The an26 was actually show down? I thought it was just possibly confused for the passenger airliner

Does the Ukrainian military have the capability to shoot down a passenger aircraft? The plane had to be at full altitude when it happened (35k feet, give or take). From everything I read when the violence between Ukraine and Russia broke out, their military is aging and severely handicapped/underfunded. I thought it took fairly sophisticated anti-aircraft weaponry to actually hit a plane that high, else every plane in Afghanistan would be shot down.

A BUK will shot down any plane under 20KM with relative ease. Ukraine, Russia and potentially the rebels all have BUK systems. The rebels have stated that they captured Ukrainian systems a while ago, and people are saying that BUKs have been transported across from Russia.

17:57: A spokesman for pro-Russian separatists in the Donetsk region told Russia's Rossiya TV that they were not capable of bringing down a commercial airliner flying at 10,000 metres.

17:57: "The portable air defence systems which we have, they work at a maximum of three to four thousand metres. Therefore, it is possible to say virtually before the start of the investigation that the Ukrainian armed forces destroyed this," separatist spokesman Sergey Kavtaradze says.

I'm calling bullshit on this. They are trying to cover their asses before they get wiped off the face of the Earth. And weren't they just bragging about some new(Or rather old) AA shit?

Bollocks, they were showing off something capable of doing this today.

The thing was 10 thousand meters up in the air. No one was looking at goddamn profiles before firing.

I guess in upcoming days we'll be able to determine what type of missile was used and who had access to said machinery.

The point is that he THOUGHT he'd shot down an AN-26 when in reality he'd just shot down 300 innocent travelers.

Why the hell are people posting those NSFW links? This tragedy is bad enough as it is. There's no need to glorify it by posting horrific pictures.

This sucks for all those families.

Really? Then that's very stupid of them (as in the company) if they're the only ones doing this.

Why is it glorifying it? Not showing the horrors that this kind of act causes is probably more worse, I'd have thought. As long as they aren't putting the pages directly onto Neogaf, so that we have a choice, it's fine.

Dat backpedaling. Guess gospodin Kavtaradze forgot all about the photos of Buk missile systems in separatist hands that got posted some while back.

I guess we have some Dutch posters here.

Perhaps on a more cynical note, though, the strength of of more immediate political fallout from this might be dependent on the number of European passengers on board. (i.e. if there were a lot of EU folks on board, there would be probably more home pressure on the EU to do more about the Ukrainian situation).

I'd say it's NATO more than EU, but eitherway yes, I suspect that will make a difference.

Who exactly are the rebels? Russians or Ukrainians?

Remember when Russia annexed Crimea by sending in Russian military pretending to be Ukrainians? Same thing. Russia is trying to grab the land East of the Dnieper by destabilizing the region. They are supplying "rebels" with arms and money, and even personnel.

The kind of anti-aircraft missile capable of shooting down a high altitude aircraft is beyond what most "traditional" rebels you would know from other conflicts should have access to/training to operate.

Ukraine has informed Malaysia Airlines that they lost contact with MH15 soon after 2pm GMT. This indicates that the Ukraine were tracking and managing the flight during it's trip across their airspace.

A standard military have rules of engagement and I would hope this would indicate friend or foe identification. I would suspect that a rebel movement with equipment provided to them by another nation (ahem) would likely not use such procedures..

Ukranians (and some ex-Russian military) supplied by Russians.

There is also a possibility that they simply stole BUK system in one of their raids on military bases around Donetsk. This SAM vehicle launcher family is in use from early 1980s and older versions were quite common in eastern armies (Belarus, Ukraine, Romania)

There's a new post on the page today referencing a AN-26.

Checking it now, it's gone. But I saw it there, it was the second post on the page about half an hour ago.

I don't know who maintains that site or where they get their info, or whatever. But for whatever it was worth, there was that post up until recently, dated today, talking about downing a A-26 and warning 'not to fly in our sky' etc.

How did these rebels get so well armed? They're taking down jets and airliners. That's insane and infuriating.

Separatists typically don't have access to something like a Buk missile system.

If pro-Russian separatists did indeed take this plane down, then the equipment they were using was likely provided to them by Russia.

Of course they'd say that now. Back on the 29th of June, they were proudly saying they had captured a BUK missile system.

There was an insane build up of arms during the Cold War. Commercial airliners are easy targets. No counter measures. Fly slow and sorta low. A SAM from the 70s could take one out.

AP says journalists saw BUK units near Snizhne, which is about 10 miles to the southeast of the crash site.

No clue whose BUK units they were, though.

If that's how it happened then tons of passenger airlines would've been shot down.

I'm not saying there isn't a way to distinguish them through the radar. I'm just saying it's not as easy as looking up at some random object tens of thousands of feet up in the air and saying "Oh, that's a commercial airliner" like some people ITT seem to think.

Amazing. We know jack shit about the perpetrators, yet people are starting to use this for their propaganda.

A rag-tag bunch of separatists generally don't have the technology to take out planes 30,000 feet in the air.

17.07.2014 17:50 Message from [I forget how to translate this word... it's military related, I believe it's from higher ranking people]

"Just shot down an AN-26 plane on Toreza area, crashed around the the Progress mine.

We warned them about flying in "our sky".

And here's a video confirming another "plane falling". [He says something along the lines of "birdfall" but I figure this would be clearer]

The bird fell past the territory, living sector was not hit.

Civilians Peaceful people were not hurt.

And there's also information about a second plane being shot down, looks to be a SU."
