Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers |OT| Expansion 3 Out Now!

Chairman Yang

if he talks about books, you better damn well listen
Expansion's cool so far, but am I missing something, or is the first new challenge (against Jace) bugged? It seems like one of my cards that reduces artifact costs by 1 doesn't work.

Also, the second challenge took me like 30 seconds to beat.

EDIT: Never mind, I didn't realize that the mana costs in my hand already took the Sculptor into account.

It's still so messed up you can't play the co-op campaign online. It's like they threw that mode in there just to taunt people.

The new Blue/White deck would be awesome if it weren't stuck with walls and those stupid denizen of the deeps. The denizen card is probably the worst choice for this deck - it's expensive, there's multiples so you could never play more than one at a time, and since they return your other creatures you control to your hand they are a shitty option if you plan on controlling other players creatures.

It wouldn't be so frustrating if they weren't stuck in the core deck :(

Tezzeret's deck is fun, but becomes a totally snoozefest against the computer. After awhile it takes the computer easily a minute per turn to decide what to do, even if it's going to do nothing.

Bottle Gnomes in the original Blue deck is an unlock? wtf lol.

Not putting in online-co-op is the nail in the coffin for me, though. I've run into too many instances of friends teaming up in free for all matches, and 1v1 is almost always decided by luck and deck selection.

Ahh well, it was all worth the money though :p Wake me up when the next expansion comes out.

I give up... how do you beat the last puzzle challenge on the expansion (Liliana)? Do you kill her or make her draw out? Either way I can't complete the puzzle.

It says YOU CAN WIN THE GAME JUST NOT ON THIS TURN.

How does this play in comparison to the old Microprose MTG PC game?

Also, is there a single player mode to this?

Yes.

And it plays the table-top card game. Dunno about Microprose.

And I stopped playing this because a) I'm tired of my 360 (I'm pretty much moving into the PS3 territory for games/multiplatforms now) and b) the unlocking one card per win was starting to grind on me.

I do want to get back into it but the damn 16 wins x 6-7 decks is just... ugh.

yes theres single player mode including the aweosme chalenges like Inquest used to have. The expansion just has 3 of them which is a disapointment to me

Reading this thread was awesome :lol

I'm currently stuck in another country working so to keep myself occupied since I now have no social life I play Magic on Magic Work Station for free. Having sunk $1500 into the game over the past couple of years its nice to get some value out of my collection here.

This game sounds as if it was designed perfectly for its intended aim: attract new players to the game. Wizards of the Coast has been focusing on their "Acquisition" strategy for about 2 years now.

I would recommend if you really enjoyed this game and want to try the physical game that you try the Duel Decks products they've been pushing. Its essentially the game in a box, contains two decks that vs. each other, and you can play with a friend/girlfriend and there's no need to spend additional money to customize the deck unless you want to, and then you can agree on an easy rule like "one booster a month" or whatever.

The great thing about the physical game is exactly that, the feel and touch of the cards adds sooo much to the game, you wouldn't believe :lol

The Duel Decks are I believe Elves vs. Goblins, Jace vs. Chandra (aka Red vs Blue), Divine vs. Demonic and the just-released Garruk vs. Lilliana (aka Green vs Black).

i was playing co-op over a friends house last week (NEED CO-OP ONLINE PLEASE) and apparently they patched the game so that two people cant use the same deck?

of course we wanted to go all Elf on the AI and break the game and polish off these last few co-op missions, but it wont let you. the same goes for online 2 headed giant im assuming?

i still havent picked up the expansion, but i think i will this week. (friend has it alread and i have the game updated so i could play with folks who have it allready)

the way co-op has been handled is definitly dissapointing though.

I finally unlocked all the cards for all the decks including the DLC.

I still need to do the stupid coop campaigns. It's so lame you can't do them online.

You and me both :lol but I had CC since it's out though. The rest I bought the first day it was Dotw.

I'm a long time Magic player (started with 3rd edition back in '94) but didn't play for years and had to catch up with the new abilities and whatnot. There was something I definitely didn't understand on my last game.

I had a troll ascetic
troll_ascetic.jpg

And my opponent had a Deft duelist
deft_duelist.jpg

and a Goldenglow Moth
6.jpg

I attacked with my troll and he defended with both creatures. I regen my troll since it would die. I would have thought that I would at least be able to kill his moth but I didn't.

My questions are;

- Is it because of the Duelists first strike? So if one creature with first strike defends with another creature, that other creature benefits from it?

Or;

- Is it because of the Duelists shroud that triggered because of my regen?

Thanks for teh answur :D

It's because of the first strike. He took out your troll before it could do any damage to anything but he was smart and set the moth to block to get the extra life.

The Duelist attacks first and kills your troll before it is able to do any damage. After the attack phase is over, your troll is then revived.

Moth and Duelist block. Since Moth is blocking, the ability is triggered and he gains 4 health.
First strike damage from the duelist goes on the stack, it resolves, and your troll dies. Troll regenerates, and is removed from combat. Then normal damage goes through, the moth does nothing(0 attack, and no enemy anyway), and the troll does nothing, since its not in combat anymore.

EDIT: So beaten

Yeah, like wow, who would have thunk that deals = sales.

I love this game, BTW. Exactly the right amount of M:TG for me.

Will probably buy, but I didn't even bother to unlock everything from the first expansion. No deck editor and only 3 new cards per make this a tough sell. They also need to speed up some of the parts of the game - particularly when several things are resolving like multiple howling mines. They should just make everything resolve at the same time rather than one by one.

I'll probably pick this up as well, if I can pry myself away from Defense Grid :p It's a good way to get my fix without having to buy cards. Too bad they won't let you create your own decks... Have they gone into any of the reasons why they decided against it?

Because this is supposed to be the gateway drug for the real thing. Letting people manipulate their decks would probably end up with nubs getting thoroughly destroyed by players who can make a competent deck. I like my decks to be as close to 60 as possible, but the default decks are so bad that you're forced to play 70-80 card decks just to get some good cards in the mix. Not being able to select the amount of mana in a deck tends to make things a bit miserable too.

But for $5 it is a great value; it's the core of the game that needs work.

Great, I bought the expansion. Now the game is broken. It just loads to a black screen. Will probably have to wait months for a patch to fix it.

I should have read up on it before buying. Oh well.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. Well shit, guess I'll have to play SSFIV tonight instead of unlocking some new cards :(

This has got to be the buggiest game I've ever played. Some of the glitches in game can be hilarious but I can't believe how many of them there are.

Just beat the campaign. Really fun. Another nice expansion.

My achievement problem is that even though it says now that I have only one achievement missing (one of the new ones) in the icons, in the list and points it says "16/18." Pretty wonky; probably have to check out the official forums but I remember this or something similar not having a fix.

So, did you get any of the avatar awards? I'm curious what they are.

so is this game still worth it? Still a lot of people playing that wont destroy a newbie like myself.

I used to play magic in middle school like 1998. Not very hardcore, just with some friends.

How many expansions are there and are they worth it?
Still a good amount of people playing?

I didn't buy this at first because of the no editing deck thing, but I kinda wanna play now anyways. Is it still fun?

They also got these "Full Decks" in the marketplace, are those totally new decks with new cards or is it the old bait and switch? (they are in the game already, but you can buy them if your too lazy to unlock them yourself)

What is the recommended things to buy to get the full experience and not be at a disadvantage?

Full Game
Expansion 1
Expandion 2
??

Elf deck will still destroy, but other than that... the game is fine. It's Magic on consoles and made for casual play.

For $10 you can't do worse.

(Though yeah: The deck editor not being there is the HUGEST issue I have with the game)

Anyone beat the last challenge in the new expansion?

The other ones weren't too hard, and had some interesting concepts, but I just can't figure out the final one. I think I know the general idea
(on own turn, damage plus play the creature that untaps your cards on their turn, then damage again on their turn)
, and might just need to work out the order of the plays.

Picked this up last night and played a few games. Pretty fun. Find it a little hard to believe they gave the elf deck another magistrate, but the other two unlockables are not very good. Can't wait to see what everyone else got. I still love this game. Noticed a few new sound effects too.

Yes, Planeswalker t-shirt which actually looks pretty nice and fairly subtle. And then a Magic deck for your dude that he plays around with, bit goofy but cute.

I think those Full Decks are just unlocks for the ones who don't want to spend time to unlock it.
