Great episode. I loved Pete's mom telling him that Kennedy got shot and he doesn't believe her. Perfect picture of what's happening to him.

I am surprised and pleased that Bob turned out to be such an entertaining character. But I guess when he saw Bert go out he knew he needed to hitch his wagon to somebody. Roger's firing scene was truly amazing.

Peggy is going to be a wreck next episode.

Poor Margie. Just as she foresaw, she was fired in an aside.
 
I wonder if there's a count of the number of times death has been mentioned in some way.

I just rewatched the entire series and it completely slipped my mind to do it.

That was great. Back to back episodes where multiple characters contributed.

So what exactly was wrong with Joan? Or was that just a device to make the audience sympathetic towards Bob as he's sacked? He should have fallen down the elevator.

I don't think he hates Ted personally, but he resented that (in his view) CGC never accomplished anything worth being given equal footing as SC in the public's mind. Plus, CGC were like sharks after SC's every scrap (Mohawk, Jai Alai, Clearasil, etc.)

A & B type personalities is how I've always seen it. Ted is pretty patient and outgoing.

Don is too cool for that shit. "I'm going to stand over here" comes to mind from Roger's mothers wake.

I think their creative process during the episode showed this as well.

Ted sits with the creative team and throws ideas around.

Don locks himself away, drinks and then comes up with something that the team is supposed to figure out.

In the end in the conference room the partners sit down to decide who is going to be let go in the merger (downsizing of employee's since there will be redundancies) and Margie is let go. She is even expecting that since as soon as she meets Peggy she tell's Ginsberg and Stan it was nice knowing them.

Also we see Bob keeping his job due to Joan (and a lesser degree Pete) making a strong case for keeping him.
 
Good episode, though Don went too far, too damn far.

Loved the cut to plane, highlight of the episode.

Ted is great, he seemed like a jerk before but he is one of the greatest men in the show right now.

PS. I loved the contrast between SCDP and CGC copywriters. CGC ones being uptight, shirt and tie, completely stressed, noting down every word that was being said, while Stan and Ginsberg were dressed casually with wild facial hair and looked like they didn't give a singe fuck. That was great.

I wonder of how much of that system is Peggy? From the short times we've seen CGC, it looks like Peggy runs that place with an iron fist.
 
Can American's not say margarine properly?

Don got crushed in this episode, it's happened before but this felt like the beginning of the end.

It really was fascinating watching Don emit this dominance he thought he had over Sylvia and then have it crumble in front of him. I can't remember the last time he was in creeper territory like that (Bobby Barrett?). The end of the sixties are near. Everyone is moving forward, except him.

I always get fascinated with the historical context of an episode when they work them into the show, like RFK. I found part one of CBS coverage of the 1968 California primary (and leading to RFK's assassination). http://youtu.be/MgzWNOd3fys (Kennedy speaks in part 4, the assassination in part 5)

What's the deal with the absence of Dawn and the gloomy looks by her desk? Did I miss something about this or was it supposed to be a mystery?
 
Great, great episode. Loved the getting together of CDC and SCDP. Ted getting drunk was great, but then he got Don back in the plane. Bob Benson was also great in this episode, as was sterling firing Burt Peterson :lol

Probably my favorite episode of the season so far. I really dislike the fact that they're actually going through with the merger (feels a bit contrived, imo, especially because of the Peggy factor) but Don was just such an asshole in this episode. The wheels are really coming off and he's finally met someone who's willing to stand toe to toe with him.
 
I didn't read the posts that happend while the show was live. But Lindsay Weir is like fine wine. My god is she beautiful. I hope that was recognized. She has easily eclipsed Sally's teacher as Don greatest triumphs.
 
Well the thing is I did it frame by frame, I don't know how else to do it. So now I've done white/red/white/red etc. Guess white/white/red/red/white/white etc. should slow it down enough then. Click, click... :P

I think I would enjoy having Ted as a boss. He seems to be a nice mix of productivity and creativity.

Don would be an absolute fucking nightmare of a boss.
 
I read that New Yorker piece, and while I can agree facets of Don Draper/Dick Whitman's past feel contrived and maybe heavy-handed, I dunno, I guess I didn't notice or cared because of how it's spread out over six seasons. Stockpile 'em like that in the article and yeah, it becomes less impactful. I don't remember how much information about Dick we had at the time Adam hung himself.

The way Nussbaum talks about how the side characters got more interesting while Don is an anchor... kind of feels like the point in the context of the sixties, no?
 
Mad Men was overdue for a critical cooling off. I believe The Sopranos went through a similar phase, though in my opinion, The Sopranos actually dropped off quite a bit more in quality than Mad Men. I honestly don't think Mad Men has dropped off that much, in spite of some slight wheel spinning this season.

I do think Mad Men could have been wrapped up in six seasons, but I'm mostly fine with the decision to go to seven.
