Madden hate (360)

I was playing the madden 06 demo earlier and the whole time i was wondering why this game got hated on so much... what's the problem? so there's a few features missing... all i need in a footbabll game is exhibition, season, and online play... don't need franchise or any of that stuff

pros:
------
- graphics are great, definitely a leap...even on SDTV...i was really surprised
- animation is solid... whats up? whats wrong with it?
- nice presentation and commentary
- new gameplay enhancements like the cone

cons:
----
- no grass
- the AI (at least in the demo) wasn't real good, i got well over 200 yards recieving with TO a couple time...and these were 1 minute quarters....maybe it was on easy, idk.

thats all the negative i can think of... the field looks like shit but other than that whats with the hate on this? seems like it's blind EA bashing... i bet most of the detractors haven't even played it on 360
I give it a 8.8/10... btw Madden 07' will be the greatest football game ever, guaranteed. :D

Wow, impressions of the demo? You should be able to provide a more precision score of the full game then 8.8/10. C'mon, we want details!!!

I think the commentary is HORRID, actually. That's probably the dullest, most bare boned commentary I've heard in a Madden game since pre-Playstation days.

Also, woeful lack of extras. I love the mini-games/training camp modes in most sports games nowadays, and Madden 360 had NONE.

Nice try, but it's a football game... it's not a 1 level demo like Kameo or something. What you see is what you get.

The real question is what can EA do with the Madden 07 Demo to get an 8.9 from you in the fall?

Well you are in luck. EA has recruited famous truf guru George Toma to ensure the blades of grass and sodding will meet your expectations.

I don't think they're the same engine. Supposedly the actual gameplay is broken. Blocking, pass defense, etc. None of these are as good as the curent gen counterpart.

I guess I take up the other 10% for my hatered of Madden 06 on the current gen.

Flying Finn + Updated Rosters = NFL 2K6 for the win!

How about how the 360 version doesn't have coach challenges? That was cut out from the current-gen versions.

Seriously, is this a joke account? I can't believe someone's reviewing a demo of a game that's been out for months and is telling critics to go back home. I don't personally dive deep into football games, but I know people who do and if you feel like "what you see is what you get" out of a demo, then you're probably not qualified to say whether or not anything was cut out.

It's a football game, though. Is that hard to understand? It's not one small level of an adventure game or rpg or whatever. As far as gameplay mechanics go, you have everything available to you in the demo...

Not to defend the game, but I don't really get coach challenges in video games anyway. The game should just make the right call all the time, I guess it's more "real" if the refs mess up, but I don't really see the point.

I think there should be an option to turn it off, but I like it. It forces people to stay on their toes and pay attention to the game. And as you already pointed out, it adds another facet of realism.

EDIT: To make a weird comparison, it's akin to the random spawning items in SSBM. Sure, a random drop can indiscriminately fuck you or save your ass with little regard for skill, but it certainly keeps things interesting.

I kinda agree with this too. Especially since they have never been executed well in any football game I've played.

I always thought that gameplay on 360 madden was fine, graphics were pretty, and features were stripped down and embarrassingly omitted....isnt that pretty much the deal? didnt this game come out 3 months ago?

While I have not played the demo, "just the actual game" - does the demo allow you to test out the franchise mode and other features outside an exhibition? If not then you are still only getting a taste, just as you do in all those other genres. Of course since Madden 360 is so featureless and bare-bones it is a bad example.

Alot of people, like me, buy football games just for the multiplayer and never touch the franchise mode.

Alot? Was this based on a Harris or Gallup poll or is your definition of "alot" simply based on pulling that word out of your ass?

Yet somehow defying the odds of (alot of people not using the franchise) pretty much every sports game this generation has a franchise mode in it. Every year adding more and more to that part of the game.

For any of you who are "blessed" :lol to have the 360 version like myself, can you verify if roster updates have been posted for our system? I read that the current gen systems had an update.

overall, i have fun with madden on 360, but here are my complaints

random stadium pans (oh look, its a wall in the stadium ramp!)
stupid scoreboard displays
tinny announcer voice (now I miss madden)
no reviewable plays
juke button could use work
spin button not as responsive

I don't get the hate either. It could be a little faster and my GOD the controls are wierd but for a launch effort it was quite nice. Excellent menus too.

i hate madden 360 because they tried to fix things that weren't broken. it took them a whole generation but they were coming really close to perfecting the gameplay. with 360 its as if they threw all that work out the window. the game just feels weird. it feels closer to an NFL2K game than Madden, (which is a very BAD thing). The radio commentary idea was a good one, but executed horribly. Anyone who disagrees has obviously never heard what a REAL NFL radio telecast sounds like. There are usually 2 or more guys, and way, WAY more chatter. The frame rate is lower, which IMO does not fly given that the previous gen games ran at a silky smooth frame rate (most of the time). The control scheme is OK once you get used to it I guess, but once again. Why even change it? It was perfectly fine already. Also, they completely left out things that anyone with half a brain would have remembered. Why doesn't the camera zoom back in? What possible reason could there be for it to stay zoomed out, other than "we completely forgot to code that piece of the game"? oh, and the whole IN YOUR FACE NFL EXPERIENCE direction they took with the game is pretty shitty, especially considering they accurately mapped about 1/8th of the NFL players' faces.

I say, ditch the stupid on the field style presentation, or at least give players a choice between that and TV style coverage. Put the old control schemes back in as an option. Fix the stupid frame rate. Give us some working camera angles, and make the gameplay not feel so random, and put in all the modes they conveniently left out. Then maybe 2007 will be up to the level of current gen Madden games.

What the hell? Some guy named Oatmeal started this thread......now its eeyore the donkey? Can anyone explain to me how this would happen?

I'm sorry to bring it up in a Madden thread, but is there someway to update the rosters in NFL 2K5 besides going in manually and literally changing rosters ... :D ... I cant get enough of that game

Never forget that EA did NOT deliver... Not even close.

He probably requested a name change and did an avatar change.

Who would I ask about a name change? I asked one of the mods (Forget which) and got a no.

Back on topic: There is one huge problem in madden 06 360: The fact that I can't seem to finish a game without it freezing, leaving me unable to finish.

take away the awesome graphics, amazing presentation, terrific player collision detection, a running game that does not feel like pinball, plus a bunch of other stuff I overlooked due to my undying love for a franchise that really has not changed much since it debuted on the PS2 back in 2000 ----- NFL2K is an awful football game.

Fixed...

It's funny how people always leave out the amount of effort put in both series this generation. If you look at the original NFL 2K and how it evolved each year there was a concerted effort to make a better football game (in all areas). Madden on the other hand simply built that engine for that PS2 version and has slightly tweaked it each year, throwing in a couple new features, which they conveniently remove for the first next gen effort.

I think everyone and their dog knows the 360 lineup was rushed a tad. The game is quite different from the Xbox and PS2 versions so it's not like they just took the Xbox engine, removed some features then sat with their thumbs in their asses for months waiting for the launch.

Also, you forgot some other NFL2k series staples. Buggy stats, AI that looks like it belongs in Pee-Wee Football 2005. Lack of defensive assignments such as QB Spy. Busted running game that doesn't feel like "pinball" because you can just tap Y over and over and get 20 yards a carry. Lastly, my favorite, Matrix style DB animations where they perform their favorite Trinity moves in super slow motion while the WR blazes by in normal speed laughing.

Oh yea and the commentary that uses the same old jokes from NFL2k on Dreamcast. I understand Madden barely changed a word from Madden 2001 to 2006 but atleast he stayed on topic. Hearing another stupid doughnut joke and "you can't coach that" reference got old wayyyyyyy back on NFL2k2.

Yes with an action replay, a bunch of different rosters exist. Check Operation Sports and you will find plenty of people still workig on the games rosters, sliders, etc. There is also an editor to make changing them yourself easier. Plus the biggest benefit of the editor is you can play this past years (hence the NFL 2K6 reference) schedule. Plus you will have the upcoming 2006-07 schedule once it is released (aka NFL 2K7).

I'm not saying Madden is better than the NFL2k series... I hate EA for buying exclusivity and would probably rather be playing NFL2k6 right now, but I'm just saying I don't think Madden 06 for 360 deserved all the hate it got. As for the target video... EA really should've stated that it was a target for the entire generation and not specifically 06'... of course, that would've killed all the hype for the game so I guess we all got duped.

Well on the running game I was reffering to fixing the issue of "mario running" by the use of getting skinny. You know fixing the existing problem. I limit my "Y" tapping but only play offline so I am not as affected by it. How many years does it take for EA fans to complain just to get them to work on it? Come on EA said it took the next generation just to have players jump over a pile? WTF is that logic, I can do that in 2K5. EA goes out and spends thousands of dollar capturing a ref, yet they can't even get them to show up on the field. Go watch some replays of any Madden and the o-line and d-line (current or next gen) then put 2K5 back in. Not even close, in 2K they actually block like a lineman would (straight up, pulling, etc). What do Madden fans get in return, ye ol suction blocking. The running game is more the you going ape-crazy hitting the "Y" button. It's like playing NCAA 06 and using the R-Analog juke all the time. Common Sense says to limit it to keep it enjoyable.

Look I buy Madden every year, I just prefer the 2K series. I even play the crap out of NCAA 06 which I think is better then Madden 06 this year, thanks in part to a far better atmospehere and full use of the R-Trigger. Of course loving college football helps. In the future I will have no choice which is the saddest part as I felt the competition helped to keep EA at least try to make the game worth a yearl $49.99 purchase and more then a glorified roster update.

I don't really care if the blocking looks realistic or not. Or anything about refs on the field. So long as the gameplay is there. I won't argue Madden looks better because it doesn't, 2k5 animates and looks much better. VC just focused 100% on the graphics and 0% on the gameplay though :lol
