That... that is a fucking weird-ass card.
Loveable? Nah. They suck and this does tooFlip cards are already awkward, but also loveable, this is outright hideous. They are accelerating too quickly with alternate frames, SOI just had Meld cards and now this monstrosity.
some reddit person or something said:That's because graveyard is usually to the right of the player. You're supposed to stack them under one another so just the bottom half is visible.
Oh god no. Think Twice was a mistake. Don't repeat it.They would make a lot of people happy by printing a decent counterspell that draws some cards from the graveyard.
I have a Mana Leak and a Think Twice in hand. How is Think Twice a mistake?
we've had flashback cards that have replacement effects of the original if cast with flashback you'd think they'd just do that.
Assuming it's real.
It's one of those things where you are supposed to just know what it does but make it look different than other split cards. So like, I think the mechanic is a great idea. A spell that turns into a different one in the graveyard opens a ton of design space, it plays in several interesting ways, and it's incredibly flavorful for the Egyptian setting.
At the same time, it's really hard not to look squinty-eyed at that frame design. The asymmetry is just so... glaring. It does the job and communicates how the card works really well, but it's just super goofy. Having thematically linked names and illustrations like this be different sizes just seems super jarring.
All that said, I'm not sure there's a better execution. Let me poke at it.
EDIT: Actually the obvious execution here is a DFC with a special back frame, though with both sides having a mana cost it'd be really hard to visually establish which was the front side.
EDIT2:
That would make sense, actually.
. . . . . . . . . . . . .

If you play a spell in your main phase, I leak.
If you pass, I Think Twice and get to replay this game next turn.
There's no real opportunity cost with the card.

The funny thing about escalate is it's really just multikicker with an upper limit.Only with a very simple variant of the original effect (i.e. doubling it.) Doing it with completely different effects is a lot less sticky, and also they wouldn't do a set where there's Flashback but it all has completely different spell effects for the same reason they wouldn't do a set with Kicker but all the cards let you pick extra modes if you kick them.
Flashback counterspells?okay but: what if the top part is the card draw and the bottom part is a counterspell
The real difference is that you're casting a spell with a different name from the graveyard otherwise you could have the same functionality with flashback. I do feel this could have been handled much more elegantly.
Flashback counterspells?
What crack are you smoking!

I think the ideal solution would have probably been flip cards for this. They would have needed to adjust the rules for it though since flip cards have the same only right side up counts outside the battlefield.I'm open to the idea that there's a more elegant solution, but I am confident that Flashback that doesn't actually do what flashbak does is not it.
They're not. Sphinx's Revelation is great. You actually have to invest resources and time into it! Cheap cycling cantrips which let you play draw-go turn after turn are not.Welcome to a control deck? Do you also complain about Glimmer of Genius?
Think Twice and Whispers of the Muse are great cards.
No, it means the split cards are grouped.Isn't the collector number of the card too high for it to be real? Unless something funky is going on.
More copies of the same card in other packs, if anyone was still on the fence about it:
These are designed so you can't use the Expertise cycle on them right?
I bought 3 packs while I was at draft tonight to console myself for getting wrecked (although someone passed me a Scalding Tarn).
Pack 1: Arid Mesa
Pack 2: Verdant Catacomb, Verdant Catacomb (foil)
Pack 3: Scalding Tarn
Making them into split-style cards also means you can technically make them different types, e.g. Instant the first time and Sorcery the second. They never have done that with split cards before though perhaps the different in orientation is to allow them to better differentiate the two halves and how they operate completely differently.
oooohhh I really like this. With being sideways you can make permanents after instants and such.

I don't understand that new frame. It looks terrible. Why isn't it just a DFC with the graveyard card on the backside?
Winnings! 3-0! Wife is gonna open them.
