If you specifically want to be tournament competitive, then you aren't going to be buying lots of random cards, you'll be designing specific decks and placing orders for individual cards. If you want to flesh out your collection you could buy a box of uncommons or commons (or a bunch of random cards, including rares, from various old sets) but I'd recommend asking at your local store when they run Draft and Sealed events, and use the cards you collect from that. That way is much more fun.
Cool thanks for the input! Im thinking im ganna do both, buying a collection off ebay or something and going to a draft event. IM SO LTTP.

I don't normally tread into this thread, but I've been playing MTG:DotP'12 on Steam.

Someone I was playing against said "Top Deck" which I think is the term for getting the right card at the right time and saving my ass. Then right before the end of the game they said "Small Play", but I have no idea what that means. So...y'know, what does Small Play mean? Were they talking smack on me or giving me a compliment? :lol

I normally don't hop into this thread either :)

There is a DotP thread too. It's not as active, but we do answer questions and try to help out when new players jump in.

I am now converted :)

Bought my first Magic cards ever on Friday!!!! Bought the booster battle pack and been teaching myself how to play. Now I want to add more cards! Since I'm not going to be tournament competitive do you guys recommend 1000 card magic lots? If so do you guys know any good places that sell them evenly distributed or had a good experience with a certain seller? They are ganna be split between me and some buddies (if I can convince them to play lol). Been deciding between that or the deck toolkit.

Hopefully I can get some answers. This thread haa been great!
Unless you can confirm that there are no more than 4 of a single card in that lot, I would suggest against it. You're better off buying one of the beginner's kits.

Edit: Did anyone do Game Day? I frigging LOVE that Elite Inquisitor artwork. Shame it wasn't a more viable card (mentor), but it's no biggie.

The Deckbuilder's Toolkit is fantastic. If you are a beginner, or even if you want to build a solid 60 card draft deck with friends, it's awesome.

I got one :D And I'm actually using Inquisitor over Mentor in my G/W Human deck. Mostly because if theres a single lord on the field, mentors ability is worthless and becomes a Bear for 2W. Sure inquisitor's pro stuff isn't anything to write home about right now, but still 2/2 first strike and vigilance for WW. Was a pretty good threat at Game day.

I went 3-2 but that was only good enough for 9th so I didn't get the foil promo :(
Had fun though, getting better with my U/R CounterBurn deck and have some ideas on improving it.

I went 5-0 and the top 4 decided to split the cash and boosters. (I prob pulled the worst out of the 4....Devils Play and some 25 cent rare) Only 24 people showed up. :(

Went 3-1. Only 13 at the store. Tied for 3rd place, won 4 boosters, best pulls were a Moorlaund Haunt and Clifftop Retreat - not horrible.

I find Abolisher gets more play at the 2-spot. Its ability is just that much more annoying and allows you to set up on your turn without worry. Inquisitor is still a good card for a casual deck, though. I sort of want to make a mono white humans and mono black vampires deck for kicks; something on the level of the event decks, nothing too crazy. Maybe 1 mythic in each.

This is the art featured on the Inquisitor promo. Looks fantastic scaled down and foily.

Goddamn I threw together a Sharuum the hegemon EDH deck just to have something different and turns out it's fucking brutal. Sucks in multiplayer but its win record in 1v1 is absurd.

ohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygoshohmygosh.

So I've always been kinda closet-obsessed with Starter 1999. It was the first pack of magic I opened (I was like... eight when I bought my first pack) and I loved the art so much I came back to the store the next day asking if they had any "Magic the gathering, deckmaster expansion" because I thought the little "deckmaster" on the back was what set it was from. The people had no fucking idea what I was talking about, so they just said they didn't have any, and I never got to open another pack; by the time I went back again, I think the set's short print run was over, and that was that :( I bought a few packs of urza block, but I REALLY wanted more starter 1999. I traded for a bit, but it was so rare (and at the time, considered so crappy) that it was in almost no binders.

So the other week I found half a box of it at my LGS, $18 a pack and 2 for 35. I know the owner pretty well (Slapshot sports in saugus is the greatest shop ever), so he got me a pack for $15. I felt like I had purchased $15 in pointless nostalgia, but no.

Grim Tutor.

I thought it was only worth $60, and holy fuck was I wrong. I don't even know what to do with this card! So freakin' happy. This is the most expensive card I've ever pulled, by far. Time to go attempt to convince myself to sell this thing so I can have $150 to spend on groceries for the next month.

I run both in the deck actually. Only 2 inquisitors (its good, but not that good) and 3 Abolishers at the 2 spot as well. Done well for me so far.

That's awesome! Cost of the pack x10, at least, maybe more since yours will look and even smell pack-fresh. Good stuff.

We all know he's going to spend that $150 on more Starter packs.

:D

Yeah, Sharuum is nasty. That was the first EDH deck I put together and I will only play it in 4+ multi, otherwise my friends get pissed and don't want to play. So much crazy shit in mine and so many cruel ways to win.

Really liking my Ghave deck as well. Got some crazy stuff going on in there, but still don't have it fast enough. If I don't get a few really good turns, I'm probably out.

I love spamming Scourglass, it makes everyone rage the fuck out.
Or cheating out a magister sphinx turn 4. Or my favorite, abusing Filigree Angel to put my life at a ridiculous level. Venser and Esperzoa let you no so many mean things.

h....i.....muh....

I'm going to admit it was one of the first things I considered, until I realized the odds of there being another tutor in there were pretty slim. :P

Time to build my next EDH deck though! :D I'm thinking either Norin the Wary dragonstorm/artifacts or Thada Adel goodstuff. I duno, I'm looking for a deck that won't end most games by comboing off of Defense of the Heart....

3x Ezuri, Renegade Leader
3x Devil's Play
3x Rootbound Crag
3x Copperhorn Scout

If I can get those cards to complete my current standard deck, this will be the first deck I've built since Scars came out that I haven't had to put money into.

Feels good, man. ^_^

So does he mull until he gets a mind shrieker?

It looks super fragile.

Halycon said:

Pretty much, mull till you get a shrieker, hope you can get it out on turn 1/2/3 and have a sick turn 1 with your chancellors, and hope you get some good cards with its activated. It's very luck-based, but fun when it works out all right. Plus if you run with unburial rites, manage to get djinns out, or you get your quicksilver amulet, you can start cranking out those heavy cards pretty quickly.

You're right that it's pretty shaky though :D

So...with the cards I'm seeing in the latest block I'm considering making a mulling deck. However...how do you fight against something like Kozilek? He seems to completely counter a mulling deck unless you can remove him from the game somehow.

I've been playing with a few decks lately. Mono-green Eldrazi deck with Coat of Arms, Eldrazi Monument, and Cryptic Gateway is beast in multiplayer. Getting a 15/15, flying, protection from colored spells, annihilator 6 on turn 4 is hilarious.

Inquisition of Kozilek?

It should be rotated out with Zendikar if you're playing against a standard deck.

If you make them draw multiple cards don't they deck out before the "shuffle thing back into your library" trigger resolves?

Edit: Oh yeah, it's entire graveyard, not just him. Nevermind.

Girlfriend is discovering right now the joys of putting together a deck.
I got the carnival of blood starter deck and she is building it from here with whatever I got here.
She's talking about buying specific cards. I'll never have money again.
-
This is what I am proposing for her vampire deck based on carnival of blood.
Budget sugestions? The idea is to simply start putting vampires on the table and never stopping until someone is dead.

4 Bloodcrazed Neonate
4 Child of Night
4 Rakish Heir
4 Markov Patrician
2 Falkenrath Noble
1 Falkenrath Marauders
2 Sengir Vampire
1 Gruesome Deformity
1 Curse of Stalked Prey
2 Vampiric Fury
1 Night Terrors
1 Traitorous Blood
1 Diabolic Tutor
12 Mountain
12 Swamp
4 Volt Charge
1 Sangromancer
3 Blood Seeker

*list*
Additions to consider:

Brimstone Volley - many of your creatures will die, so getting to throw 5 damage at your opponent's face for 3 is great

Bloodline Keeper - not exactly budget, but not too expensive; just a cool card in general with awesome flip ability

Crossway Vampire - lets your Heirs/Neonates/Marauder get through

Tribute to Hunger - very thematic, can deal with pesky Hexproof creatures
Victim of Night or Doom Blade- good removal

Curse of Stalked Prey - cheap rare, really works well with your deck, having 4 wouldn't be bad

Olivia Voldaren - "cheap" mythic, one of her in here would be great

Consider removing:

Volt Charge - realistically, it'll be hard for your guys to get through consistently, meaning you will rarely benefit from Proliferate; leave in if adding Crossway Vampires

Blood Seeker - crappy if your opponent isn't really playing creatures, not so hot even if he does

Markov Patrician - Kind of crappy, really easy to deal with for your opponent; more value out of Crossway and Heir

Night Terrors - a bit pointless as a singleton, and the deck otherwise has no hand control elements

Traitorous Blood - it's fun to steal peoples' favorite pets, but this is only good if you can end the game immediately after casting this and attacking; not awful to leave in here as a surprise, but since you built the deck you'll know to expect it

Basically, find the primary focus of the deck and add cards that support it. Have fun!

Sblargh: Volt Charge is where you learn the difference between synergy and "win-more." It's not a bad card by any means, but not necessarily needed for that deck.

Traitorous Blood is a sideboard card.

Do add Doom Blade as your main kill spell, with Go for the Throat in your sideboard against other Vampire decks.

Does anyone know how the swiss format scoring system works at a regular FNM? I'm gonna do an in-house draft next week and I'm trying to figure it out. I'm thinking of doing 5 rounds, and then a tie breaking round if necessary.

Winners who won 2-0 rounds gets 3 pts.
Winners who won 2-1 rounds gets 2 pts.
Draws will award each player 1 pt (though I don't see us calling time in an in-house draft!)
Losers gets 0 pts.

First round pairings will be random, and then the following rounds will pair similar pts.

I would like to try to follow the official swiss scoring system as closely as possible. Do certain rounds or consecutive wins nets you more pts? For instance, I know a player who wins 4 rounds in a row and then loses the last game will place higher than a player who loses the first game, but wins 4 in a row even tho in the end they have the same record. It's just, how does the system work?!

Thanks for the suggestion, guys. I might build this deck for me, lol.
FNM today was kind of a disaster in terms of results, but I feel deck is starting to work.
I went 0-2, 0-2, 0-2. 2-0; but a lot of those losses I could have won with just a bit more luck, other I made a bad decision somewhere; one of those 0-2 were just the deck actively working against me; tho I will have to put up and buy those bicolor terrains one day; I lost at least 3 matches due to having lots of islands with black spells on hand or lots of swamps with blue spells on hand.

I'm breaking the rules of my all zombie creature deck by including two Grave Titans, they are just so good!

Thematically, I'll be thinking of the Grave Titan as the necromancer that leads the zombie army, so I think I can deal with the break in theme.

Went 2-3 at FNM last night. I ran my G/W Humans because I didn't have enough playtesting with my mono-black infect deck.

...But I should've ran it. My losses were pretty quick so in the remaining time before the next round I played a couple matches against the people I lost to, but trying out my infect deck - Didn't lose a single match with that deck. It's nasty. They're on such a fast clock and if they don't have anything to stop it, its GG real quick.

It's 3 pts per win regardless of 2-0 or 2-1. 1 point for a draw. Consecutive wins don't mean anything, it's your opponents win percentage that is used for tie-breakers.

So I really want a playset of Snapcaster Mages for my U/R deck but I don't have sick luck opening prize boosters. How much do you guys spend on singles? I could drop £100 to finish this deck but obviously I'd rather not.
Best place for singles in the UK?

I just dropped $40 on a set of Hero of Bladehold alone. Oh god, I don't even wanna think about how much I've spent on singles.

Out of curiosity, are we... allowed to trade with each other on here? I'd love to set up some trades with gaffers, being that nearly everyone on MTGS is an absolute dick who insists I use around $5 worth of packaging to be worthy of trading with, then proceeds to mail damaged cards in taped penny sleeves in a plain envelope. Sigh.

LMK if anyone here wants to trade with or buy from a pathetically dedicated collector. I love old cards, and have a ton of newer stuff.

actually, I think I'm going to PM a mod and ask if it's okay to start a NeoGAF TCG trading/buying/selling thread, as those usually go well in communities this tight-knit....

edit:

Also just finished up a trade and am insanely happy with the outcome! Finished my playsets of Misty Rainforests and Scalding Tarns, HELL YES! ^.^

If only I had cards worth trading! A buddy of mines bought a booster box and pulled a Garruk, a Geist of Saint Traft, and plenty of other $10 cards. Last box I bought, I didn't even get one card worth more than $8. ;[

Where's the GP going to be at?

I broke. Ended up buying the singles I needed to finish my Standard Elf deck.

Kessig Elf Burn

Mainboard
4x Copperhorn Scout
1x Elder of Laurels
4x Elvish Archdruid
3x Ezuri, Renegade Leader
4x Gladecover Scout
4x Llanowar Elves
4x Incinerate

3x Lead the Stampede
3x Devil's Play
1x Red Sun's Zenith
1x Skinshifter
3x Viridian Corrupter
4x Viridian Emissary

4x Rootbound Crag
3x Kessig Wolf Run
9x Forest
5x Mountain

Maybeboard
Untamed Might
Arc Trail
Mental Misstep
Untamed Might
Mutagenic Growth
Genesis Wave

I'm considering Genesis Wave for mainboard and switching Incinerate for Arc Trail.

W/U aggro has been doing well in tournaments. Running Geist with Angelic Destiny seems to be the go-to combo. I'm poor so I go with Spirit Mantle instead lol.

You can always donate to me! I only have one and can use more. :3

I've had enough. I've been buying pack after pack all month of New Phyrexia for one card: Beast Within. It's like it's a freaking mythic uncommon or something. I'm having no trouble pulling Praetor's Grasp or Life's Finale in three out of every five packs, but God forbid I get one freaking Beast Within. I've seen more Mental Missteps than I can shake a stick at (shame it's mostly worthless now).

I'm buying them loose. I'm not buying another pack of NP for the rest of my life.

On a side note, Shrine of Loyal Legions is incredible in my token deck. I have a new-found appreciation for that card.

Dude, you can buy a Beast Within for like three bucks.

I know that, but I enjoy buying packs. Plus there's other good stuff in the set. I figured I'd pull one or two since it's an uncommon. Nope.
