Primal Surge screams EDH to me (and type 4 of course). With gauntlet of power/caged sun you can easily bust it out turn 6 or even earlier and then flood the board with creatures. Another great fit for azusa.

If you have Living Lands or something like that, would you have to play that before putting Infinite Reflection on something nasty to get a small horde, or would it not matter?

Oh shit, confirmed:

They also basically confirm that Mana Leak won't be coming back in 2013

I read somewhere that Dark Ritual isn't around anymore. Is this true?

If so, why? :-(

Also, what's with the messed up borders on some of these cards? Like this one:

Those are "timeshifted" cards from the set Future Sight. They are cards that Wizards was hinting at as being printed in future sets or previewing future set mechanics/cards etc.

The Time Spiral block had a past, present, and future theme for each of its three sets.

Past: Time Spiral had a "timeshifted" sub-rarity that included a few cards in each booster, replacing commons. These were all reprints of older cards, and used the classic card frame.

(Alternate) Present: Planar Chaos had cards with "experimental" abilities for each color, like White having counterspells or Red having Giant Growth. These had a modified version of the current card frame.

Future: Future Sight had cards representing what future sets might bring for each color and Magic in general, using the futuristic card frame like the one in your post. Some of these were actually pre-prints, meaning they would be printed in the "proper" set months or years later.

It was just how they designed that set.

Well, specifically "future-shifted" cards like that are cards they said might later appear in future sets.

Despite that, I doubt Tarmogoyf will ever get reprinted in a standard set. In a commander pack or something maybe, but yah

I actually just got gifted 8 dark rituals from 8 different sets (to add to my Portuguese black border 3rd edition ones). You can never have too many dark rituals.

Cornerstone of too many Turn 1 kills. They try to avoid printing cards that enable a victory on turn 1 2 or 3.

I'm getting mixed signals. Is the card banned or not? Or just not in the current print series?

Legal in older formats, but hasn't been reprinted for a while.

its not on the reserved list though, so while it is unlikely we'll see much of it again, its not impossible.

then again, time walk was on the reserved list lol.

Maybe there will be a black miracle that adds mana.

Another old man question:
I know that you can't have two of the same Planeswalker out, but if two cards are referring to the same Planeswalker, what are the rules? I.e. Liliana Vess and Liliana of the Veil.

They can't have the same sub-type (right term?). Youll notice both cards have - Planeswalker — Liliana on them, so they cant both be in play at the same time.

Right, it's like the legendary rule. You can have multiples of cards with the subtype Planeswalker - Liliana, but only one such card on the field at any given time. If another Planeswalker - Liliana enters the battlefield on either side, the new one and the one already there both go to the graveyard.

And they admit that Snapcaster is a mistake! Impressive how often R&D has made mistakes lately. Or maybe they have been more honest about what is a mistake.
But Compulsive Research and Remand wouldn't be printed today? I they were both on my UG Snakes deck back in Kamigawa/Ravnica. :(

Yeah, they also hinted yet again that the Titans won't be coming back. I did find this interesting:
That argument makes sense on the surface, because it's true: we make creatures a lot better than we used to. But the reality (beyond the fact that you can prove mathematically that creatures were too weak for most of Magic's history, based on the number of turns it takes to resolve an average "goldfish" game state) is simply that spells are much more inherently powerful than creatures. Spells have haste, whereas creatures have "Suspend 1." Spells can only be interacted with for the moment they are on the stack, whereas creatures can be interacted with at sorcery speed. So you have to work a lot harder to make creatures relevant than you have to work to make spells relevant.

I like how they have a paragraph in there that is essentially just "we understand that Cavern of Souls + Titans = totally fucked".

I'm still surprised they didn't have this land at least hit you for a life or something when you use it for colored mana. Or at least have some sort of downside.

Well the biggest mistake in that was printing Titans in the first place.

Maybe we'll also get a "counter target 6/6 creature with converted mana cost 6 even if its uncounterable" spell, just in case.

They can make an "Exile target spell with converted mana cost 6" for U.
or phyrexian U

The downside is already there when you can only play a very limited card numbers with the coloured mana it gives. Also remember mutavault? That land was nasty and broken.

The Cavern of Souls article has annoyed me. It sounds like they wanted a card to make tribal mana bases better in standard (a good idea) and one to make Snapcaster + Mana Leak worse. I personally think Snapcaster is a very powerful card that is also fun to play because it is very versatile and gives a lot of options. Some people don't like counters, but I'd rather have them than a race to get a Titan out with no interaction. Discard isn't a very consistent mechanic so I hope the hint at a Titan hate card isn't Appetite for Brains.
So they wanted to do two quite desirable things and decided to put them together in the same ridiculous land. Great.

I'm going to be buying 2 playlets of Cavern of Souls, but I agree with you. Something odd is going on in R&D these days. First the Titans, the quick banned cards and now this article that basically says "Well, we really don't know what we're doing ATM. Bear with us. Until we figure this thing out, we're going to give you a card that totally strengthens the things people dislike the most right now."
