pants lit on fire

The accusers pants were on fire?

Ladies and gentlemen. If you have an accuser with pants on fire, what sort of person do you believe him as?

It's so queer how we put celebrities on such high pedestals that we're disappointed when they turn out to be people with character flaws, even severe ones.

They play fictional characters that we either like or are attracted to in the most superficial way possible. They're not our friends or family, and yet we judge them harshly when they screw up or have screwed up in the past - and they're barely real to us.

Such a strange phenomenon.

I think a few of us heard him on podcasts which is a much different more personal medium. It's surprising that someone who sounded so down to earth and well-humored would do something like this.

I watched people do worse at 17 in high school.. including curb stomping people; then just 4 years later ran into them at bars and they were practically crying apologizing for being such dirtbags in high school. Each and every one of them came from abusive families. It didn't excuse their actions but it put them in context for me; people definitely can change.. and most violent people were abused at some point (in my experience.)

I've also seen people be kind at 19 and then turn out to be pathological liars and borderline sociopaths.

Really shitty thing to do objectively. He was charged with some crimes; looks like they were a bit lenient, and he has generally stayed out of trouble since.

A success story of rehabilitation really. People can go in all different directions from these ages into their 20's and 30's.

At 19 making dumb mistakes is fine. Abusing somebody physically/emotionally is not something that can be waved off as an innocent "kids being kids" type of deal.

That isn't just a bad choice, it's cruel.

2 things...

1. Your name is amazing
2. He didn't record those 25 years ago

I'm sure there's going to be at least 1 poster in this thread that will be an apologist for Hamm yet condemned someone within the past year for swiping cigars. My dad lost his parents in his teens too, he wasn't lighting people on fire smh.
Did anyone say that? Stop projecting. He was charged and got probation, so it's not like he got off.
There are plenty of apologists here bc it's Jon Hamm. Had the recent SAE scandals revealed they set a pledge afire there'd be less excuse making.
You red flag a person trying to get better then you want to punish someone for the rest of their life after they were already punished for it?

Now that's fucked up.
Probation for lighting someone on fire is hardly a punishment.

The set him on fire thing, there article says he went to set his jeans on fire, there is no other mention of if he did actually do it. It's a scummy thing to attempt but it doesn't sound like he actually succeeded.

If someone is that demented to set someone on fire, in a frat setting you can't put sexual assault past them. Good thing he got caught by police and Hamm's propensities got nipped in the bud and he assumedly straightened himself out.

Yeah but if it worked and he never did it again then mission accomplished. That's the whole point, right? Unless punishment for a crime is supposed to accomplish something else?

The only people who truly believe 19 year olds are adults are 19 year olds who want to believe they are adults. At 19 you are little more than a child who can suddenly buy cigarettes. If anything you get dumber and less mature once you hit 18 and stay that way well into your 20's.

As far as we know. It's possible he raped the entire cast from Matthew Weiner down to "Duck" Phillips.

how is this just surfacing now?

Probably a slow news day + people wanting to find more dirt on Jon Hamm with his recent personal troubles. Celebrity news, it's vicious.

As said in the article, none of these records were sealed, so anyone could have found this anytime they wanted really.

This was so many years ago, there's a good chance he's changed a lot since then, what the hell do you people want from him? Go to jail for it NOW?

How is this news? No, seriously, who is being paid to root through celebrity records to find click-worthy news bits and report on them? And in the Associated Press, not even some shitty tabloid? What the hell is their job description? Senior celeb stalker? I don't particularly care about Jon Hamm, and don't watch Mad Men. This strikes me as another one of those "look at this shit that happened 20+ years ago!" things like the Mark Walberg bar fight story which turns out to have been misreported. So I ask again, whose job is it to drag people through the mud publicly with old-ass news that has no context on whatever current problems the press is trying to work into a big narrative soup? Because that person is an asshole, and should be shamed for their shitty work.

Coincidentally, the only guy whose head is bigger than Hamm's.

Jon Hamm has a big head? And it's bigger than Matt Damon's? This has to be explained to me.

Jon Hamm is the darling of podcasts because he's actually funny. Where is it that he has a big head?

LOL holy fuck that is disturbing. I started to red flag Draper due to that rehab stint but this is fucked up. Lighting a motherucker on fire?? Shoulda never been hired for Don Draper.

Lol @ apologists.
Why? Why should he not be hired? Should a past mistake you paid for ruin your life forever?

What he did aside, I find the fraternity stuff in the US baffling. You would be laughed at for even suggesting it and being forced to do stuff, that shit wouldn't fly.

Most people are assholes when they are 19. Source: just look at this board.

It happened 25 years ago, jeez. Was what he did messed up? Sure. Does it require "INTERNATIONAL OUTRAGE AND BOYCOTTS (TM)"? Depends on how anal you are about someone being an asshole in college at the age of 19, 25 years ago.

This puts him in Mark Wahlberg levels of shiftiness.

Unless he blinded the kid, no, it doesn't.

That's not even funny. And I know whats funny because I know that all blackface is not funny. Also it was written by the women Tina Fey.

It's a good thing you specified 'the women Tina Fey' because I'm always getting her and the Macross mech Tina Fey confused for one another.
