Magic: the Gathering |OT9| Kaladesh - Cruisin' Down the Street in my 6/4

It amazes me that WotC has had access to genuinely good writers with their Dungeons & Dragons novel line (people like Richard Lee Byers, R.A. Salvatore and Paul S. Kemp, just off the top of my head), and MaRo and crew are handing their "big-focus storyline push" off to FanFiction.net rejects.

They can't say they can't afford the authors, Magic makes way more money than D&D and has way more mindshare. Moreover, those aforementioned Forgotten Realms authors knew exactly how to build up marketable characters who can be instantly recognized by fans. Just commission these guys to write bite-sized stuff outside of an established plot blueprint.

Gaaaaah WotC why why why

They USED to care about quality in the story writing. The Brother's War is an honestly good book. Ice Age is honestly a good series of novels. Compared to our story these days the whole Weatherlight saga is a masterpiece. The only thing is that the story never mattered to people, so eventually they just stopped everything but the world building aspect of it. There's a reason they stopped doing the books. We might eventually get back to story mattering enough that we have good writing and authors, but until then there really isn't any reason for wizards to throw money at it.

Personally, I think they're heading in the right direction.

I wish they'd just use the opportunity to print new versions of cards we already had. I wouldn't mind if they just reprinted the 3-CMC Nissa here. I mean it's not exciting, but it could help bring prices down and keep them from burning through all their creative space quickly.

The Duel Deck has Nissa in it already.

Creative space for Planeswalkers is really huge given that most Planeswalkers abilities are just riffs and combinations of existing ones. They haven't even gotten into anything particularly unusual with Planeswalker design and they've been around for what, 8 years?

Really? Didn't Melira have to specifically inoculate Koth and Elspeth or am I misremembering things?
I didn't actually follow the story during Scars Block, but I do know a big plot point is that the Planeswalker Spark prevents (and even reverses) Phyrexianization. That's why Venser gave up his spark to save Karn, who had already been corrupted.

How did Karn get corrupted in the first place?

But Karn was already a Planeswalker.

But Karn was already a Planeswalker.

I believe he had to sacrifice his spark to close a rift in Time Spiral. The oil was always in his heart/core, so when the spark was removed it started doing stuff. I think he could still planeswalk because he has weatherlight parts in him, he just lost the spark.

Look at the art. I would throw both of them in the trash immediately.

Starter Chandra's illustration is kind of awful, which is pretty surprising to me coming from Jason Rainville, typically a very good artist and even one who's done a previous, better Chandra.

Chandra preordering for $50+, yeah I don't know about that.

The people who set these preorder prices by paying them haven't really adjusted to the reality of how large set mythics are are actually priced.

Moreover, those aforementioned Forgotten Realms authors knew exactly how to build up marketable characters who can be instantly recognized by fans.

It seems like pretty selective memory to me to suggest that people weren't having exactly this kind of discussion bitching about how Drizzt was a munchkin cliche twenty years ago. The exception I'd grant is Weis and Hickman, but they were a really unique case of being able to write a complex novelistic plotline to begin with (even at the expense of the actual gameplay.)

I wish they'd just use the opportunity to print new versions of cards we already had. I wouldn't mind if they just reprinted the 3-CMC Nissa here.

They've talked about the possibility of reprinting PWs in expansions now that Core Sets are gone but we haven't actually seen it yet. It seems to me like it'd be tough to actually pull off given that PWs are such a huge part of marketing the sets now.

Creative space for Planeswalkers is really huge given that most Planeswalkers abilities are just riffs and combinations of existing ones. They haven't even gotten into anything particularly unusual with Planeswalker design and they've been around for what, 8 years?

Yeah, there's a whole bunch of stuff they've explored either just slightly or not at all: static abilities, triggered abilities, additional costs, planeswalkers with X in their mana cost, etc. etc.

You did not just compare Drizzt to Jace especially not by the time the Drizzt was already 8 years old. There were 10 books about him by then.

Karn is just the best

My favorite PW ever

He embodies everything about Weatherlight lore to me

If he died in Scars I would have quit the game forever

Just comparing the reactions. Some of y'all aren't old as dirt like me and don't have a clear recollection of just how popular Drizzt-bashing and whining about people who enjoyed the Icewind Dale novels was lo those 20+ years ago.

It's not like that ever stopped, haven't been on the candlekeep forum for some time but most of the time was either spent with tumbl level discussions about Farideh and her struggles between the love for her steamy semi devil and fallen cleric boy and how Artemis isn't fucking way better than Drizzt. Fuck Entreri.

That reminds Hero is about to come out wonder if I should order a signed copy again.

Yeah it's a shame Urza couldn't have been around to get his own card, but there's always Commander products.

This is exactly true for me. I don't care about the story at all. I love Magic art, the world building and feel, but aside from seeing neat characters/monsters/places on cards, I don't care what happens to them.

So yeah, I'm totally fine with Wizards bringing their B team of writers to Magic.

i will quit the game forever

this compulsive need to have thousand dollar mana bases has to stop

Ummmm... No, what everyone is trying to say is that the Commander sets this year are 4-color themed. We already know this. Are you saying you'll quit if they print 4-color Commanders or if they print 4-color Planeswalkers? At the very least, we are getting 4-color Commanders this year, so brace yourself.

Also, there are some of us out there who looooove a good mana base. Developing one is actually one of my favorite aspects of deck building, so I never tend to mind expensive mana bases. I get why it might bother some though.

The problem with an Urza PW card is that it would need to have a condition that said "If your opponent has more and/or shinier artifacts than you do, remove all loyalty counters from Urza" and no one wants that.

That's what I'm most curious about the 4 colour precons, how they can make them playable with the very limited reprint budget other than filling them with vivids and gates.

It'd be cool if the Commander decks has Urza as "not-green" and Yawgmoth as "not-white".

Yawgmoth, Lord of Machines - 1UBBRG
Creature - Horror
Indestructible
All other creatures have indestructible and attack each combat if able.
When Yawgmoth, Lord of Machines enters the battlefield, each player returns all creature and artifact cards from his or her graveyard to the battlefield.

four mana doesn't have to mean

WURB

or RGBU

It can be

R/G W/U mana cost

or 2RG

with UW in its text box.

They'll probably be "2 colors, splashing 2 other colors" rather than actual 4-color decks.

I'm sure the secondary commanders will use the color identity rule to "cheat" four-color commanders, but the face cards will almost certainly have four colors in the casting cost.

my philosophy is flavour trumps all, so naturally i'm against four colour commanders because they'll just be creatures with rando abilities since it's impossible to have them allign with their mana identity. needing expensive mana bases just exasperates it all.

you're already limited to 99 cards. if you have access to four colours then what's the point?

They are not going to waste their one chance at doing four colour commanders by cheating with the colour identity. At least not with the main commander of each deck.

It's like the lands. Just stop giving them plane specific names. 'Gideon, Ally of Zendikar' is pretty specific. 'Liliana of the Veil' or 'Nissa, Vital Force' are vague enough to work anywhere flavorwise.

Definitely this, but I worry that just like Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil is such a chase Mythic that she may be reserved for those limited sets.

But definitely I agree. They specifically mentioned just that when they printed Cavern of Souls. But then they don't reprint it, and we are left with an expensive card.

Until she breaks the chain veil anyway

I just don't like that a deckbase like this is at a minimum reasonable:

4 Sylvan Advocate
4 Voltaic Brawler
3 Tireless Tracker
3 Verdurous Gearhulk
4 Chandra, Torch of Defiance
3 Nissa, Vital Force
4 Harnessed Lightning/Incendiary Flow/whatever

Like, those are just randomly good cards and don't take into account that there's plenty of ways to go with it beyond that, like going for more Energy with Harnessed Lightning or that 3 drop that makes 6/6s, or Duskwatch Recruiter/Lambholt Pacifice, or even fringey crap like Mina and Denn or Arlinn Kord or something.

I guess it just bugs me a little that Nissa and Chandra are just independently powerful cards that don't require you to build around them in any way. Chandra asks that you play red and Nissa asks that you play land in your deck.

Yeah, I can see a RG aggro or midrange deck being good. You also have Kessig Prowler for curving and extra aggression, Duskwatch Recruiter and Noose Constrictor for just more good creatures. Add some red burn and you've got a stew goin.

Is there a world where oath of gideon is played just for the +1 on nissa, or is 5 mana whenever you play a land draw a card not good enough in standard ?

The emblem is extremely good in any kind of game where you want to draw cards e.g. it is always good. I do not think Oath of Gideon is good enough though. Nissa protects herself extremely well.

That was Teferi.

In fact, the Phyrexian corruption existed as a part of Karn's creation - his 'heart' is a Phyrexian powerstone (his "spark" comes from Thran powerstones he got from Urza).

No, there were multiple planeswalkers that sacrificed their spark as part of the mending. Teferi, Karn, Jeska, Bolas used someone elses spark, etc.

But, ya, his powerstone heart always had oil because it was stolen from phyrexians. His spark is Glacian's through Urza's eyes. Tho I have read contradictory commentary about whether Urza had his own spark or not. Regardless, said spark got sac'd during the mending.

He absorbed Mirrari, which was corrupted by glistening oil.

The mirrari has not appeared since the end of Mirrodin proper. Slobad had it, and Slobad is now dead or something. The whereabouts of the Mirrari are unknown and will likely be a future plot device.
