutely this! The whole season has had such a weird vibe throughout. I also still think Don is the one who had the heart attack at the beginning of the season. Sometimes the whole season just feels like a dream and maybe everything is happening is all in Don's head. I know that's not the case but that's how it feels

I missed the first 6-7 minutes because my DVR failed to record. Caught them this AM on demand, but that made this a confusing episode. Mad Men moves quickly!

Loved this episode. I think I need to rewatch the whole thing to understand what Ted and Co are really up to. Cornering all the good accounts? Going to pull their own "Sit Down, Have a Seat?"

given all the Megan speculation, that scene in the bedroom felt very... ominous.

SC&P exists because of Chevy. But Chevy is being difficult. Ted believes that if they can just find the right magical executive everything will be fine. Jim's too old for that. He's planning for what happens if they lose Chevy -- which is, most likely, that the knives come out and people get fired or sidelined. So he wants to make sure his people survive and his accounts stay with the firm, giving him the power. As he said in the beginning, if this doesn't work, he was against it.

The Benson thing was a straightforward setup. He sends the inexperienced account man and the visibly cracking writer to deal with Roger's account, so that if they blow it, as they almost certainly will, he can blame them for the fuckup and get rid of them. When you assume that Cutler sees Chevy falling apart, shipping Bob to Detroit makes a lot more sense -- then he can clean them all up in the wreckage.

Looks like the new firm is about to split up as quickly as they formed... An unhappy marriage born of a decision Don made on a whim. I hope they don't break off and form a new firm or anything like that again. I get that this season is all about callbacks to the early seasons (see! Now they're all working at a firm called Sterling Cooper again!) but I don't think another "Shut the Door, Have a Seat" will happen, nor do I want it to. Don has had his chance at a rebirth, a second life (seriously... How many times has he been reborn on this show again? At least three times by my count) but surely its too late for him to undo his two current marriages and start anew.

Can be applied to so many things...brilliant way to word it.

BTW, I really enjoyed how bad Joan was at accounts, despite thinking she knows all there is to it. Peggy was relating to the guy and warming him up, and Joan shut her down.

Wait, did Joan really think Peggy got where she is because she slept with Don?

I don't think she's that oblivious. I think she was referring to Don's obvious coddling of Peggy in the early goings. If you re-watch those early episodes you can see Don taking Peggy on as a sort of pet project. Showing her the ropes and generally taking it easier on her than anyone else. Joan was right in that regard. Don was grooming Peggy and she was sheltered for a good while.

Then of course Peggy opened her mouth about the sleeping with Don thing, and I think Joan took that as a crack against her for sleeping with the Jaguar rep. The look on Joan's face after that exchange tells how deep it cut, anyhow.

No that was Peggy twisting the knife insinuating how Joan became a partner.

See, that's what I thought too, but the Rolling Stone review seems to have misinterpreted that.

Seeing people break the rules, be they male or female is a nasty thorn in Peggy's side because, as she reminds Joan, she worked her way up. Except Joan reveals she always thought Peggy's success was the result of having slept with Don.

I can see how someone could arrive at that conclusion, but I think Joan has earned a little more credit than that. The Rolling Stone comment only works if you perceive Joan as fairly blind. While it's possible, she's always struck as me as very perceptive. I just don't think she's dumb enough not to see how Don treated Peggy differently than everyone else, mistresses/secretaries included.

I agree with this. I don't think Joan was suggesting that Peggy slept with Don -- there are things she doesn't understand, but sexual politics aren't one of them. All Joan meant was that Peggy had Don, at executive level, clearing the ground for her, while Joan had nobody. Remember when Harry took TV away from her? She could really have used a partner (in the firm-running sense) then.

I think there's also an implication that Don did Peggy's work for her and made her look good, though, which is at least as offensive as adultery to somebody like Peggy.

Next season is the final season of Mad Men correct? This season has been pretty good so far and I agree with the creepy undertones. Something bad is coming.

Two Coffees is probably what Pete wishes he was - Don 2,0; snuck in out of nowhere, working his way to the top. Young Don meeting Roger the first time looked just as wide eyed and eager. Bob probably isn't even his real name!

Really entertaining episode. The Joan-Peggy stuff was killer.

If something huge is going to happen it'll have to happen in the next 2 episodes. The finales have never been cliffhanger-like.

What if he attempts suicide but doesn't die? It's the cliffhanger at the end of the season and we just see him in a hospital bed next year?

Seeing how everyone else would react to a suicide attempt by Don would be very interesting

I think Peggy was kinda zinging Joan for having slept her way into a partnership, yeah - but I also think Joan really, honestly, believes Peggy slept with Don at some point. That's been a thing from as far back as Season two, hasn't it? And I don't think it was ever resolved, or even brought up in front of Peggy until this episode. Part of the reason I liked that exchange was due to the fact Peggy finally got it out there, because I also interpreted it as YEARS of her knowing people at the office thought she fucked her way into her position, and those people likely thought that BECAUSE of Joan's backbiting, and she finally got that out there to Joan's face like "No. *I* didn't..."
