Did a search and came up with nothing so hopefully not old

Jon Hamm, the star of Mad Men, took part in a violent university hazing in 1990 at the University of Texas that led to criminal charges, according to court and school records.

The Emmy-nominated actor had not previously been publicly linked to a lawsuit filed by a member of a fraternal social organization who said he was severely beaten, dragged with a hammer and had his pants lit on fire. In the 1991 lawsuit the inductee said Hamm participated “till the very end”.

Criminal records show Hamm, now 44, was charged with hazing and received probation. A separate charge of assault was dismissed. The chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity, a male group of students, permanently disbanded.

...

According to the lawsuit Hamm became “mad, I mean really mad” after the 20-year-old student joining the fraternity failed to recite things he was supposed to memorize about Hamm and other fraternity members. For Hamm his list included “Young Bobby”, ”MC Hammer” and “UT Football Punching Bag”.

The pledge, Mark Allen Sanders, said Hamm went on to set his jeans on fire, shove his face in dirt and strike him with a paddle.

“He rears back and hits me left-handed, and he hit me right over my right kidney, I mean square over it,” Sanders said in the lawsuit. “Good solid hit and that, that stood me right up.”

Sanders said he needed medical care and withdrew from the school. Court records show the lawsuit was dismissed in 1993. Attempts to reach Sanders were unsuccessful on Thursday and his former attorney did not return a message.

Four other fraternity members were charged and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor hazing charges. The Sigma Nu chapter was shut down and never reopened on campus.

Kind of rough. I don't know what to think. One the one hand this was over 20 years ago, and the legal process apparently played out, and you'd think he's a changed man. Still...

I wonder how the victim feels now that he sees the guy that beat the shit out of him attain so much success in life.

Disheartening to hear as Hamm is super down-to-earth and funny in the many podcast appearances I've listened of him. Dude loves the alt comedy scene and gels wonderfully with it.

If it's any consolation, Jon Hamm is in the midst of a messy breakup with his longtime partner, just did an (unsuccessful?) stint in rehab for alcoholism, is aging like a slice of unrefrigerated Hamm...

...and will never win an Emmy.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
While people can change, he did this as an adult.

Not arguing with that, but 19 year old men typically still have a lot of maturing and rewiring of the brain before their mid 20s. This still makes him an asshole though.

I'm torn. While I was willing to crucify those non-famous frat boys a few weeks back I'm more than ok with calling this a youthful discretion on Jon Hamm's part.Though racism>hazing, still a shitty thing to do. Darn you double standards!

If he hasn't done anything like that for a long time then I assume he's changed. Until he relapses with his anger in such a way that it causes someone harm my opinion of him hasn't changed.

Tall, white, ridiculously handsome, football star. I'd be surprised if he wasn't a douche at 20.

I'm not going to condemn him 25 years later because he was a dick as a young adult.

KARATE! KARATE!

He's not going to on some pant burning spree 25 years later, I think he's alright. I sure as hell wasn't quite same person 10 years ago let alone 25.

Lots of people you admire are assholes or have done shitty things in life.

This puts him in Mark Wahlberg levels of shiftiness.

He was a piece of shit at 19. He's in his 40s now. I really don't think he needs to explain for this. I'm sure he's matured.

lol

he was 19, why do so many people make excuses for adults

Because young adults's cognitive faculties arent fully matured. It's not an excuse for bad behaviour, it's more a realization that people's behaviour in their early 20s isnt necessarily indicative of the way theyll be in their 30s and 40s or even late 20s.

He actually does feel bad about it. But he has learned to let it go as people should who commit terrible mistakes. He said he would like to find the guy and apologize, but it isn't something he has been able to do. It was forever ago (probably before you were born...) and he was a stupid kid.

Because he was in college still? Legally an adult, but still a kid. I would never do now (at 30) what I did at 19.
yeah sorry I don't consider college aged sociopathic hazing abuse something you handwave away as being "stuff you did as a kid!"

i'm sure no one is defending his actions in those days, but to say someone would act the same whether they're 19 or 40 is pretty ludicrous. A lot can change in 20 years... not saying Jon Hamm has but everyone was dumb as a teenager, lets be real
